Initialising Modem...

I have installed the software that came with the V3i but it cannot connect at the final stage.
It has installed the modem in system>device manager
but it just keeps saying Initialising Modem Please wait.
There is also a red circle with a white line shown in the top left corner of the phone (on the screen only)
Please help.
