Can I make a Verizon VX6700 work with Alltel Service?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I am with Alltel. My son recently received a Verizon VX6700 from his employer, and basically will not be using it. I'm considering buying it from him if I can be confident of making this device fully compatible with Alltel.

This would end up being used by my wife (I use a V3c and Palm TX, and like this setup), to replace a Moto E815.

I've searched and viewed some threads here that imply that it can be done, although the steps to accomplish this vary, and don't always seem to work. I would hate to buy it and end up with a brick.

So:

1. Is this possible?

2. What is the optimal way to accomplish this?

3. Will I then be able to bring it to an Alltel store, and have them legitimately activate it in their system, switching from my wife's current phone?

Thanks.

the phone would need to be unlocked to move it to alltel, and im not sure if you did get it unlocked if they would even activate it...

will g.

Thanks for the reply, Will. I've seen conflicting reports on your comment in other threads - some say a local office will activate one, while others say they won't.

You'd think that if the underlying hardware is otherwise identical, and they can flash it with all their cusomized firmware/software, that they wouldn't care, and would offer this as part of customer service. But as we all know, businesses often don't make decisions rationally, and customer service is often not high on their list.

I guess I'd just have to stop by the local Alltel office with the phone, and see what they would or wouldn't be willing to do.

Thanks again for the reply.

Yes. It is extremely possible. I am talking on my Verizon XV6700 on my Alltel service as we speak. You will have to call the 1800# to get is activated though, don't waste your time going to the store. You tell the tech you want to switch out the serial numbers and they ask you for the ESN of the new phone, and ask you to powercycle and try to call out. They set your home/roaming with a #228 config. You will have issue with it if you want the data plan. I talked to data support, they said they could tell my phone was sending a verizon username to them, but was easily changed through a phone setup the guy walked me through. The only thing that sucks is there is no picture text messaging and there is NO WAY to get around it. But other than that it is well worth it.

Thanks for the reply and info, Justin. I don't care about either the data plan or picture text messaging, so those aren't a big deal.

Verizon is rather 'famous' for disabling bluetooth and other functionality on their phones. Did the process you went through remove those restrictions? For example, I would want to be able to establish a bluetooth connection between the phone and computer, to move files around, back-up, etc. I can do this easily with my Alltel Razr V3c, while Verizon customers with their version of the V3c can't.

Any general comments on the phone itself? Do you use a bluetooth headset with it (one of the reasons I would want this phone for my wife), and if so how well does it work? Any trouble using WiFi at free hot-spots, etc.?

Thanks again.

(P.S. I mis-spoke about my wife having a Moto E815; she has a non-bluetooth Nokia. Guess I just had something else on my mind when I first posted.)

Bluetooth to the headset is flawless, phone gets excellent signal (bars will be at one or two, but voice is still clear and loud). Verizon disables the bluetooth features only if u let it. Hard - reset your phone and soft reset when it brings you to a verizon logo and tries to install the .cab files. This takes almost all the verizon crap off that they limit you with. For file transfer i use the cradle and Activesync so i couldn't tell you how that works. WiFi was causing issues for me in the beginning but i changed the WEP key on my router, and didn't have anymore problems. Public WiFi has always worked great. The Verizon V3c was a screw-up on verizon's part. They disabled a lot of the features with version 3 of their software. If you have a verizon store near, have them flash your razr phone to their version 2 software and then back to version 4. Version 4 doesn't install OBEX (file transfer software) but 2 does.

Many thanks for the reply and info, JustinY17 (and for the pm response as well).

It sounds like this will work if my wife wants to go this direction. We actually just got together with my son (who has the VX6700) yesterday, and she's not real keen on the size/weight compared to her fairly small Nokia, once she had a chance to compare them side by side. I mean it's an apples/oranges comparison in terms of features, but if she doesn't want to carry it around....

I still prefer the Palm TX/Razr V3c for my personal use, rather than a 'smartphone' of any flavor, but this looked like a reasonable option for my wife.

Oh well - at least I know it can work, and what do to to make it work, if she decides to go this route.

Thanks again for all the replies and info.

I was wondering if there's been some people who did buy a 6700 from telus and uses it on another service provider. Or any new way to change the provider "block".

Thanks
