Treo 680 Questions...

I did a few searches and couldn't find the answers to my questions, so here goes.
Bought a 680 for the wife for christmas, she already has a palm zire.
Do I uninstall the desktop software or just install the new 680 software ontop of the old one? If I uninstall the old one how do I save all the data? Back up the sync folder?
