3g / non 3g rf performance??

I have a Razr V3 and upgraded to the LG CU500. I returned the LG for the SYNC because it didn't get as good reception as the V3 (I work in a steel building in a fringe area). I don't think the SYNC is picking up as well as the V3 either. My V3 would let me send and recieve texts from areas where I can't with the LG or the Sync. My question is could this be due to the LG and Sync being 3g phones and looking for a 3g network? (3g isn't available yet where I live) If that's the case, would the SE 810 be a better choice?

I have talked to more than a couple of Cingular managers whose lives have been complicated by complaints of poor RF capture by 3G phones. The LG is worse, but they still get complaints on the Sync.

One of these managers rather openly advises his customers how to turn off 3G on the new phones.

Even if you are in an area with a good 3G rollout, your life can still be complicated in a situation where you had excellent RF signal capture with your V3 because the GSM was on the low band, and you seem to have bad RF signal capture on 3G because it's on the high band and doesn't penetrate structures as well as your low band GSM signal.

It can be made worse because the phone might occasionally think it sees a one-bar 3G high band signal and tries to latch onto it instead of hanging onto your perfectly good five-bar low band GSM signal. :/ In addition to providing poor RF signal capture in these situations, the phone will rapidly use up battery life.

If you liked your V3 and got used to it, you might want to think about returning your 3G device and just waiting for a better 3G rollout in your area.

If you liked the V3, you might also want to wait for the Cingular GSM K1. I have been using one for a while, now (the one bought from the Motorola site, true USDM and no hacking required), and it is fully as good with RF signal capture as the V3i was.

Best of luck.

I know this is a very frustrating scenario.

Thanks for the input, George - as far as disabling 3g, it makes perfect sense if you don't have 3g in your area and it causes problems. I did this on the lg and it didn't make a difference. As far as the moto - I really don't care for the ui, I like the samsung much better. Any ideas on the performance of the Sony?

The LG CU500 didn't work well for me but the Sync has been great. I just got back from CD, NYC, Charlotte NC, and Nashville, TN. 3g was great in all 3 cities. I still live in rural 2g KY. Very happy here!

I would try it. The w600i I had was as good in rf as the razr as long as the had the phone rotated open. Having the antenna at the mouth makes a big difference.
