Hi there, I originally 1 year ago had a Motorola V551 which I really liked.... but then managed to get it water damaged in the summer.

Just recently I purchased another Motorola V551 from EBay new, and its great except one thing................. it is a Cingular phone, unlocked, however it has a Cingular browser and I can't use it to download ringtones (the ringtones on this phone blow) or photos or anything.....

Is there anyway at all to fix this kinda problems...... pleeze and thank much in advance.....

If you have a USB cable, reasonably strong nerves and the ability/desire to fiddle, you can replace the firmware in the v551 (and many Motorola phones) yourself. I did mine a while back, and while the initial preparation has a fair number of steps, once you get through it there's an awful lot of cool stuff you can do to the Motorola phones.

I used the motomodders.net site to find all the info, including replacement firmware and detailed instructions. I notice the site is down for maintenance right now, but check http://www.motomodders.net/Default....pics&forumid=15 when it's back up.

Mind you, if you get the cable and Motorola Phone Tools, then you'll be able to upload ring tones that way anyway.

Brad.

Check the Rogers FAQ. All the WAP/MMS settings are there. Open the phones browser, go to settings, and input them all.

Hi I cannot open the browser because its a Cingular browser? So what else could I do... anything?

Ah I haven't seen a Cinggular V551 perhaps its different from most Motos... Even if you can't access the browser MOST motos have a browser button where you can do in, press menu, and do WAP settings. If you can't do this than yes perhaps you'll need to flash.

There may be a way for tech support to do an over the air push of the wireless data settings if you don't feel like editting the websessions file. If you do, you'll need a custom USB cable, P2K software and a copy of the file from motomodders.net. Alternatively, you can just flash the firmware with RSDLite or something similar [more difficult, imho]

true dat.

OTA., they come in a browser message....ASKING them to do this is an entirely different ballgame. Some will preach from the pulpit that they do not support non-rogers bought phones and won't do it even if they MOTHER tells them so. Other reps will OFFER it without being requested right off the bat.

Why pray-tell do you prefer to do the ringtone/wallpaper customization-perhaps the most expensive way? IE instead of taking advantage of the plethora of Motorola friendly modding & customizing software that's readily available on the internet? all at a EU cost of $ZIP.

Wirelessly posted (SAMSUNG-SGH-I607/I607FG1 Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 4.01; Windows CE; Smartphone; 320x240) UP.Link/6.3.0.0.0)

There should be a way to add either a websession for your current service provider. I would install Opera mini either through the data cable or a download(after you configure web sessions of course)

It's been a known problem that even though you have the settings for your specific carrier, you will not be able to download ringtones or wallpapers. I do not know if this is the same case with Rogers but... I would go with bpsmicro's suggestion and get a USB cord and get what you want for free instead of paying.

some of the v551's have the websession menu disabled in the seem
