Esmertec Java wonky??

I have this wierd problem with the java application on the T-Mobile (HTC) Dash Excalibur.

Some jad/jar applications use the left right options, and I assume these are supposed to be mapped to the left/right soft keys above the home and back buttons, the problem is, almost every application that uses these keys doesn't work on the left option.

I've posted this screenshot to illustrate:

Opera Mini browser, widsets, and lots of other java apps don't recognize the left soft key above the home key. The key works, as I use it in IE, and every other application.

Is this a known bug/issue, or am I just a blithering idiot about how to use it?

Help is appreciated..

Argh..

Looks like Opera Mini uses the "q" key for left key.
Another app uses a

Widsets is just plain borked.

I can't believe this is such a big issue.. Why is Java so cool again?

I found this to help:
Keytester: http://www.deftit.com/keytester.jad
(via: http://www.widsets.com/forum/posts/list/278.page)

It will show you the code of the key you pressed. Not particularly helpful in anything but diagnosing the problems.

The Dash doesn't even register the left soft key at all. ...

It seems this is a larger issue than I thought.

Apparently the Esmertec Java VM doesn't see the left soft key, and several other java applications don't map as well. I honestly am not sure if it's Esmertec's issue, HTC, or T-Mobile.. All I know is I want this fixed.

This issue is far worse than that, as per the opera forums thread you linked to, the esmertec jvm seems to allow opera hifi to run only ONCE, after which it hangs on all subsequent starts. Very frustrating.

I read about folks installing other JVM software, but for the life of me I can't find anything like that. I looked on IBM's site, and didn't find anything for ARM, mabey it has to be custom compiled or something. Sun's site didn't have anything for architecture specific processors either.

Try a search on Blackjack and Java (both keywords). That should give you a link on installing another JVM. I haven't seen one specific to the Dash, however.

The issue on the Blackjack is an inability to use most applications that access the network. (It's unreal to me that Cingular would do that---but that's Cingular.)

The "low-fi" version of Opera works with the Dash JVM. (I use it.) I don't know what the differences are, however. It also works with the correct menu key, rather than using the "Q" key.
