Dash Hard Reset by Accident

Tonight I went to plug in my Dash before going to bed and notice that one of my apps had problems connecting to the web so I opened it up and noticed that all of my configuration setups were missing.

I thought to myself that a soft reset might fix the problem, so I did just that. On boot-up, the Dash hung at the green "Direct Push" screen for quite a while. I decided that I would just turn it off and go to bed so I held in the power button for a few seconds. After that, the device began to configure itself like after a hard reset, then shut off about 50% the way through.

I turned it back on and allowed it to complete the configuration and of course realized that I had somehow performed a hard reset.

What did I do wrong? Is there anything that I can learn from this experience as so I don't repeat it in the future? I have read about hard resets, and I did not follow those steps at all.

Luckily I didn't lose much, but this was still frustrating.

Thanks for your input.

well if u did do a hard reset you would of lost everything as a hhard reset wipes it clean....so im not sure what u did....deff not a hard reset though

It was a hard reset. I lost everything. By saying I didn't lose much, I meant that the phone is new, and all of my contacts, etc had been synced up to my PC.

All I really lost was installed apps and settings, especially since I keep most of my stuff on a storage card.

Anyone have any ideas on what I did? I just don't want to repeat myself, or anyone else to make the same mistake that I did.

I was using the Right Menu application. Anyone see any bugs with that installed?

I did that the other day and lost all of my pics and everything. I was heated. Ill never do that again. I cant remember exactly what I did.

Hard reset is when you pull the battery while its on, right?

I've had to do that twice and haven't lost anything :X

Hard reset is essentially a reformat. You lose everything and start over.

Soft reset and pulling the battery are the same thing -- essentially a reboot, you lose nothing.

that's a soft reset. think of it like pulling the power when you're on a computer. when you turn it on, it's essentially a reset. when you format, that's a hard reset.

To complete a hard reset you would have had to clear the memory in the settings or have held down the two home buttons while powering up.

I am having a similar problem with my s620. The other day, i powered off the phone to swap the sim (haven't done this since I first got the phone), and when I tried powering it back on, it just hangs at the direct push green screen. I've left it on and it doesn't progress farther than that. I've tried switching the sim around, no sim, I've pulled the battery out for a reboot. and nothing. after reading ur post i tried holding onto the power button to try a hard reset, but no response either.

How do I do a hard reset???? or what can i do?

Posted by: JwY

when it's off, hold both softkeys and hold the power button for 1-2 seconds. then release the button. it should prompt you if you want to hard reset.

Genuis! it worked. Yay my s620 is back to life again. I missed it for the entire 24hrs it was down!

i have a Dash unlocked, i hold down the home key and back key and then push the power button, and i never seem to get that prompt for hard reset? am i pushing the right keys?

Posted by: mtlcellular

Also, another quick question, if i ever get around to getting the hard reset to work, will it lock my dash again? will i need to get it unlocked again? or will it still be unlocked? thanks

hold the two menu (soft) keys and press the power button. count to three. release the power button but still hold the soft keys down until you get a prompt from the phone. it will be a black screen with white writing asking if you would like to reset the phone.

Posted by: mtlcellular

Ok,. but is the black screen suppose to popup right away?
I get the Tmobile screen, then the WM5 push green screen.
I hold down those 2 buttons, the home and back keys, push power and still nothing

it's the softkeys above the home and arrow. don't hold the home or arrow.

Got it,
Well it reset to factory defaults however it now asks to click on SEND and not 0 in order to put it to factory defaults.

But it didnt fix my phone not vibrating problem? Do you know what could be causing this problem?

Posted by: JwY

what's the vibrate problem?

do you have time to try something? i'm just wondering if xt9 would be prevented from being installed if you hard reset, but pull the battery before it starts installing any customizations.

does it say customizing or configuring and give a status bar after hard resetting? if so, before that happens, pull the battery so it doesn't get the chance to do that. then put it back in and boot and let me know if it trieds to configure again. i haven't hard reset in a long time so i can't remember if this is even possible. it's up to you if you want to try it -- just thought it might be okay since you just hard reset anyways.

Posted by: mtlcellular

Just a question before i try to attempt to perform what your asking, how long does it take to actually do the factory hard reset?
because i simply clicked the send key, then it said showed the green windows mobile screen.

Ill try the Xt9 thing, where do i get thsi xt9 customization that you are talking about?

Posted by: JwY

hard reset takes a bit longer than normal to boot -- maybe 3 minutes or so? this is only if you have the dash or is running the t-mobile dash rom. xt9 is the predictive text that's on the extended rom and if this works, it may disable it since so many people hate the predictive text. i can't test it since i have the s620. i'm trying to figure out what's on the t-mobile rom, that's why i'm asking. if you don't have it, that's okay, you don't need to try it.

the s620 doesn't have the function where you hold a key and get the alternative characted. i'm trying to figure out if it's on the rom or a registry hack by seeing if it still works if it doesn't install the customizations.

what's the vibrate problem anyways?

Posted by: mtlcellular

The vibrate problem is that my phone doesnt vibrate when on an incoming call when the vibrate function is enabled.
It used to vibrate, then 2 weeks into using it, it stopped vibrating now. and it seems no one else on the forum has experienced this problem from the searching i did.

As for the predicitive text, i think mine already has the predicitive text installed, as when im typing it sometimes takes the most used words that i type and automatically fills it in for me, then i need to erase the word and retype it.

Posted by: JwY

so hard reset didn't fix the vibrate? has it vibrated at all lately besides calls?

Posted by: mtlcellular

It doesnt even vibrate when someone calls.
Its like its in silent mode all the time.
i tried changing setting from Vibrate to Ring and Vibrate, etc, and nothing.

Ive never had a phone do this to me, especially this early into its life.

Posted by: JwY

i'm presuming you're testing it fresh from a hard reset with nothing installed?
i think that the vibrate motor is malfunctioning, loose, or the wiring to the motor is broken. you probably should exchange it or get it repaired asap.

Posted by: mtlcellular

you think i could repair this myself?
im located in montreal, and i dont think there are any dealers here who can fix HTC handsets.

I show it to some people and they don't even know what it is.

I would have to return it in the US i guess?

you know where i could find the skematics to open this sucker up..lol

Thanks again

Posted by: JwY

sorry, i don't have any schematics. it's going to be hard to find support. unless you're good with eletronics, i wouldn't try it myself. it could potentially just be loose, so if you open it up, you may be able to fix it, but it would void any warranty that stands. did you drop it? it's the first i've heard of the vibrate problem. it's an exca100 right (under the battery)?

Posted by: mtlcellular

Thats the funny thing, i didnt even drop it. I keep it in the case at all times, but we've been experiencing like -35 degrees here in montreal, so i go from hot to freezing cold to hot, maybe that could have affected it?

Also, sometimes when i used to charge the phone, it used to heat up, not the case anymore.

Posted by: JwY

it's -35? wow, i thought -27 was bad with windchill. it's always a possiblility, but i kind of doubt that it's temperature. i can't really offer much more advice right now other than it's a hardware problem.

Posted by: mtlcellular

Thanks anyways, you've already been a great help.
Ill try and see if i can get a new one or get this one repaired.

Thanks again
