Questions about the Blackjack? Post them if You've Got Them

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: Tjash2010

So with the popularity of the "Questions about the A707..." thread I decided i would test that idea here in the smartphones forum.

I have owned the Blackjack since the day it came out, and have owned it longer then any other phone. So post ANY questions you might have and I will awnser them to the best of my ability.

Can you make it so any other button can light up the screen when the phone is locked? IE you can push another button besides the Power Button.

Posted by: Tjash2010

No, you cannot.

This frusterated me when I first got it, so I went through and tried every button, but the power button is the only one that will light up the screen and allow to unlock the phone.

Any way to make the Caller ID fonts bigger.

My files on my micro sd is not available all the time or they either get erased. I might be just doing something wrong but its real annoying.

Is there a way to format the memory card because I pulled mine out of a Motorola V710 and havent erased anything off of it yet. Everything works but its like 50 folders that I dont use. Thanks in advance.

This is possible but it will require rewriting xml code and registry editing. The best thing to do is hope that someone will make an app to do this after figuring out what code and registry edits to do. Until then there really is no easy way unless its a menu option.

Also is any way to make the speaker louder by modding something. Its really loud when my ringer is playing or system sounds but the ear piece and speakerphone is way to low. Anyone know how to change that. This phone would be perfect if that could be changed.

Is there any way to have the message ringtone shorter instead of playing the entire thing out. Like for example if you open a message, it stops. And also, sometimes when you are in the middle of a call you can hear the ringtone.

Are you sure you're looking for the files using File Manager and not "My Stuff"? My Stuff only shows certain file types.

Also, I've never re-formatted a card, but if you connect via ActiveSync and explore the phone, you can open the storage card and delete all the unwanted folders just as you would in File Explorer.

My earpiece is extremely loud without any mods, try pushing the rocker button on the upper left, up a few times, it's pretty easy to adjust the volume lower accidentally

Posted by: InTruDa119

just came from cingular and they are going to trade it in. i think coming from a motorola v710 i was spoiled with a loud speaker. anyone know of some hacks or register tweaking that would increase speaker volume. thwart ear piece or the speakerphone is really low compared to the volume of the ringers or key presses. this is my first samsung device so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Is there any browser or plug-in they will let me stream videos online through my Blackjack. Something that might let me watch Youtube videos or online movie trailers or something like that?

thanks in advance for any help

How do I change default applications? Like choose what program i want to associate with .jpg for example?

My stuff and File Explorer both have different ways of displaying files, different options, and different program associations. I find myself switching between the two all the time just to get done what I want to do! It's ludicrous. Is there any program available that caters to boths features in 1 package?

I honestly think the ear piece on the blackjack is louder than the speakerphone on other phones Ive had... its extremely loud, and Ive spilled water on it. If yours is soft, I would either exchange it or get your ears checked

Can you delete files that came on the phone? or move them to the memory card? if so how? Thanks

Will doing this help the phone move faster?

Posted by: InTruDa119

My ears are just fine the ******** speakerphone is to low on this phone. Trading it in on tuesday so I will see.

Hi, firstly, thanks for posting this thread. It's very helpful to have an "everything goes" kind of place, especially for newer members like yours truly.

I've used my old Moto flip phone for three years now and am looking to switch to the BlackJack very soon.

One trouble that I had with my old phone was that the ringtones it came with were terrible. There were only about five that were actually ringtones. Everything else were "blips" and what not.

Does the BlackJack come with some good ringtones? I know "good" is subject to personal opinion, but just in general. Because I don't want to have to purchase a whole bunch of ringtones from Cingular just to get a few decent ones on my phone.

---

I'd love to be able to set my own uncut, full-song mp3's as ringtones for individual callers, including my default ringtone, but from what I can tell, this is a tedious process and not very user-friendly for inexperienced cell phone users.

Is the BlacJack capable of having various uncut mp3 files used as ringer ID's?

If so, is this a difficult process? Would I have to purchase a separate program to do this?

Thanks for your time, cheers!

Posted by: Tjash2010

Well,

I wouldnt exactly say the ringtones are good in any aspect. It comes with about 10 tones and maybe 1 of those are descent. Besides that they all are just very basic tones. I right away downloaded a new tone.

From what I know, No you cannot have full songs as a ringtone. I believe it has to be a certain size. It is a very tedeous project to cut down all the ring tones to what you like. You have to go back several times and make sure you've got what you've want.

You can normally find free programs for making your ringtones, I cant remember what I used. But I am sure the other members will anwser to that. I just gave up on making my own ringtones because it just took to much time.

You can delete content that came on the phone, but not move it to the card. When you are in the settings and looking through your sounds, wallpapers, etc. you can press the menu key and then select "delete sounds" or whatever you are wanting to delete.

It really doesnt help the phone is speed thought. So I just leave the files on the phone so they are there incase I decide to sell.

Actually. I think there is a program to do this. I read about it on this forum. It is called Orb. It lets you stream Youtube videos and such to the phone. Google it if you want to find more information.

Posted by: thelimejello

Thanks Tjash, I appreciate your advice, and I will look around for a thread that will help me find a free program that can cut my mp3's.

Posted by: juin21

Uhm....I've got full length mp3's playing on my phone. Just go find your mp3 and set it as the ringtone.

I've read at least a dozen separate reviews on the BlackJack and the general perception is that it's a solid smartphone, but a universal quip seems to be the dismal battery life.

I'm on the fence with purchasing this phone and my main concern at this point is battery life. If this phone is going to die on me while I'm out and about, then I'd rather steer clear of it and just opt for something else.

Granted, I don't need my phone glued to the side of my face, but I do use it a decent amount.

I'm a student and I wouldn't be able to charge it while I'm out (and carrying around the second battery in my pocket isn't very appealing, no matter how I look at it).

On a daily basis, I need:

- At least 2 hours of talk time out of my phone.
- Check email once or twice (likewise with responding to them).
- A decent amount of AOL Instant Messaging. (I'm not sure how IM'ing is measured, but I usually have about 5 conversations for about 10 minutes each, but that's a rough estimation.)

I will probably never use its Bluetooth features. And I would need it to last me a full 12-hour work day (from about 8:00 AM to 10:00 PM).

Provided that I switch off the 3G feature, would I be disappointed by the BlackJack's battery life?

I don't know if this matters, but I do have a habit of charging my phone everynight, so that's not a problem.

Thanks for your time, cheers mate. =)

if you turn off the 3g feature your phone will last you twice as long! I do the same things you mentioned and it lasted me the whole day and some juice left for the next day! Crazy I tell you! 3G drains the battery quick as hell! but the high speeds are nice! So what I did is get an extended battery and leave 3g on all the time! I know later down the road they'll be firware updates or something like the motorola Q that fixes a lot of issues and improves battery life.

That roughly describes my use and I get thru the day WITHOUT disabling 3G. As long as you can generally charge it each night, you should be fine.

I want to be able to stream video on my blackjack. I looked at the ORB program mentioned but it wants you to install a file on a window-only computer first and then the phone gets the broadcast from that computer. I am using a MAC OSX computer, so I cant go about streaming this way.
Any suggestions on how I can stream some videos?

Just wanted to say thanks to all of the users taking time out of their day to help out fellow BlackJack users/potential users. I found all of the advice very useful.

And if anyone is interested in knowing, I am now a full-fledged BlackJack user. =) Just got the phone a few hours ago and am loving it so far.

Get a SlingBox...plunk down 100-150 for a slingbox AV...get the client for your Mac and BJ and stream all the TV you want from your cable box or DVR/TIVO. Its probably the best investment I've ever made. I picked up a Slingbox Pro though (200-250).

I sort of want to try ORB too...but it doesn't play nicely with OS X.

(of course you could just get an intel mac mini)

Anyone else experience this?

After using certain programs like TCPMP, the homepage screen acts as if the top row doesn't exist anymore. If you have any programs still running in the background, you'll still see that program peeking through the top.

This happens after I use TCPMP and Map4PDA.

It goes away after I reset the phone. But that's annoying.

Anyone have a solution for this or is this just me?

Happens to everyone. Don't think anyone knows why or has a fix. But I could be wrong

How can I measure the data used by my device ? There is no counter that shows total data used by all applications (IE/WindowsMedia/IM/RSS). My Nokia 6682 had a counter for data used. Infact, it showed the data used for every active connection independent of the application(s) using it. Anything similar or close in Windows Mobile 5 ?

Has anyone else experienced problems logging into MySpace through Internet Explorer?

I've double-checked that my information is correct and when I hit [LOGIN], it always takes me to the "You must be logged-in to do that!" page.

Note: I'm not sure if this matters, but my account is not on "Private."

Posted by: Diesel0026

Yes....I just get repeatedly sent to a "u must be logged in to do that"

I have had a Black Jack for a few weeks now. I can and know how to put mp3 as ring tones, does anyone know a specific program that is easy to use to shorten the ring tones or mix them with a few different songs? Have been searching the net and some of them are confusing.

Thanks for the help.

The easiest one I have found is audacity, google it. It's free too.
