Blackjack-OpenDNS-Fix

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: nickbarb

OK, I have the fix for the Blackjack. Goto start/settings/connections/gprs/gprs and hit the right soft key (menu). You will want to add a new connection (Add Gprs) I called mine "OpenDNS" without the qoutes. For cingular add these settings:

Connects to: The Internet
Access point: wap.cingular
User Name: WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM
Password: CINGULAR1
Primary DNS: 208.67.222.222
Secondary DNS: 208.67.220.220
IP address: nothing

Now go back to the connections screen (the wireless manager will be highlighted) goto the advance menu by hitting the softkey menu. Just change the Internet connection: to OpenDNS and reset. Make sure you have cleared your memory cache!

Peephole's fix will not work because of the default GPRS overides any settings. You have to create a new connection!

To clear the memory cache you have to start your internet explorer and goto menu/options/memory and then clear temp/clear cookies/clear history.

If you need to go to the medianet site you will have to change your connection back to Medianet so don't delete it!

Moved to proper forum.

Posted by: tbl178

what does open dns do anyway?

Posted by: dwcliff703

Allows you internet access that isn't going thru the cingular dns servers (very slow lag time to connect). Really speeds up your access time to websites.

Posted by: rhsauer

When I go to welcome.opendns.com it still tells me I'm not using the opendns dns servers. Does that work for anyone else?

Posted by: nickbarb

I did delete the DNS in the registry and found that it will not use the DNS servers without it so you have to add this as "peephole" suggested.

To add the DNS Servers for OpenDNS go to:

HKLM\Comm\WWAN1-wap.cingular-1\Parms\TCPIP

Create a new MultiLine String Value called "DNS" and add the two servers as its Values:

208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220

If you follow the instructions and add a new connection you will be golden. Just remember to clear all of your memory cache before checking to see if it works.

BTW. I have 27 blackjacks now working with this and the only problem I have found is that they won't connect to Medianet..Big Deal!!!

Not having any luck with this tweak either. Even after a couple of attempts at the reg edits and the connection add. I'm missing something, just can't figure out what it is.

can you explain what you mean by missing something? if you did everything in this thread then you shoud't be missing anything. i did it and everything seems to be a little faster, but still not as fast as i expected.

Posted by: graphiteRT

By missing I mean a setting that isn't right. I've gone through the steps deliberately and repeatedly, but the opendns page still shows an error and the follow-up link indicates it's not a cache issue.

Posted by: Touareg

With this mod improve over T-Mobile as well? Obviously, the settings would need to be different than what was provided for Cingular.

Posted by: akessler

Didn't work for me either, at first.
The fix is easy.
In Internet Explorer, hit Menu/Tools/Options/Connections
In Select network:
Pick The Internet instead of WAP Network of whatever else was there
and you'll get the Welcome to OpenDNS! with the giant orange check mark.

An additional question - a nearby post http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=1078661 talks about wap.cingular vs. isp.cingular access points and suggests the isp.cingular might be quicker with less errors.

Yet this post uses wap.cingular as the access point. Any thoughts why? Would isp.cingular work just as well? Would any of the other settings change?
Thanx.

Posted by: nickbarb

You can't use isp.cingular unless you have the pda unlimited data plan.

This fix is for a blackjack phone, any other providers or phone would or could be checked thru the OpenDNS site.

If you have done all the above! Make sure you are NOT connected to the internet first. Hit the power button once and disconnect your connection if present. Than start your internet (but don't connect) goto the options and clear all your memory. Now power off your device and when it starts you can connect to the internet. Goto the address bar and type welcome.opendns.com and you will get the check mark provided you have done everything as stated.

Posted by: eboychik

Thanks - I got the orange check mark and used the DSL speed test found this to be much faster than before (I'm in an Edge-only area right now).

Maybe you could combine the three different pieces of instruction in this topic into one for other people.

Posted by: maevro

I have tried my Blackjack with a few different DNS servers including this one and 4.2.2.1

To be honest, they all are pretty on par with each other, but all are much faster then the original 0.0.0.0

Posted by: jomo25

This wouldn't improve your download speed. It would only shorten the "seek" or "locating" time of the URL. So, overall pages would load faster, but only because they are found more quickly. The network speed won't be affected by this.

Posted by: F.U.H.F

Sadly, IE on WM5 is horrific at loading pages (non WAP). The "connecting, locating" will be alot quicker thus improving the overall browsing experience i guess, but the actual load time of the websites (when the load bar appears at the bottom) will not be any faster.
This is bad news considering my Blackberry's on Edge network were just as fast, if not faster.

Still no joy on the welcome page, but I am seeing faster connections after making this tweak, so I'm satisfied for the time being.

How do you do a reg edit? I'm so confused.

Posted by: F.U.H.F

Well thanks to nickbarb and everyone else for helping. I finally got it working and the "welcome.opendns.com" page loads with a checkmark. Will test tomorrow for connection times when im using the phone to surf the web.

Anyways, now i'll see if i can help others...

HITECHY, go to this site for a REGISTRY EDITOR app download. You should actually download teh registry editor & also download Surreal so everything can be automatically unlocked for you (upon installing surreal through your phone and restarting).
http://surrealnetworks.com/mpx/AppUnlockReg.htm

Once you do that, follow the steps nickbarb has posted. Please keep in mind you must enter in the exact dns addresses he has posted above (208.67.222.222, etc...). I was trying to put in addresses which belonged in my residence state and that didnt work for some reason.
Also, dont forget to go into the Connections setting in IE and change the network to "the internet" as someone in here suggested.

Another thing, i'd suggest you installing surreal first on your phone since you cannot use the registry editor properly until after you've installed surreal which "unlocks" your phone to use the editor.

I cannot find a registry editor that will allow me to make changes to the values. I've tried both PHM and Resco. Are other people encountering this problem? Has anyone found other registry editors that worked for them?

Make sure your device is application unlocked (refer to previous post in this thread). The link to SurrealNetworks provides a utility to unlock your phone. Reboot after installing and running the SurrealNetworks utility and you should then be able to edit the registry using one of these tools.

If you still have problems after this, post what you're experiencing and maybe someone can help you.

so i did speed test of 1mb on both connections and i got these results:
1mb on open DNS 517kbits/sec
1mb on media net 817kbits/sec
both test were done on the 3g network

it seems that media net was faster at this instance.

Posted by: dgelfuso

I followed the directions and I get the red "X" and the Oops page?

Posted by: maevro

I do not find any better results. I have been using 4.2.2.1 as my Primary DNS and most of the time I do not get any locating, it goes to opening pretty fast.

Do that many people really find they get better results with the OpenDNS? Perhaps it is the area that I am in, being I am in 3G so much?

Was I supposed to delete a reg entry prior to adding the one named "DNS"?

If all you did was change the DNS servers under MediaNet connections, it won't make any difference because the MediaNet uses preset servers found in the registry.

No, I followed the entire registry edit and all the other instructions. Even through all of that, I still didn't find it to be anything 'quicker' in helping web pages load any faster.

Posted by: acevntura5

i cant get this to work. i have followed the instructions. i think that my problem might be the reg edits because i am new to them. this is exactly what i did. in the reg editor i went to HKEY_LOCAL_MAC.../comm/WWAN1-wap.cinguar/parms/TCPIP then hit the right soft key -> new values then selected Multi-string value. for value name i put "DNS" for the Value data i put "208.67.222.222, 208.67.220.220" this is where my question is. is this the proper way to put in the values for the multi string value? or should i do something different. i have done everything else, this must be my problem
any advice?

To Ace Ventura: you can't separate these two DNS addresses with a comma. You need to pick multi string, and then add string (for the first one) and add string (for the second one).

To Pimp: this is not done in the explorer address bar. This is done by editing the registry of the operating system. There are several registry editors out there. Do a search for reg editor. I use Resco, and it does not have many of the problems the free reg editors seem to have. You can buy it online via Handango. This is not difficult, but also not for the fainthearted. You can turn your smartphone into a paperweight if you enter the wrong character, but if you can follow the directions in this forum, it will work - at least, it has for me.

i am confused how you add the two strings individually. in TCPIP if i select menue-> new value->multi-string there are three boxes that come up. value name, value data, and value type. how do i then add an individual string for the first one and then for the second one. all that i can figure out to do is put them both in the value data box ( but obviously that is wrong). any help?

And to pimp i am just going to HKEY_LOCAL_MAC... i believe that is what HKLM is short for. hope that helps

Once you get into the Multi-String Value page, go to "value data" row and hit the "OK" (center button) or the Enter key on your keypad. Here you will be presented with a blank page to enter in your data and you will enter in 208.67.222.222. After entering in that value, press the Enter key on the keypad, this will bring the cursor down to the next line. Once that has happened, enter in the 2nd value 208.67.220.220

This is the proper way of entering in value data.

Yes, hklm is short for hkey_local_mac...

Read my previous post, all you have to do is hit the enter key once your on the value data row. Then from there you enter the first value, hit the enter key (like you would in emails or sms's or any other word apps) to start a new line below. Then enter in the second value.

NO, read the whole thread please. This has nothing to do with the address bar. This is the system registry. You need a registry edit app to add the new DNS settings. But before being able to use this app to edit or add settings, you need to "App Unlock" your phone so that these apps may be enabled to usability on your phone.

I think it is the first part I am having trouble with. I have a reg editor. Now when I go through the HKLM\Comm\WWAN1-wap.cingular-1\Parms\TCPIP step of the process, do I actually click ok on the TCPIP folder? And if so, do I press value from there, and have a whole list of other different folders/values come up? And then do I press menu, new value, multi-string? Because that is what I have been doing.

-Also on the second part of the process, where it says "change the Internet connection: to OpenDNS and reset", does the 'reset' actually mean anything? I am sorry if I am asking dumb questions, just trying to trouble shoot the whole thing. And when I clear my memory cache, it is the file, cookies and history, right? I am not missing anything, am I?

Again, thank you everybody for all of your help!

That's weird because I have these menu options: Meuu>File>New>Multi Line String Value and the I get one box labeled "Name:". When I push the down arrow, I get into another area where I can type data.

Are we looking at two different things, do we have two different programs, and if so is that the problem?

Posted by: dgelfuso

I don't know what I did, but I got it to work. I went back to the connections menu under settings and chose advanced and set Internet back to MediaNet. I used IE, then went back and changed it to OpenDNS and everything worked as expected. Now all I have to do to switch between MediaNet and OpenDNS on IE is select either Internet or Wap Network under connections in IE.

Much appreciated with all this info Nick but I'm still getting the "Oops" message on the opendns site on my Blackjack. I've followed all your steps exactly and checked over thoroughly. REG edit, connection settings, wireless off and cache cleared all as per instructed....

From a fresh install is there anything else I may need to take into account? You mentioned something about deleting a previous DNS entry? Is there any info I can give you to clarify.

Really appreciate you being so active with the help on this one.

Posted by: jomo25

Wow lots of agonizing here. Honestly, I don't think the change makes a marked improvement over the normal connection. Again, the download speeds are NOT affected by this. 3G is 3G, Edge is Edge, etc. This would only improve the "locating" time of DNS to get the IP address. Yes, its faster, but not so much that it's worth fretting over IMHO.

Goto the address bar and type welcome.opendns.com and you will get the check mark provided you have done everything as stated.

Make sure you're connecting to "The Internet" not to WAP. That was the step I was missing but now it's working after I went to IE - Menu (right softkey) - Tools - Options - Connections - Connects To: "The Internet".

Yes, its faster, but not so much that it's worth fretting over IMHO.

The reason behind this was to get the Blackjack to work with "OpenDns" servers. Speed improvements are dependent on the user and I have found that "OpenDns" is the best over the slow Cingular servers. The problem with giving instructions like these are that people interpet them differently or just don't follow them. I like to figure things like this out so it's fun for me. For me anything over the standard score is a marked improvement. I have met many great minds on the internet that simply won't give info like this out because of the agonizing and PM's that they get. SO IMHO, if you don't think it's worth it don't use it. Also for what it's worth the "Blackjack" offers what more companys should be selling to the public. It's an great phone!

Great... that was the missing link... much appreciated for your help.

One thing I noticed also that irrespective of whether I use the new OpenDNS connection or the existing MediaNet one pre-setup by Cingular, that I now still am going through the OpenDNS servers. Are we sure the OpenDNS new connection is really the key here... I have a hunch its the new registry key that does the work to override the defaults. Any thoughts on this anyone?

I noticed that the opendns servers are listed in the medianet settings, but i verified they are not being used. If I select "Internet" in IE which I have set up to use the OpenDNS I get the orange check mark, but cannot access cingular medianet features. If I merely select "Wap Network" in IE which I left to use MediaNet I get the red check mark and can access MediaNet.

If you guys read the whole thread carefully (1st post!!), you will notice that he states MEDIANET will not work with this. Most people dont use medianet. But if you do, then dont worry about using opendns.

Ok... I'm trying to add in the registry strings. I keep getting an error that line 1 is not a valid hex key. I am using Total Commander and attempting to add a new multiline string reg entry. It brings up a window that allows me to enter in a string, then drop a line and enter another string, but for some reason its requesting a hex entry instead of a string entry. Can anyone shed some light on this?

Ok, I used regeditSTG instead and got that part done. Anyone trying this with total commander needs a better registry editor.

The reason for the additional DNS regkey is to override the Cingular DNS servers right? Why not just edit the "DHCPDNS" key that's in the same folder and change those servers to the OpenDNS ones? Wouldn't that accomplish the same thing and it wouldn't be necessary to add a new connection?

I think you're right. With the DNS registry key added, confirming that my IE settings were on "The Internet" and NO OTHER CHANGES, I get the checkmark from http://welcome.opendns.com and if I attempt to go to the medianet bookmark, I actually get an OpenDNS search page (http://ash.guide.opendns.com/?url=home) because it can't locate the normal URL for media net (http://home). According to the little "learn more" link at the top of that opendns page, it is indeed using the opendns name servers already.

It appears that the new internet connection is unnecessary, provided that you don't care about the media net site ... and I don't
