Can't get the XV6700 to stop freezing

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: b&w_yamaha

Just like the title says I can't get this damn phone to stop freezing when trying to answer calls. It doesn't matter if the memory card is in, out or whatever. Randomly/periodically it will freeze on the answer/ignore screen when receiving a call. I have to soft reset it to get it to resume. I am on my 5th phone with my 6th one coming soon. Verizon won't let me get a new phone and I am totally done with this phone. Does anyone have any ideas as to what to do? I have tried the hard reset without installing the verizon software... worked great for about 3 days and then froze. As the phone stands it is total virgin with no mods or any software installed and it froze. I did have the memory card in the phone the last few days and it froze 3 times in a row from the same person calling. I don't understand this damn phone... sad thing is I really love this phone it is just a POS with this freezing issue. Please help

Try these regedits, the 6700 virgin is not the most stable of units but I havent had a problem since putting these in....

DSOD RELATED IMPROVMENTS

HKLM\Drivers\SDCARD\SDBusDriver
PowerUpPollingInterval - 2 (Dword)
PowerUpPollingTime - 2000 (Dword)
These settings we're borrowed from the Treo 700w.

HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Power\States \Suspend
dsk1 - 2 (DWORD)
Prevents the SD Card from going into suspend; the main cause of DSOD
cam1 - 4 (DWORD)

Thank you soooooo much for responding.... if you don't mind me asking... do you have the memory card installed in your phone or not? Also, is it better to run the phone without all the verizon software or not? What seems to work for you and what is your current configuration?

Posted by: jady

Well, I played around a lot with a bunch of software demos and hacks when I first got it, messed with just about everything. Then I hard rebooted without the verizon ROM, only did these Regedits I posted hear, and kept the software to minimum. I have no today plugins but if I did they would only be in main memory.I am over clocked at 520Mhz with xcpuscalar. I use a 1-gig generic SD card and all my other software and games are on here.

i have found that the less bells and whistles you have, the faster and more stable this device is.

I've experienced a similar problem. The only short-term fix was to soft-reset. I haven't found a long-term fix.

I have a new problem though. I install PhoneAlarm Saturday. Later that day I had the same problem as you mentioned which forced me to soft reset. Every single time the phone came up after that it would hard freeze (can't click anything, no sounds, stops talking to VZW (calls immediately go to vmail), clock doesn't increment, etc). It's literally KIA. It always happens within 15 seconds or so of the phone booting (immediately following the PIN prompt). Immediately before it hard freezes ActiveSync pops up and tries to sync (regardless of whether the radio is on or off, USB is connected or not, etc. I managed through speedy tapping to shut off the "as they arrive" settings in the Active Sync scheduler. That didn't help. I managed to get into the Today item settings and disable PhoneAlarm. That didn't help either.

This thing is seriously screwed up. Any ideas before I hard-reset it?

Thanks
J

I had issues with phone alarm as well. hard reboot and leave it off. Every little "widget" program on this device has a chance of crashing it. If you find a combination that works for you then great but nothing is guaranteed.

In the interests of not cross-posting, I'll link to my (very) recent post in another thread explaining why you are experiencing freezes with the hope that it'll help you keep your device running better.

Go read it.

Posted by: b&w_yamaha

I input all the hacks on the list the jady said plus watch everything I reinstalled and so far knock on wood the phone has worked 100% with no freezes. I reformatted the memory card just to make sure and only put back on backed up software that way if I have to reinstall while on the road I have all the original .cab files. Either way though I have a brand new XV6700 coming from verizon making this phone 6 they have sent me. I would really like to know these settings are working and will gladly keep this phone.

Good advice in his post............ajm has helped me a bunch with the info in his posts so I would trust his opinion and advice.

I am currently setting up the brand new XV6700... the wierd thing is... the phone is verizon oem config. now and it runs faster than the one that was modded for removal of the verizon add-on software. This whole phone feels better build quality too... kinda wierd... oh well

Posted by: ajm

b&w_yamaha: I have experienced this as well. I think it's good to defragment your main flash memory after a while by doing a full backup, hard reset, then full restore. This has the same effect. As far as feeling sturdier...I think we get used to the feel of our own keyboard slider and any replacement will initially feel sturdier even if it will ultimately end up nicely broken in just as much as the unit it replaced.

I do not remove the verizon customizations. Those that do so seem to complain more about problems with their phones. I don't have any problem with the Verizon software except maybe the size of the MMS program.

Posted by: mrploww

I too have the freezing problem on my 6700. I am on my 2nd phone and this one is locking up probably every other call when I try to answer it. I don't think there is anything more frustrating! I am going to try these reg hacks listed above.

Thank you!

I was having the same freezing issue and after opening a case and making a call to UTStarcom I got this from UTStarcom's tech support rep:

Response (XXXXXX) 01/04/2007 03:19 PM
Have you tried a hard reset on the device?

There will be an update on this phone with Verizon. An issue it will fix is if your doing Wireless sync with Verizon or Push from your server and when trying to make a call or receive a call the phone will freeze or it will not acknowledge the call. The fix is that the Voice call will dominant the data call. So the phone call will go through and the data call will not stop that is through either 1X and some EVDO CDMA connections. The software will be released some time around the mid first quarter of this year.

Customer (XXXXXXX) 01/04/2007 02:41 PM
I have a Verizon xv6700 that has issues with the phone application. The phone only answers incoming calls 1 in 4 times correctly. The phone will either not answer the call (rings and rings, but won't pick up after hitting the "answer" softkey) or answers the call in speakerphone mode (VERY annoying when at work). I have recently purchased a Plantronics Discovery 640 headset and the problems still occur using the headset to answer calls. Rebooting the phone resolves the issue for a short while but comes back after an hour or so of inactivity. This problem is NOT new to this device, and I am on my SECOND replacement phone from Verizon for various other issues with my first two 6700's. THis exact problem also happened on my first 2 6700's. I have installed the latest updates from this site with no luck in resolving this issue. I have NO other software installed on this phone/PDA other than the factory installed software. Verizon techs have told me there's nothing wrong with the phone from their testing and said they cannot re-create the problem

PLEASE HELP, This problem makes this phone almost unusable. Is there an update or patch to the phone application available (even if it's in beta?)

Looks like there is hope!!!

Keep an eye on the UTStarcom site for the update in the next months.

Posted by: b&w_yamaha

Wow if only they actually fixed the issues that were relevant to what everyone else is complaining about on here. The 6th replacement froze (DSOD) on me... did the verizon software removal hack and everyone of the registry hacks mentioned about and the phone has been perfect for 30+ hours. If this phone fails... 700W/P here I come...

Posted by: mrploww

Jady, thank you very much for the registry hacks. It seems to have solved my issues with locking up. I have not rebooted the phone since probably Thursday of last week. That is a new record for this thing!

Posted by: jady

No prob, they arent mine, I just reposted them. Glad to help!!

Posted by: b&w_yamaha

same here... my phone has been working sinec jady's reply... I have no froze or anything... phone is actually dependable... who would have known? LMAO

Posted by: b&w_yamaha

well I got my first freeze episode yesterday. The weird thing was that the fix was to eject the memory card and reinsert it. Kinda random

It's Windows, it's gonna crash. It's all part of the harmony of the universe

If it's down to a crash a week, I am happy

Has anyone noticed since this fix (possibly being I am without all the verizon software... when I take a pic and click the little envelope to send it comes up with the Send Via MMS screen like it should... but when I click on send it just sits there... I have to press the end call button and go into pictures and then tap and hold and select send to send the pic... it is rather annoying.... any help?

Posted by: jady

I cant send pic or flix messages at all..........never could, with or without the verizon customizations.

Posted by: b&w_yamaha

I installed that MMS.cab from the extended partition on the phone.... I got another freeze when calling... I kicked the memory card out again and it cleaned the screen. I have nothing on my memory card except a folder that has backup of .cabs for when I reinstall I have them with me if I am traveling... even though I am selecting to install the software to the phone... but I am running the original install .cab from the memory card do you think that could have caused it? Nothing is linked to the memory card and I have nothing installed except wireless sync and the mms .cab

bump anyone?

I have the exact same issue w/ sending pix.
I hard reset my phone, and stop the Verizon customizations. I installed wireless sync/mms/bt and that's it.
I haven't done the registry hacks listed above, but I haven't had to reset for a week either.
I'm going to try installing each verizon cab 1 at a time to see if anything fixes it. Then I'll post my results.
After I figure out what needs to be installed to fix this, I'll just do another hard-reset and install the stuff I need.

OK - try this.
Take a picture, and click on the little envelope to send it.
You should see 2 options, "Send via MMS" & "Send via E-Mail".
Select "Send via E-Mail".
When I did this, it immediately goes to select an account and shows me the following choices.
Select an account

Text Messages

Outlook E-Mail

MMS
User@User.com
New Pix Message (MMS)
User@User.com

This is what it use to look like before the unbranded phone.
From here I select "New Pix Message (MMS)"
and it works fine.

Is that how you expected it work? or act?
Or did you get a different result when you first got you phone?

When I first did this unbranded trick without doing all these registry hacks I would just click on the envelope and select via mms and it would work. I don't know... lemme try this and get back to you

Posted by: b&w_yamaha

that works for me... great find... this should be noted as a work around

By any chance do you leave Wi-Fi on? I've noticed that when enabled it sometimes takes a few seconds to wake from standby. I think some people get impatient and soft-reset (which just causes more problems)

Why not let Verizon's software install instead of doing the hard-soft-reset trick? I have the Verizon software installed and don't get freezes. You say you have a 'virgin' phone yet it is in fact heavily modified.

Everybody else who complains about their phone freezing, with or without a storage card and third-party software, seems to have done this destructive hack on their phone that renders it completely non-provisioned by Verizon. Besides saving memory there is really no reason at all, IMO, to do this mother-of-all-hacks. Those who say it makes their phone snappier probably are just seeing the effects of a fresh hard reset. And all the talk about how good the hack was seems to have happened before the ROM update was released.

How about just letting Verizon set the phone up the way it was intended to be set up? Maybe then your freezes will go away.

Posted by: b&w_yamaha

so your saying reformat it 100% and leave it? Or are you saying reformat it back with all the verizon installed softare and perform the registry changes above? I tried the phone 100% with no registry changes and that is why I have exchanged 6 of them.

Posted by: FastRX8

Personally for me, I've never had the phone work as fast as it works now.
It wakes up incredibly fast, and responds very quickly to everything.
I did a hard-reset, and stopped all the verizon mods from installing.
I re-formatted the SD Card.
Then I install the generic wireless sync cab from OTA and MMS from the extended rom (which I've copied to my sd card).
This setting works great for me and 2 other phones.
My wife's is working just as well w/ this new setup. Never ran that fast before.
My manager has the same phone, and he was ready to sell it. He's done plenty of hard resets, but the phone was always lacking in response time.
I did this for him, and he's very happy w/ it now.
I've done so many hard-resets recently, trying to fix 3 phones, I actually made a txt file that shows step-by-step what I do each time so I can do it quicker.
I have SPC Pocket Tips & Tricks which I install to the SD Card and use for the tweaks.
I'm eventually going to make a CAB file that does all my registry hacks for me so I won't need SPC Pocket Tips & Tricks anymore. (Just gotta figure out how to make a cab file.)

I don't have W-fi enabled on my phone.
I don't install the cab's because they take up too much memory.
I don't use Active Sync either nor the Pocket Outlook and would like to remove this stuff from my phone.

The only reason I ever tried the "hacks" is because I was forced to look for solutions not addressed by Verizon or Starcom.

When you notice your phone ringing 2x instead of 4x before it goes to VM or low volume, how it constantly tries to use the Wi-Fi instead of the EvDO connection that you pay for each month, or how the volume slider button goes crazy on you, you'll do the hacks too.

I don't doubt that you have these issues but I can say for certain that I don't have any of those problems and my Verizon-provisioned software is all installed.

Here are the hacks that I have done:

- Multi-NAI
- Enable DUN
- Bluetooth and SDCard Suspend Fix
- Improving Tower Polling / Ring Response Times
- Eliminate TXT Sent Notification
- Keyboard LED time

I also
- Run MemMaid regularly
- Avoid soft resetting as much as possible (can require patience)
- Close programs that come with an Exit button
- Don't use Magic Button or another task manager/closer
- Don't force programs to close that have no Exit button
- Leave Wi-Fi off when not in use
- Avoid installing software to Storage Card that needs to remain running (eg Today plugins)
- Don't configure Outlook to check (pull) any of my mail
- Use Verizon's Wireless Sync with Push mode activated (even for POP3)
- Don't sync any data with Outlook (or any program) on my desktop
- Made my PPC look nice using the Vista Theme linked to in my sig
- Avoid any program that heavily customizes/themes/skins my Today screen or complete interface
- Immediately uninstall software that causes freezing
- Regularly backup so that if I get messed up I can restore to a safe point
- Compress many executables stored in Main Memory using UPX (linked to in my sig as EXE Compressor) to fit everything
- Try not to let the battery run down to nothing (which causes power management to start terminating things)
- Have .NET CF 2 installed (to my Storage Card, believe it or not, with much reluctance and testing)
- Rarely use .NET-based software and never leave it running
- Never overclock my device
- Never meddle with Extended ROM or OEM-supplied software

I don't know that any of this has anything to do with preventing any problems -- I'm just throwing it out there in case it helps anybody who is questioning their own usage. I know that there are people who abuse the hell out of their devices, install whatever they want to wherever they want, and overclock their processors and have very little problems, but I'm not that fearless.

So you didn't do all of the hacks that Jady listed I take it... no problems with freeznig answering calls... or anything... even with all the verizon software added? Do you have contact pictures assigned?

Posted by: jady

It does happen but it isnt common, I know from his previous posts that he is a stickler for keeping his OS nice and neat. That probably helps.

Posted by: b&w_yamaha

Don't take this as I am unappreciative of your or ajms help.... don't think i am trying to be mean about this... but I am just trying to get a straight forward answer here... I keep getting beating around the bush follow up with more questions...

I am just trying to find out if his phone is loaded with the verizon software... and also... if he followed your hacks or just did a few... and if he did a few what are they. He mentioned some but still never answered if he was running any of yours or not.

No offence taken bro, from what I understand from reading his posts, ajm is running all the vzw customizations and only the reg edits in his sig.

He has mentioned that the memory gets fragmented as the phone is used so he restores a backup often to keep it snappy. He has a point, I am going to try running a minimum of software and see if it slows down with time.

I was having a big problem with Wisbar and Wisbar Advanced desktop slowing and freezing the device. I hard rebooted, only installed those 2 apps, Weather Panel, and a picture speed dialer and so far it is nice and fast with no other BS on the system. I'll keep you guys informed.

Posted by: b&w_yamaha

Thanks jady... much appreciated... are you trying it with the vzw customizations?

Posted by: jady

Nah, I tryed them once but noticed no real benefits to having them. Not worth the trade off in memory to me.

So far having Wisbar Advance, Wisbar Desktop, Weather Panel, and Screen dial has been really stable all day. I think that WM5 just can't handle that many today plugins installed, even if they have been uninstalled.

I keep all my .cab files and a backup of all my PIM data on my SD card so if I do need to Hard reboot, I can do it anywhere and be back up and running in less than 20 min.
