Sample mp3's fine but MPT converted mp3's won't play on v323

Hello, I'm a noobie to this forum but after days of searching and trying I still can't find any thread with a similar issue. My wife's phone v323 (US Cellular) is a great phone but when I tried to install a custom mp3 ringtone created from a wav file using MPT (latest update installed) it transfers to phone without problem but will not play! I tried a couple different mp3's from the MPT Samples and they work fine. The converted custom mp3 has a similar bit rate as the Samples and I can play it in MPT after converting and have used MPT to store it in a new location on my computer and then gone back to it and played it from that location; in MPT and MS Media Player! I've tried installing and then cycling the phone off and on, but that didn't make any difference. What am I missing here? I know the file is on the phone 'cause I can see it and try to play it, but it just flashes the "playing" bar real fast and no sound comes out. It is a small file that I want to use, but I've tried this with a much larger file with the same result.
BTW - I also have a modded v325i (Verizon) that I've tried the same thing on (install custom mp3 ringtone) with the exact same results.
Any idea where this noob has screwed up?
Thank you for your replies!

Hello??? Anybody out there???

I have not had satisfactory experiences using MPT for loading custom ringtones or MP3s in terms of quality and sometimes inability to play. MPT sometimes changes the bitrate. I recommend trying P2KTools to load the MP3 file and try that. Just my experience.

I had this same problem. It seems that MPT will only convert the MP3 properly if it starts as a CD-Quality 44.1k stereo. So find a good mp3 editing program ( I use sound forge) crop your mp3 and save it as Cd-quality, then use MPT to get it onto the phone. Thats what worked for me, now I have the song from that caveman gieco commercial as my ringtone (Royksopp - Remind me).

P.s. before I figured this out all of the songs would upload just fine, but the phone wouldn't play them

If you used the "right" module of MPT to transfer MP3s it wouldn't change a thing in the file. This has been covered before. Within Multimedia Studio - DO use File Transfer Studio. DO NOT use the Melody Studio as it WILL change the bitrate.

I've been transferring 192k stereo MP3s to my K1 just fine this way and nothing in the file gets modified. Same with the old 64k mono MP3s that I used to load on my V635, V557, V551, V400...

Nice thing about MPT is that it manages the databases on the phone for you. No need to transfer the files then delete the databases and reboot the phone. And if you have ringers assigned to MANY people, you won't have to go back in and reassign them because you blew away the database...

Thank you for the suggestions. I will check into getting a copy of Sound Forge and re-convert the files as Luther138 suggests and then try to upload them using MPT.
I'll post back after I've had a chance to try this.

Thanks hytran for the great advice. I will certainly give it another try for all the reasons you stated.

It's a quirk, no doubt. I'm sure the conspiracy theorists will come up with all sorts of reasons why it works that way (ie, if your ringtones end up sounding crappy, maybe you'll buy some from us, etc). I'm sure it was designed that way for TRIPLETS phones where you barely had enough space for a couple midlets, let alone big ringtones. You'd only need one tool if they allowed you to specify all the MP3 parameters...

What I've always found funny about MPT - a lot of us can be hypocritical - buying MPT while downloading RSD

Well I have been fortunate in that 3 of the phones I have purchased came with the MPT CD. But I have one ringtone (on old style black carbon phone ringer) that works great on my old Nokia, but I cannot get to work on any of my Motos. I got it from a friend who had it working on e398, but it will only show 'file corrupted' on my e398/E1/V3 -- but I have not tried the 'melody' transfer. I have tried changing bitrates, modifying with audacity, changing file types, etc. with no luck. You suggestion gives me a new avenue to experiment.

PM me a link to your file and I'll see if I can run it thru some of the software I have here.
