Dash won't connect to Internet when on cable

When I have my Dash connected to my laptop by USB, my Dash cannot connect to the Internet. Why is that? Once I unplug it, it connects fine. It's like ActiveSync doesn't let it connect to the Internet or something.
But, if I use my Dash as a wireless modem with Internet Sharing, at that time it connects to the Internet just fine.
What's the deal?
