VX8300, 2gb micro-SD card, software v.3 = no music...Even Verizon can't figure it out

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I bought a 2gb card, but my phone only had software version 1 (which wouldn't recognize the full capacity of the micro SD card). So I brought it to Verizon to flash upgrade it to v. 3, and not only did I lose mp3 functionality (which is a confirmed loss with the upgrade), but anytime I go to "My Music", the phone would freeze up and I'd have to take the battery out and then put it back in.

Verizon sent me a brand new phone (another LG VX8300) which is already on the latest software version (3) - but now when I go to "My Music," and even when I go to "Sync Music", I get an error that says "No Application." I reinstalled the drivers, bought the verizon music essentials kit, and nothing has worked. Neither windows media player (version 10) nor Vcast music manager can detect my phone even though the drivers are working properly and my computer makes the chime noise to indicate that it knows something's been plugged in.

The real messed up part?

Bitpim sees my phone and I can do anything I need to with this program...Everything works perfectly, except of course, uploading music. Here are my questions:

1) Has anyone found a way to force Bitpim to allow .wma files? Or does it absolutely have to be converted to mp3 - cuz my phone can't use mp3's in "My Music" - only in ringtones.

2) Is there another program besides Bitpim/Windows media player/Vcast music manager, that I could use to get .wma files onto my phone/micro SD card?

3) Is anybody else having this problem with the same phone or is it just my crappy luck again??

Going absolutely nuts here...Any help would be greatly appreciated...Thanks.

Joe

put the mp3's in a folder on the sd card called my_mp3
you need to make this folder yourself.
this is confirmed working on my v3 8300

No, they go in the my_music folder if the phone has firmware version 2 or 3.

Verizon told me that mp3's don't work on the 8300 now in version 3 regardless of how you get them on there (whether you drag them into the "my music" folder or transfer them with the cables). Are you guys confirming that even with the latest software I can still play mp3's??

Actually, I just tried it...I put an mp3 in the my_music folder, and then put the card in the phone...No dice.

Whoever you talked to doesn't know their *** from their elbow then. Yes, mp3 playback works on V03. It's integrated into the MOD player.

Posted by: Joeycalves82

do you use some special method or do you literally just drag and drop?...I dragged and dropped and it's still not coming up - although I have wma's on there too - maybe it can't read mixed modes? Like you can only have one type or something?

Posted by: Joeycalves82

yeah man, just tried it again - this time with just one mp3 file in the my music folder...nothing...it just says "no application." Maybe my phone is just busted. But I spoke to 2 guys and 1 woman from Verizon and they all told me that mp3's do not work with software version 3 - only wma's. (Although wma's aren't working for me at the moment either).

They probably flashed the phone themselves before giving it to you and messed it up somehow. Yes, I'm 1,000% positive that V03 can play mp3 and it handles both mp3 and wma at the same time just fine. Mine does and so does everyone elses here. There is a sticky with a tutorial I wrote on how to upgrade/downgrade/refurbish this phone. It fixes MOD player issues and it's in the Verizon LG forum. There is another thread in that forum about V03 called "new firwmare should I do it" or something to that effect. You should check both out.

cool man, that sounds great...I'm sorry, I'm actually rather new to these forums - would you mind giving me the links for these articles please?

I have to disagree here. I am looking at my V03 8300 and if i put mp3's in my_music folder(which i did when I first got the phone) I get a no music files error when i launch the MOD player.
After making a my_mp3 folder and putting the files in there, it now plays mp3's for me.
I dont know if they are changing things, but this is a brand new phone as of 12/20/06. as usual everyones mileage may vary

Sounds like you don't have Version 3 software on that phone.

ONE MORE TIME FOR THE SLOW PEOPLE...

WITH VERSION 3 SOFTWARE, THE 8300 HAS A MUSIC PLAYER THAT IS ABLE TO PLAY BOTH WMA AND MP3 FILES. ALL MUSIC FILES SHOULD BE PLACED IN THE MY_MUSIC FOLDER. THE FRONT CONTROLS LAUNCH THE MUSIC PLAYER OR IT CAN BE STARTED FROM THE GET-IT-NOW MENU.

If your phone isn't working properly it is because it either wasn't upgraded correctly or is malfunctioning.

ahh, so we resort to YELLING and name calling.
I am very much not slow, and I definitley have V03 software on my phone.
So whether any of you "experts" believe me or not, my phone which was purchased brand new with V03 and never upgraded will not play mp3's in the my_music folder. only when i placed them in the my_mp3 folder which I had to create did it begin playing mp3's.
So if you don't believe me then don't respond to me, as my phone does play mp3's and I was just sharing my experience in the hopes that it will help the OP..who is experiencing the same thing as I was before I found my solution.

Something's wrong with your phone then. It's been known since V02 leaked that Verizon disabled access to the hidden player and mp3 playback is facilitated through the MOD player using the my_music directory on the card.

MOD player yes, my_music directory no...if the fact that this is how my phone works means that something is wrong with it...then i'll take it, because my phone with something wrong with it plays mp3's and playlists through the MOD player. which is exactly what I wanted, and Im sure others who are desperatley trying to acheive this would like the same. thats the only reason I shared.

sorry if this doesnt agree with you folks.

Thanks rviccaro, I couldn't get my MP3's to play either untill I made the my_mp3 folder. Works fine now! I just got my phone today. Now I just need to figure out the ringtones.

Hi Everyone. I need some help. My wife just upgraded to the Lg8300 (v03) and I am having problem playing mp3's. On the memory card, I have placed some mp3's in the my_music folder (also tried my_mp3 folder). When I pressed the 'play' button on the outside, I get the message "Player Error". When I flip the phone open, the message is 'Music is not available'.

I have gone to the backdoor menu > Music Setting. When I select this, I get 'Not Available'. I can see the mp3's when looking through the Settings & Tools > Memory > Card Memory > My Music.

What am I doing wrong? Please help.

Thanks in advance.

i believe it is quite obvious only the chocolate(vx8500)+ supports 2 gb memory cards. you need a 1 gb mem. card

You fully have the right to ask what changes and upgrades you will receive with the new software upgrade. Just ask the guy at the desk and he/she will tell you. if they say they can't, hit them over the head and beat them up for being beepholes to you.

hey i have an 8300 and at first didn't know how to put MP3's on either but looked through some of these forums (Realy Helped Alot) and was able to i at first was using Bitpim 0.9.15 and Bluetooth (way too Slow Took about 2 hours to download 1 5Min Song) but worked, i first had to Format card and then it made some folders and then i was able to copy them into the correct folders i got tired of waiting 2 hours so bought Verizon's VCAST Music Essentials Kit ($40.00) and downloaded the USB Drivers And Worked (now 1 Song Takes About 1 Hour) Still too slow i say screw it and buy a card reader i now can upload like 500 % faster, 85 songs took 5 min so i can confirm you can put songs on Phone unless the Verizon store locked it but i bought the phone with VO3 already installed on December 31, 2006 and it works obviously they didn't block mine and why would they block MP3's if the Front Panel has buttons for music Playback Pointless right but anyway you don't have to go through the "secret menu" The Vo3 comes ready you just need a Memory Card i got the 2Gig and it workes fine it shows available mem and used mem fine no -#'s so its good all my songs play fine!
