Just got xv6700- some problems

I recently purchased the Verizon version of the xv6700, and am generally pleased with it, but am having some problems..

1) Many times I hold down the power button to turn the backlight on, but nothing happens. I then eject the SD card, and the backlight comes on normally, is this common, or a bug with my phone?

2) Pocket IE crashes like every 3rd time I open it, any idea why?

3) Last night my phone basically crashed. I set an alarm on it which did not go off and I did not receive any calls. Once I woke up (late) my phone would not turn on, I popped out the SD card and it still would not come back. I had to do a soft reset and it came back on. It still had half battery so i know it didnt just run out.

4) I am receiving 2 duplicate text messages in my inbox intermittantly. And occaisonally the message will go to my old, deactivated phone, which seems very weird to me. I pay for txt's by the message so I'm concerned that I'm being charged double when that happens.

And overall my 6700 has just seemed very slow and laggy. And I guess my main question is, is anyone aware of any fixes for these problems. Or does it look like my phone is a dud? Or is this just the kind of product the 6700 is?

Sounds like the Dark Screen Of Death ("DSOD"), a problem every Windows Mobile device has, and a problem you can learn to mitigate. It has frustrated most of us at one point but we've learned how to remove it from our lives.

Probably what's happening:

You've installed software to the miniSD card that shouldn't have been. Don't install Today plugins, always-on apps, or data for either on a storage card. Why? Because the storage card becomes "unavailable" to the device when it goes into standby mode ("power off") and possibly for a small time after the device comes out of standby. This causes the lockups that you see. Because of this, you reset the phone more often, which creates even more problems. Why? Because the phone isn't meant to be reset or have its battery removed, as it uses (slow) flash memory for storage and thus writes can be delayed. If you dismiss a notification and reset shortly after then you may get the notification popup again. Don't reset unless absolutely necessary. I reset once or twice a week, at most, and sometimes go weeks without.

There is an EXE compressor (UPX) linked to in my signature. Using this, you can fit more programs into your Main Memory.

You've probably also installed a ton of software, like the rest of us have, after shortly getting your device. There are quite a few programs out there that don't behave very well. For example, Windows Mobile notifies software of system conditions, such as memory or battery shortage, which programs are supposed to responsibly respond to. If they don't then they will start to cause problems for other programs. So I recommend that you do your first hard reset -- like formatting your pc -- to start fresh, this time only installing stuff that you've found to behave well.

Also...learn to wait a second or two after pressing the power button. Pressing quickly over and over will just cause frustrations with the backlight.

Your problem with IE will go away after you clear IE's cache, terminate IE (using Start->Settings->System->Memory->Running Programs), clear up some Main Memory, and restart it. If it still crashes on start then quickly hit Stop right before the crash and surf to a WAP site such as http://mobile.courant.com then try a real site again.

Hope this helps

Thanks Andy for the response. This is my first smart phone/PPC so I guess I was blaming the 6700 for general problems that were windowCE or SD related.

I am happy to hear that many of the problems I've encountered are preventable.
