All about GPS and the Treo 700p

I was with Verizon, using LG's VX 8300 and VZNavigator.

Switched to Sprint

Now I have the Treo 700p "with GPS". But learning that it's not a GPS system that you can use out of the box like VZNavigator, is this correct?

In order to get it to work, to my understanding, is you have to buy a BT GPS receiver (somewhere less than $100 price range) AND pay $9.99 a month for a service?

What does everyone use for maps, GPS, etc.
I'm thinking saving all that money and just using Google Maps (however, internet is required, then, agh)...any other ideas/free programs/cheaper ways to go about?

I as well would appreciate some more info on the 700p GPS. It was my impression that all I needed to do was activate the service with sprint and the internal gps would take care of business...?

That's what I was hoping for as well...My old VX 8300 does that with Verizon's Navigator, you're paying $9.99 a mont though, worth it to me. I'm sure there is some way to make the internal GPS work fully functional with a program like VZ Navigator

Yes, that is what I am thinking as well...I'm sure it can be done..i mean, it IS GPS...it CAN get your exact location...it SHOULD be able to do this!

No, it can't be done. The cheapo GPS built into most phones isn't usable for a navigation device; they're manufactured without the hardware and firmware necessary for using them as navigational tool.

I know many other would agree with you, but this just doesn't make sense to me...emergency services can find your exact location, hence, the phone has GPS locator/tracking...well, take that value and put it into google maps, or another program, and vwala, it's done

It doesn't make sense to me either; there's really no reason for them to do this. But they do. And that's the way it is. By the way, it's "viola" :-)

That just sounds like a viola, a bigger violin, haha
