About a year ago I had two guys come in... they thought they were pretty slick with their bt headset's.....besides the point. They drop a black box on the counter, and say they want to activate it as an "add a line." Im thinking to myself, "what the hell is this piece." I was in a curious mood so i went on to investigate. First impression, no freakin way am i gonna be able to activate this thing.

The black box turns out to be a tracking device. an expensive one too.
I find out theyre bounty hunters with a 10,000 dollar hunt ensuing. So i make a few phonecalls to the manufacturer to see if what they were requesing was at all possible. I add a line, do the credit check, throw it on a one year plan with 3000 text, and agree to the ivr on my phone. Pop the sim card in and were good to go.

Yeah, im as surprised as you. The manufacturer of the device said it can be used on any gsm network. I assume i did the activation correctly and it was succesful, plus i havent heard from the guys.

Has this happened to anyone??

Well, for a minute there i thought i was special.

interesting though.......... thats probably the craziest thing i had to activate. Any other peculiar activations???

It's possibly just some kind of modem that works wirelessly over Cingular's GPRS network using sim cards. I deal with them all the time, however usually sim's are ordered over phone and shipped to their location; bringing the device to the store is a funny thought :-p

what'd you do for the imei?

Posted by: genetru

As KikoKazuma says, trackers and data loggers are quite common but they're usually business customers and don't deal directly with stores.

The tracking device had an IMEI/serial number on it somewhere. It matched the standard 15 digit and even printed out showing the device name and model at the end of the activation.

Then what device was it?

There are actually quite a few of these types of devices, they are used to validate things like container's, pipelines and such. There is even a page on Cingulars site(can't remember where) about their use.

In the UK they use them along with RFID to let beer go through customs without opening the truck and ruining the beer!

Drug distributors(legal ones ) and a lot of transport companies use them to track position. They are usually sold through Business(VAR) channels though.

Once I had two well dressed customers come in.

Both were in suits and stood up straight as if they had just gotten out of Marine Corp Bootcamp. Anyway, they both had a side bag as well as a backpack on wheels.

They asked for several pda's and I kindly showed all the ones we had then... I also demoed them the 8125 for about an hour.

They finally said, "We'll be back... Thank you young man."

These guys were mysterious though, it didn't freak me out but it left me wondering. They comeback fiteen minutes later and get two of the 8125's with all of the accessories, aswell as the pda unl connect and the 3000 text messaging package. The wierdest thing was that instead of putting it on a family plan they each put it on an indivdual account. Each one on the 2000 Cingular Nation plan.

I'm not gonna lie nor deny it... it was a fat comm for a three hour period of work.

... As they were leaving they had wierd government id's... I'd never seen before and I've seen many....hahaha

Anyway... they paid in cash... and left. As I'm looking out the window they're car was a new cadillac sts... they were putting their bags in their cars backseats... putting their jackets on their hangars........

Then I seen em... they each had two sidearms in their brown leather straps... Okay okay.... I'm very descriptive...but only so you all can picture this vividly....that's my wierdest sale I've ever done....

As if I was selling the 8125's to two men in black agents or something....

peace.

A few weeks ago a customer came in and handed me a sidekick looking thing that turned out to be an actual computer with a wireless card built into it. It actually ran windows and had a slide out keyboard. Think of a bigger 8525 with real windows on it. The only thing that was different that instead of a SIM it had an FCCID which is the same thing if you think about it. Added the line and it fired right up.

There are no MIB's, it was just your imagination. Yes, just your imagination, nothing else. You sure they were not part of the illuminate?

Posted by: lowegg

Speaking about imagination...

Why bring up the illuminati?.....

Better watch out...hahahaha......

Posted by: luciferxe

hell we ll know their are black ops. but hey as long as they are not after you then don't ask questions

Posted by: RyanM

Interesting... so why does it need a 3,000 text plan?

No idea why. :cough: to send a text updating where they have been and how far they have driven :cough: Maybe they just wanted to spend some extra money or something? :cough: the data could be for real time tracking. :cough:

They need to add a emote with shifty eyes.

Posted by: impyman

they actually needed an unlimited text plan, but we all know cingular doesnt offer that to regular customers.

3000 was just to cover the bases. plus give me more commission. like i said earlier, i guess it worked out because they have not been back.
