8525 Free Software Repository Build In Progress

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I'm a recent purchaser of Cingular's new 8525 (although i did come close to ordering an unlocked Tytn online, but damn, I couldn't justify the price whatsoever, lol). So like a bunch of you, it was time to start compiling a list of "must have" scripts for my pda. Unfortunately, I had to go to 4 different forums, and two freeware sites to find what I wanted.

So I had a brainiac idea..create a damn one stop file repository (not a wiki) where people could upload and download at will.

http://www.8525software.com was born. Built it in two days lol. Got the phone three days ago

I invite everyone that owns a Tytn or 8525 to contribute or download new programs that could help themselves and everyone. Having a one area repository, in my opinion benefits everyone.

Guest priv's allow for quick upload, but must wait for admin approval. Logged in users can get auto-approval for their uploads.

Looking forward to building up a one stop free software download site

great site, I was thinking of doing something like this just so i can keep tabs of the softwares that I have on my 8525 that I find essential for my use (for the least). It depends on different people but I know I have a good 15+ softwares that I find useful on my device. I will contribute once I get back home.

Thanks for the words of encouragement, much appreciated. I was a regular treo 650 user for awhile, so the palmsoft world is not unknown to me..wm50? Yea, it's a whole new world lol. So I figured it'd be a great idea just to have a consolidated repository of confirmed files that work on the 8525 and let the users build the database..i'll just put the pieces into motion and the groundwork laid.

jeeplaw, good idea but I would be concerned over people uploading trojan horses

how do you plan to prevent people from uploading malicious apps?

Posted by: nepali

Wirelessly posted (nepali's 8525: HTC-8500/1.2 Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 5.5; Windows CE; PPC; 240x320))

Sounds great!!!

Good quesiton regarding the malcious app situation. So far, I've tested each program on my own 8525, and am counting on the users of the same device to upload programs that have been beneficial to them. I'm looking into an online scanner for uploaded files to the db, so we'll see how that goes. But i'm looking for more help in the upload department

Great site. It is now bookmarked for my daily checkup. I just hope that it will create a lot of traffic and overload it with files.

Great site, thanks! You might insist on a user name, thumbnail and/or link to the original site for any uploads...

Posted by: jeeplaw

right now the site is setup to take uploads and allow downloads for visitors and users. I can definately change that if it needs to be changed.

What I want to put in next, after I upload some apps, is a request area for people looking for free programs of a certain type.

jeeplaw,

Thanks for your effort on this. May I make a suggestion? Is there a way to have feedback postings from people that have tried one of the downloads? That way, people can read reviews before downloading and also know if something caused some mischief with their phone.

Thanks and keep up the good work.
