Apple Iphone. What type of new customer incentives?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I have US Cellular right now, but the Iphone would put my mp3 player, dell axim, and mobile phone into one device!

500-600 USD. what type of new customer incentives does cingular usually offer?

That price is the incentive. If you go without a contract, expect to pay more. Apple and Cingular just haven't announced how much more yet. That is what I am waiting for.

phone wont be sold without the contract.

The incentives of signing a 2 year contract are $499 for 4GB and $599 for 8GB. Isn't that good enough for you?

I would imagine that it has to be available without a contract. Only reason I say that is their current Cingular clients who are already in a 2 year contract will want to upgrade to the phone. I have been dinged so many times for upgrading when I'm still in a contract that I had to pay full pop for the phone which is more than the price they offer with their 2 year contract deal. If you look at Cingular's site they have the full pop price listed and then a 2 year contract price listed. Because of gadget freaks, that's how they make a lot of their money.

Ebay will be your friend. But I expect the price of the 8GB to be around $800-$900. The first week or two expect them to sell above $1000. I kid you not.

500-600 with a 2 year contract and they can keep it. Flash memory for it's 4-8gb hard drive is not that expensive and it won't run all the software of a mac or a ppc.

To the OP Cingular already has several devices that put an axim, MP3 player, and phone in one device, The 8125,8525, Treo 750, blackjack, E62, Pearl, Nokia Communicator. All those devices can do that. Not to mention, the Iphone is not a smart phone so take out the dell axim part.

so basically everyone is saying buy one get the second full price.

I would be reluctant to call this an "upgrade". More like a crossover move. Being this will be OSX based, a PPC or SM user will be giving up some functionality or features by moving to this phone. It's certainly not a device meant to capture the Corporate crowd.

I would venture to guess that it's directed at the teenage/20 something/purely personal use crowd. Large Corporate IT account people won't be going near this thing.

Don't get me wrong, it's got some neat features and certainly has that Steve Jobs design stamp, but after the ga-ga factor wears off and you start objectively comparing it, you realize it's a compromise just like every other cellphone on the market.

I was under the impression it was a full functioning Apple pda as well. Oh well that is ok

It is. And if you're in the market for third party apps for your phone, how many do you find available for that phone versus WM5? What about my email needs in syncing with Exchange server?

See the sort of problems that arise right away?

Again, the wow factor has to run its course before people start asking the tough questions.

I believe I read somewhere that part of the deal of Cingular getting this device is that they will not be allowed to subsidize the cost of the phone. I believe this is a move on Apple's part to ensure consistent pricing across different sales avenues. That being the case, the price you see is the price it will be. Ebay not withstanding.

My Cingular guy says that it will be cheaper going through Cingular than through Apple. Perhaps Cingular eats the difference with Apple? The other retread behind the counter said it was going to be like PS3 and Xbox360, I laughed at him.

Anyone noticed the lack of 3G data connection from iPhone? It's an Edge/GPRS only device. That, and the vitually non-existent 3rd party applications. Why anyone want to spent $500 to $600 for one is beyond me.

Can you honestly say at $120k Range Rover is better than a $30k SUV? Price is really not much of a motivator anymore.

Amen.

I have been arguing with a guy at work all week about how amazing 3G is.

His argument is always something like, "Why do you need 3G when it has Wifi and hotspots are everywhere nowadays?"

... moron.

On a bus? A train? Work (assuming no wifi hotspot)? Walking downtown and wanting to download an email attachment?

Use your imagination.

3G IS the freaking data standard if you're with Cingular. Why settle for ANYTHING less if you're buying a new phone?

Apple, if you're going to "revolutionize the phone market" then at LEAST adopt the newest technology.

Ugh, this just annoys me to no end.

I'm PRAYING that they will somehow get 3G on this badboy before June.

I guess I'm kind of ranting, but damnit all to hell... 3G is KICKASS, and it's AVAILABLE NOW, so WHY NOT?

3G is useful for the Laptop Connects but most smartphones will be fine with EDGE. Of course it sucks that they will still have to probably pay $30-$40 a month for data services on the iPhone.
