Blackjack OpenDNS problem

I think I got OpenDNS working when I go to welcome.opendns.org I get a orange checkmark
but now when I try to pull up certain sites they aren't coming up and I don't understand why

like when I pull up imdb.com
the page says opening then loading and gets to around 58KB and then nothing happens

is this an opendns.org issue?

you might try a search on this forum. there are several threads on this.

I switched my home computers over to OpenDNS for about 30 mins. I had to change back to my normal DNS for exactly the issues you are describing. Seems that OpenDNS is trying to "protect" us anytime a URL redirects the request to another site. While good in theory, there are a lot of legitimate sites that do this regularly. Forums are a good example. Many forums purchase a domain name that is unique. Then they redirect any requests to that domain to a forum farm like exboard or spreebb. OpenDNS blocks those types of refirect. It would not let me go to BlackjackSmartzone.com at all. It also had a heck of a time with my VPN.

I didn't find the DNS service to be all that much faster than the ones supplied by Cingular. I deleted all the OpenDNS modifications and went back to standard settings.

TorontoNC, if a page starts loading, then the DNS portion of the process is long finished. OpenDNS simply translates the domain requested into the IP address of the webserver. We do it faster, and with additional intelligence, but there is nothing at all to do with the website itself. The experience you describe, where a page starts to load, and then stops/hangs, is either a website issue or a connectivy issue with the carrier.

dbltap, your description of what OpenDNS does is not accurate. I'm not sure what you are seeing, but OpenDNS does not block redirects or new sites at all. We do block known phishing sites, but you can even turn that off, if you want to, with a free account (which gives you more control over your DNS preferences).

Redirects happen at webservers, not in DNS, although CNAMEs are similar in some regard...OpenDNS follows the standards with CNAMEs, too.

You can see what's in the OpenDNS cache with CacheCheck http://cache.opendns.com/ and refresh it as necessary.

We want to know about where OpenDNS can improve, but I'd like to make sure people understand what OpenDNS does, and what it does not do.

Cheers,

John Roberts

ok well what else could be causing the problem why would imdb.com get to 56k and then just stay at the loading prompt?

something not related to the DNS issue i would assume. like opendns said, once the page is starting to open, DNS has done it's job since you got to the site already.

are their any kind of network programs that I could download that would help me find out what the problem is

when i have a connectivity problem with a wm5 device that i cant figure out i reboot the machine. this usually fixes the problem for me, whether it is not syncing with the email server or not being able to connect to web pages.

if you screwed around with a bunch of settings you might even want to try a hard reset and just start over.

I restart my phone every evening
I turn it off when I go to sleep to save the battery

I really don't want to do a hard reset if I don't have to
the only registry stuff I changed was the dns stuff
