Question about Blackjack 3G/EDGE Services

Is the following behavior normal: I always have decent signal strength (3-4 bars) with never any dropped calls or dropped data service and according to the latest coverage map I have 3G service in this area. My BJ always boots up with 3G indicated but after a period of a few minutes goes to an EDGE indication. While in the 3G I get about 750kb/s and about 200kb/s in EDGE. With signal strength this good shouldn't the 3G hold in all the time? Do I perhaps have a faulty device? If I were on the fringe of 3G would I get this kind of behavior?

Thanks for any info,

Frank

it changes by itself although you can force it to stay on utms/hsdpa.

Yes, In fact I just did the *#1546792# to change the Network Order setting to WDCMA first and it seems to be holding in 3G a lot better. I was just wondering if changing on the BJ and never coming back was a common thing. I know on the Q and 700P on VZ that once one goes to EVDO it doesn't go back to 1X until you leave the EVDO service area. Just seemed strange to me that the BJ flipped around so much.

Thanks for the response,

The latest on this is that after booting there is the 3G indicator but data rates are very slow - about 60 to 80kb/s - and connections seem to take forever to be established and perhaps 30% of the time fail altogether. Then after a few minutes the indicator goes to E and after another few minutes connections are quickly established with data rates 100 - 200 kb/s. I never go back to 3G unless I reboot. So I ask again the questions posed above. Anybody else see this kind of behavior - especially those in fringe 3G areas? Might I have a hardware problem and should I try another BJ? Mine is Hardware Rev 0 - anybody have a later revision? The coverage maps show that I am in a "Good" area and competely surrounded by at least two miles of 3G service but I have no way to check this extent of 3G coverage. Beginning to think the 3G coverage map is wrong and I am really on the fringe of 3G.
