Buy Blackjack now or wait for iPhone?

What a dilemma. I just sent my TyTN off to the UK for repairs. I don't expect it back for a month and a half.
I started using my backup W810i but found that I really need a Smartphone/PPC.
I'm all over iPhone when it comes out but in the meantime, I might get a BlackJack. Problem is I would have to pay full price for the BJ in order to get the iPhone for the 2 yr contract price.
Any thought on this?

the iphone sux in my opinion. an all touch-screen device? no thanks. i can barely stand the windows touch-screen devices. no micro sd slots or anything (granted you have gigabyets of space, but still-- you will run out if u like music that much to pay for a device like this).

one thing that's nice is the free push e-mail by yahoo. other than that, no way in hades i would ever get an iphone.

don't wait 6 months on a phone--buy one now, take care of it, then sell it on ebay.

The iPhone isn't really a smartphone either, you won't be able to install any 3rd party software on it, it's not gonna support push email of any kinda AFAIK, maybe some 'service' based services like Yahoo Go or something, but not anything like push email from your company or anything.

It's just a consumer based device that plays music/video and doubles as a phone...it's not anywhere close to the capability of a blackjack, your TyTN, or a BlackBerry.

If you really need a smartphone, by the common definition of a smartphone, the iPhone is not it.

Supposedly the iPhone will support OSX widgits and I do suspect that Apple will be working on add-ons and 3rd party projects for it.

For initial release though think about these things;

No outlook sync
No 3G
No push email
Difficult text entry
No 3G
No 3G

I would expect that certain things will be slow/buggy on the initial release too.

In other words, it won't be for business users.

err... did anyone mention
BJ $200 w/ contract
iPhone $500-600 w/contract

does that make any difference to you ?

Plus like the above poster said
3G 3G 3G 3G 3G ...........

I have a feeling that they held off on 3G primarily because if it had 3G battery life would really really suck.

Exactly my thoughts. The iPhone will not be for a business user. Without mail sync to Exchange, Goodmail, etc, No 3G, and many others, I'm sure it will only be a hit with the highschool/college crowd. It will do well with this group, but not business users.

So really it depends on what you need it for.

Well, it's going to do very well with anyone aged 15-49 who wants to look "cool" or who wants to carry one device instead of carrying their ipod + their phone around.

This will include housewives, students, the guy that works at the 7-11, etc.

People who really use their phones for business make up a small part of the market. For every blackberry/blackjack user out there are 20 people with a "normal" phone.

Like I said, the biggest entry barrier is the price, but since Americans have no problem spending more than they make that shouldn't be a huge problem either.

A small part...maybe, but a very important and very profitable one. Large corporations will standardize on say...Treo 750's and buy a couple hundred or more and give them out to the mobile sales force, etc. Each one of those go with pretty hefty voice and data plans too...

I for one am changing from my initial "gotta have it" on the iPhone to "well...I don't know...maybe when version 2.0 of it comes out" to "Umm...I think I'll just get a Treo 750 after they ship with the HSDPA and the bugs are worked out".

The typical Apple closed environment and the inability to just go to Handango, etc. to get little apps for it will make this a consumer/prosumer device only. People who live and die by email and their ability to create/revise documents on their mobiles will pass this thing up, regardless of all the cool flashy graphics.

In the end, it's a EDGE-only device, with limited app support and non-removable battery, it will proabably scratch easily, people will get mad at Cingular because they can't get insurance on a $600 phone and unfortunately, I think this thing will drag Cingular down...too bad really, it's the coolest looking UI out there.

So to answer your question: get what you need now...get the Blackjack.
