What's the BEST camera phone (any brand)? Suggestions?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: cheapa55

I am currently using a T-Mobile MDA and I am tired of having to reset the darn thing. It's not reliable for me.

I mainly want a phone with a great camera. I use a DSLR and I need a camera to carry around and a good phone camera will do the trick for now.

Other things I use my phone for: calls, quick weather check and sports score. so basically I think most phones will do the functions I want except for the great camera.

Any suggestions on which one is the BEST camera phone?

thanks.

sony ericsson k790/800 or nokia n80

Posted by: cheapa55

Thanks dizzle!

do you know of any links with photos taken by those cameras?

from what I understand K790 is for use in the US? vs K800 for europe?

what's the best place to get these without a contract?

edit: by the way, I would prefer a phone with EDGE since I use it wirelessly/bluetooth to my laptop to get online.

Although it's not specifically for those two phones, this camera comparison featuring the K800, D900, and N73 is worth a look.

I'm guessing you actually meant N73, not N80

Posted by: cheapa55

Thanks for the link, but it's hard for me to compare, which one seems better out of those? It seemed the N73 had pretty decent pictures. how does the quality compare to the N80? is it the same camera in the phone?

Posted by: mrochester

N80 camera is much much worse than the N73. N80 isn't even auto-focus!

Posted by: ace587

hmm nobody never mentioned the 903SH, beats any other 3 MP phone in daylight pics, k790/k800 wins in night pics

Posted by: Ken Wind

Going by what I've read the K800/K790a has the better flash, so it takes better pictures in low light. I don't know about macro mode or manual settings though. They're pretty close in quality from what I understand, and a lot of people that chose between the two made their decision based on the UI, not the camera.

The N73 runs s60v3, and it is a smartphone. The K800/K790a doesn't have smartphone capabilities, but the Sony Ericsson UI is easy to use and well designed.

Thanks for the replies, but are these 3 all "auto-focus"? All the sample pictures from the link seemed blurry to me. am I just used to clear pictures from "real" digicams? or is it because the pictures are so blown up on the website that I see it blurred and pixelated?

The last time I used a nokia was 7 yrs ago and a lot has changed and I'm not familiar with S60/smartphone. what can I do with it? is it like a WM5 in my MDA?

Posted by: ace587

k790/k800 has a xenon flash which is an advantage and has BestPic

where can I get more info on the 903sh? will it work in the US? I need a US phone that will work on T-Mobile in CA

if anyone has any websites that sells unlocked phones, please PM me if it's against the rules to post them. Thanks in advance.

Posted by: ace587

903sh has 1900mhz, it should work fine with tmobile, as for websites that sell unlocked phones, check the advertising forum, its against to rules how unlock a phone, but getting an unlocked phone is different. As for the 903sh, its exotic and only a few are circulating in the US, youre lucky if you can get a 903sh for 400 it can go high up to 600 even its from 2005, yes, it rapes the N93 big time.

Posted by: cheapa55

Wow! I saw some pictures taken by the sharp 903sh and they are pretty darn good!

PBase Member Photos with 903SH

now where can I buy this?

Posted by: raj2k

for night time pictures K800i/K790a wins, indoor pics N73(with light), and in daylight Samsung D900.

Anyone know how well the Motorola Krzr 2.0 mP camera works?

Is the Lalawest.com ad on HoFo well known or trustworthy?

Thanks.

903 is in the UK, 903sh is from Japan

Posted by: cheapa55

So is 903SH the one that will work in the US? darn, I was just in Japan, if I'd known it was so hard to get, I'd try getting it when I was there. oh well.

903/903sh, both work here, same phone different markets

You should browse around gsmarena.com a bit more to help you make your decision. I've heard great things about the 903's camera as well, but you have to keep in mind that it's still pretty basic in terms of a phone. Something running s60 (N73 probably for you) will serve as more than just a camera phone down the line. As someone else said, it is a smartphone, similar to Windows Mobile, only in that they both support 3rd party applications. In every other aspect of a smartphone however, s60 is much much easier to use and still holds more than half of the smartphone market.

903sh is a multimedia powerhouse with a ASV QVGA screen, and excellent video recording, agree if hes looking for a more smartphone type, N73 and N93 fits the profile

Posted by: JonnyBruha

What are the specs on the 903's video recording? I'm looking at QVGA on gsmarena.com, but that's not nearly enough information.

I'd argue that the N73 has awesome video recording too (at QVGA 15fps), but the more recent videos I've taken with mine came out absolutely horrible in decent lighting. I suspect its my firmware, though.

Edit: Things like lack of EDGE, battery life, and perhaps the 850 band depending on which model is making it lose some points in my book.

You mean, the 903? lacks edge, and 850? Thanks, bc that's not good for me either if it lacks that.

Posted by: cheapa55

Thanks Jonny for the link, it helped a lot but it brought a new question to mind.

I read the N73's alarm clock is not repeatable. I use my cell phone alarm as my wake up alarm. Since it's a smartphone, can I download a alarm program for free?

Posted by: tran2000

in daylight pictures the samsung p850 is probably one of the best, it'll beat the k800 and d900. but it's simply a camera phone, so if you wanted a smart phone then go with the n93 or n73. if you really wanted a camera phone you should look into the i-mobile 902, 5 megapixel camera made by sony with xenon flash. i've seen the pictures and they put some regular digital cameras to shame.

i-mobile 902 seems to be the champ right now
