Weird External Display Problem- i860

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I purchased an i860 on EBay. My problem is that the external color display does not work. By not work, I mean the display lights up black. No time, date or anything is displayed. When a call comes in, it lights up black, if that makes any sense. Is this a software issue or just a defective phone?

I had that problem with mine. I dropped my phone and it causes a small hairline crack on the screen now its just black.

no visable cracks- I'm just very frustrated that the phone is in good shape and I just don't know where to turn.

A bad ribbon cable could also cause that problem I believe.

do where do I go from here?

Are you comfortable taking your phone apart?

Posted by: diggerman723

completely. But I don't have the tools to do it. How much would Nextel charge to replace the ribbon. I have a Nextel service center nearby.

Assuming it is the ribbon (you haven't established that yet), I dont know if Nextel does those kind of repairs? Im in Canada, but I doubt they would do it. And to the best of my knowledge the external screen comes with the ribbon attached. So either way if it is a physical issue and not software thats probably what your going to have to do.

ok- how do I tell if it's a software issue or a physical issue?

Mostly Physical

But taking apart the flip in an i860 is a *****

To Open our phone go to a local hardware store and Get A Torx t6 and Torx T3

to usedto take out flip spring the i used hex keys (Metric keys)

If im wrong correct me

let me clarify- the external display works- by works I mean it lights up- but that is it. the time, date, signal strength and incoming calls do not register. it is just black. maybe a loose connector? I don't understand how it can light up but not display anything? if anyone can help me, I'd appreciate it.

When I cracked my screen the backlight worked as well, but the screen was just black. It could be a loose connector, but I would doubt it.

Update- I brought it to a Nextel service center in town. He swapped out the flip piece for me for $35. I am happy as a clam...

Thanks.
