help with treo 750 windows media streaming (perhaps a hidden/forced proxy like IE?)

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

i got a treo 750 yesterday and i can't get the stream at

http://somafm.com/gs.wml

to work on it.

i'm a cingy orange with PDa Unlimited plan. at the link
above you will get a two line web page with another
link named Groove Salad that when clicked, brings up
the media player and plays the stream from
rtsp://64.202.98.91:554/gs.sdp

when i do this my 2G nokia 9300, the realplayer comes
up and the stream starts up perfectly. on the 3G treo 750,
the windows media player comes up and says connecting...
but then bombs out with "failed to find network" or
"can't connect". i have tried using both the Media Net
and My ISP settings in the Connections Manager, but
the result is the same: no cigar.

can anyone else get the above or any of the other
streams at http://somafm.com to work on a 3G
treo 750 or have any ideas or suggestions on how
to get the treo 750 to stream this? (i smell/have a
hunch that perhaps windows media on the treo 750 will
only stream cingy approved things through their proxy
and not The Internet at Large? i am able to get
stuff from the treo 750's ie built in favorties list at
http://windowsmedia.com to stream/play ok -- just
not any of the somafm.com streams.

(btw, if you go the http://somafm.com web page from the
treo ie browser you get a mobile-stream only selection with
different speed options, but none of them work on the
treo 750. i don't see this mobile-stream only selection for
example on the nokia 9300 browser -- what come up on
the nokia 9300 is identical to what i see on my laptop.)

thanks in advance for any help -- i've searched high and
low but have not seen this issue reported here/elsewhere.

Well I think the first problem is that this stream appears to be a Real Player stream and won't workin Windows Media Player.
When I open that "rtsp://64.202.98.91:554/gs.sdp" in Windows Media player on my PC, it says it's not a supported stream. When I open it in RealOne player on my PC it plays an audio stream.
It's "AAC 48kbps" and I don't think Windows Media player plays AAC.

So I tried this on the Real One player on the Treo 750 and it doesn't support that stream (Info on getting the Real player here: http://www.gadgetech.info/treo/hacks/cingularvideo/ ) . I think the WM version of Real player doesn't do AAC either.
I'm inclined to believe that this has nothing to do with Cingular's internet connection and/or restriction of straming. And it's not the fault of any proxy setting in windows media player. By the way I did just dig through the registry again and found no evidence of this kind of setting for Windows Media player.
Rather the fact that it's AAC and WM doesn't support it, nor does Real Player. Even TCPMP which might support it doesn't support RTSP. Doh.

Perhaps the new Core Player http://www.corecodec.com/ MIGHT be able to do this, but the 1.0 version doesn't seem to work on the Treo 750.

So I have to say I'm out of ideas on how to get this to work.

By the way, that's some trippy music!

indeed it is

thanks much-o -- you've saved me a ton of hair pulling in trying
to get this figured out/debugged (im new to the wm & treo worlds).

so Most Sadly, it looks like NO 3gpp (aac+) capable player
presently exists for wm (yet).... it's interesting that the
realplayer that plays the gs 3gpp stream on the symbian os
based nokia 9300 must have the 3gpp & aac+ codec magic(s)
in it, while the realplayer as it currently exists for wm dose NOT...
nor dose the windows media (or any) player ... hence, i'm out
of luck for now for streaming somafm.com streams on the 3g
umts treo it seems & will have to Make Do on the 2g gsm 9300 .
what a truly messy & confusing "state" the present mobile
based streaming situation is -- one really has No Idea
if a given stream is supported/supposed/going to work or not!?!?
(i had spent over an hour on the phone with cingy internet
data 2nd tier support this afternoon before being passed off
to palm support in the 813 area code where my call got
dumped/dropped after being on music on hold for at least
a half hour or so with them... ).

thanks again for your help -- esp. going The Extra Mile and
digging around in the registery (just in case) and for trying
it with the wm realplayer -- that was gonna be my next
"headache" -- you saved me The Disappointment.

btw, these (aac formatted) stream are not Real Player streams,
but http://orban.com/products/streaming/opticodec-pc1010/
formatted streams. the 3gpp form of aac is a Low-overhead
MPEG-4 Audio Transport Multiplex (LATM) mechanism that
manages the sequences of audio data with relatively small
overhead (see http://rfc.net/rfc3016.html for more details)
that is ideal for mobile bandwidth environments.

i'm happy to report that i found a wma 32kbs stream link on somafm.com's website that works on my treo 750 with windows media at:

rtsp://somafm-trans.streamguys.com/GrooveSalad

the irony is you can only see this link from a non-treo 750 IE browser -- when browsing the somafm.com website from the treo 750 you only will see a stripped down version of their website that only shows the aac+/3ggp links -- none of which work on the treo 750. but, if you browse from your laptop (or in my case the nokia 9300), you will see The Full Version of the somafm website that includes a "Windows Media WMA" Groove Salad link -- which contains the above sub-link in it. so, if you type the above rtsp URL string into the "Open Url" (go to the Windows Media Library, then tap Menu-->Open URL) you should get groove salad streaming.

That is ironic.
There is a way to force The Treo's WM5 IE browser to NOT download these mobile sites, but instead to act like a real desktop web browser.

HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/InternetSettings/
AcceptHeader = ......(bunch of stuff)

Remove any references to "WML" from that line.

Now when you visit a web site it'll always load as a real web site and not load the 'wml' (or mobile) version of that site.

But it's ironic that the stripped down mobile site doesn't have the windows media stream on it.

You could also use a 'desktop style' browser like opera mini to go to the site, and in some cases when you go to click a stream link like that opera mini is smart enough to pass the URL off to Intnerenet explorer which in turn would launch WM player. But getting opera mini to run on a Treo 750 requires installing Java. And finding Java for the Treo 750 is a whole other covnersation. I finally found java and I'll have to share that with the rest of the world soon.

Dude! I think I just figured out somethings (well, finally noticed it that is.)
On Somafm.com, the link way at the top "listen now"...
On that page:

"PocketPC and WindowsMobile devices: Resco radio player now supports aacPlus streams on your Pocket PC device. You'll get excellent audio quality and reliable streaming on most major wireless networks!"

I totally forgot about Resco Radio. I think that could be your answer. Try downloading it and see if it works.
