Another customer thread

Hi, I'm a new member and I work at a Cingular retail store. I want to rant about customers, so if you wanna read then go ahead, maybe you can relate to what im ranting about. Tips and suggestions would be helpful.

I can't stand customers who come in and see me at my desk and ask me "Do you work here?" I pause for a second in amazement and say yes. Next time someone asks me, I will say "No, Cingular stores have a new thing where custmers sit behind desks and the agents walk around the store."

I can't stand when they ask me why the phones online are cheaper, I try to match the price, but sometimes it's not possible, and I don't know what to tell them.

An old guy walks in and tells me about an ad on tv he saw and asks me about it. I asked him what the ad said, and all he said was that he saw "something" (didn't tell me if it was a media plan or phone). I told him that unless he can tell me about it, or at least if it was a phone, I could see what I can do. No, the ******* started to insult me, saying that I should know about the ads. I was this close to humiliating him, but I need this job badly. I called customer service and the lady was on my side too. ******* left.

I have idiots who try to return phones and accessories from other retail stores (note that the store I work in is privately owned), and they ask why they can return stuff they buy from Best Buy to other Best Buy, I don't even answer, I just look at them until they leave.

I get paid $5 an hour, plus commission, so go ahead laugh at me.

it might be time for you to find another job...Obviously retail sales isn't for you. Maybe In-N-Out burger?

Posted by: Wonwad

It's not for me, but I'm starting to like it.

Why isn't it for im because some speds come in to his place and instead of thinking for themselves they say and or do something that is dumb. Call a spade a spade dude the people he remarked about are morons, and deserve to be ridiculed shunned by society and forced to wear "Dee dee dee" in red letters so the rest of the population can shun them and kee them out of the gene pool

Posted by: andy4310

Yes, i would highly reccomend getting a new job as well... you arent doing yourself, your company, or Cingular any good.

Posted by: Wonwad

Actually, I sell pretty well, so...

Tell the customer something humorous if you want, but try not to be too sarcastic. If they take offense, they won't buy from you. If you make a joke of it at your own expense, they'll laugh and be more apt to buy.

You can only do so much. Offer your customer service as a piece they can't put a price on that is more than the cost difference of the phone.

Ask him what about the ad interested him and work off what he tells you. It's either a phone he saw or a plan or feature he heard about. If you know your phones/plans/features, you'll figure it out without having seen the ad.

Thanks for not bashing me. ^

Forget these guys. If you sell well, and can handle dealing with the idiots that will come in and out of the store... then stick it out. Customers will be retarted, there is nothing you can do to fix it... but if you can put up with it then your going to be just fine. Blow off steam when you get home, or feel free to have a laugh session with your coworkers after an idiot leaves, it really relieves the tension. Or hell, post here on HoFo, we all do.

but uh.. BTW: 5 isnt crap... stick it out for a few months then apply at corporate, they start at 9 dollars. i wouldnt put up with 1/4 of what i deal with for 5 bucks an hour... hell i dont even think the 10 i get is worth it!!! lol good luck and welcome to hell.... your one of us now.... *scared face*

Posted by: Wonwad

Lol thanks a lot, I plan to ask for a raise this saturday. Wish me luck.

I find it very sad that people are coming in here and bashing someone about what he has dealt with. We all deal with idiots, every day. This guy is just venting it. Just because hes venting doesnt make him any less of a good employee than anyone else. No one can ever love every aspect of their job and if you do, youre a sick, twisted individual who should be shot. And this isnt the first time Ive seen someone say "Youre not good enough to work for Cingular, go flip burgers." And I am personally getting tired of seeing it. This is the 2nd or 3rd topic Ive seen it it when someone comes here to vent about something, no matter how stupid you think it is, that doesnt give anyone the right to bad down to their fellow co-workers.

Like iam said, if you can sell well and youre doing a good job, then keep at it. Dont let some tool on a website tell you that youre ****** because you want to vent.

Just a suggestion, when a customer comes up to you at your desk divert your attention to helping/selling him and not to paperwork. I don't know how many reps spend a lot of time on the net(probably hofo )and ignore leads.

And when a customer asks about an advertisement act interested, that too can lead to sales...it's also the job! He might even appreciate it!

Posted by: Closethesale

your perfect for the job, i love it when other people post in here and try to be your therepist. and if i misspelled that they will tell me i need a knew job.

Posted by: crystus

When they walk up and ask you if you work there you could say Yeah I do, come to think of it they haven't paid me yet its been a few months.

Or after a while you can gauge your cusotmers and tell who you can joke around with and respond with Yes I do, how can i not help you today while you laugh or yes i do how can i confuse you today.

Like a previous poster said a joke can turn a potentially bad situation good. Remember the only thing that can't take away from you is your ability to chose how you react!

Posted by: ivwshane

If someone has to walk up to you and ask if you work there then you aren't greeting them in time and you arent doing your job.

If I walked into a place and asked if you worked here I would be saying it because you aren't doing cr?p and for the most part you would appear to useless.

Posted by: Wonwad

I always say "Hi, welcome to Cingular" if im attending someone, if im alone I say "Hi, how may I help you?" I think its customer stupidity, or at least thats how they usually start to talk with sales agents.

Yesterday, for the millionth time, I had an idiot walk in and ask me if I was T-mobile. It's one thing to ask me where you can find a T-mobile near by, to which if im not busy I will search a T-mobile nearby on Yahoo, but you take it too far when you walk into a Cingular store, full of endless posters and Cingular everywhere, and ask me if im T-mobile.

One lady came in and wanted to activate a line, when I asked for her social security number, she got mad and made a scene about why I need her social security number, I explained to her that it was a credit check and was for security, but she stormed out. Seconds later she comes back and asks me if I took out her information, WEIRDOOOO.

Well seeing as she works for an agent the store may not be big. 10 ft into the store could be the back for all we know. And she could be busy doing other work, cingular U, or who knows what.

I agree. We should be here to support one antoher and to help each. I have been trying to alter my perception and realize that we are all here and trying to achieve the same goal.

Why is everybody on these forums so hateful???? All the guy is venting about his job, if you guys say you don't vent and that you love your job every minute of everyday then you are full of sh**!! There have been threads devoted to making fun of all the stupid customers we see in a day(I work for an indirect Nextel dealer, well I guess Sprint now) So I know what we deal with on a day to day basis. People are dumb sometimes. Everybody just relax and post and have a good time with it. Please.

Haha, I got another dumb customer, here's what happened.

Lady comes into the store, screaming at me, asking for the manager, I see what she wants and explains to her that this is a retail and that I will help her out. What happened was that she was getting charged every month for someone's Cingular service. I call customer service, and as I'm speaking to the customer service agent, I pull up the account and find out that its the lady's son. I let the service agent know, I bet he fell out of his chair. Service agent gives me a minute to explain to the lady whats going on, and she wouldn't have it, and started to scream why Cingular allowed her son to use her debit. Service agent told me that all the son needed was her debit card, the info on her debit, or her check. We find out that he set it up for autopay online, all of this while the lady was screaming in my ear, which made it hard for me to listen to the service agent. I explained it to her several times, and I kept cool throughout the entire ordeal. Service agent told me to advise her to file a police report, since the error isnt on Cingular's side. As the service agent talked to me, the lady started to scream in my ear again, to which I just turned aside and struggled to listen to the service agent (I did tell her to give me a second several times btw). I guess she didn't like being ignored, so she ran out. The service agent and I had a laugh about it, and he put it in the notes. Her bank is currently investigating this and I hope that she gets humiliated.

If he can't handle one customer, I don't think he could handle hundreds of customers throughout the day...

Posted by: Wonwad

Some people get too cocky about their jobs.

THAT was my point! It's ok to vent...we ALL deal with the same stuff every day. But if u JUST started and are already crying about your job, then maybe it isn't for you that's all I'm sayin.

Someone call the waaaaaambulance already

Been working for a little more than half a year.

Posted by: Alfred_Neuman

ive noticed this forum has become divided into like the democrats and republicans, with the all pro cingular(sold their soul to cingular/bleed cingular) being the democrats here.

its like it a constant battle with the democrats spewing the same lines over and over (dont like it, quit), which it does look like the company itself has been rolling for quite sometime now.

Posted by: Wonwad

I wished I owned a Cingular store, so I'd have the freedom to humiliate and insult bad customers.

Posted by: VMV702

I hear ya Alfred...Trust me, I'm going to part-time next month because I'm getting burnt out as well. I find myself being less patient with people and not enjoying my job like I used to. 6 1/2 years of CORE store retail will do that to you...

But I just got my W2...and while it may not be alot to some, I made $54,000 this past year. Working RETAIL. I'm a single dude who didn't go to college so for me it's pretty damn good.

You hafta put up with alot, but at the end of the day it comes down to dollars and cents. Although I am willing to sacrifice some of those dollars for a bit more happiness/sanity lol

I have those moments when things are soo piled up and go on for months. I work at an agent location and for example: I manage the store, train new hires, do the returns, and monitor Cingular U completion. We have had staffing issues for the past year and I would say out of the year about half of it was spent 80+ hours a week. Well all of that was to get to this. You know you are burnt out when you leave your cell phone at home thinking you put it in your pocket.

Posted by: Wonwad

$54,000 a year isnt bad...for a single guy.

Posted by: 1badprincess

Put it in this perspective.... would you rather have an employee come on here and vent about their days or would you rather have an extremely uptight irrate employee bring a gun to work and let it all out at once??? And while you happen to be either working with them or just passing by? You never know he could be your coworker. HF is a form of therapy for pretty much a bunch of us, dont like it dont read the thread. Plain and simple.

Posted by: 1badprincess

oh yea btw i am in no way condoning bringing firearms into the workplace. fyi!! lol

I love stuff like that..... I had a guy who pulled a deposit for on add on line and I was like WTF is going on here, he has good Pay History... So I do a social security # search and there’s another account with a slightly different name, contact info and address. He says he has nothing to do with that account, its identity theft. I start to read back on the memos and there are a ton that say unauth male called in said he’s account holders brother... the account had been opened six years prior and there’s a memo about a cosigner.... so I asked the cust could you have put this is in your name for your brother a long time ago and forgot? The cust said no, he would have remembered something like that. But he did confirm he had a brother that lived in the city the bill went to. SO I told him to file a police report and we can cancel out the $500+ balance that account had been rolling over (it was still active) and that we needed to immediately cancel it. He said he had to go and would cancel it and file a police report later, I told him if its fraud we really need to cancel the account right then but he wouldn’t listen...
He comes back in three days later; both his accounts have been suspended because of non payment, I asked him if he filed a police report.
Cust: “No, found out it is my brother using the phone and I would not want to prosecute him, but I feel I shouldn’t be held responsible for it. I want my phones turned back on with no reconnect fee and the balance on the other account credited it off”…..
……… and ------ he didn’t want the “fraudulent” account canceled!…….
I argued with him for a while, then he left angry and call cs, and although I memoed the heck out of the account and even put my phone number in it in case anyone had questions CUST SERVICE ACTUALLY CREDITED HIM EVERYTHING WITHOUT CANCELING THE “FRAUDULENT” ACCOUNT!!
