Nokia 9300 Series 80 Questions from a new Nokia Owner

Hi all,

I have a few questions pertaining to the 9300 nokia communicator. First, does it take a memory card higher then 512MB, Second, does it allow for video at all, third, what symbian programs are best for a series 80, and lastly, could someone elxplain why Edge is so slow? It is supposed to be about 100Kbps, and it seems ungodly slow, as well as the processor seems to drag when i lauch programs. Do i need to do a reset to clear it out and give it back all the program memory it may be tying up?

Thanks all,

Jeffrey

From what I understand, a 2gb card would work. The EDGE question boggles the mind for me as well. Sometimes webpages load smooth, and others...There's a program (listed in this part of the forum) called Rebooter that's great 2 have. I don't know how often 1 should reboot, but i check my memory and don't notice large chunks of mem gobbled up. I make sue to clear the cache and history whenever I finish web browsing.

I had a 2 gb card and it wouldn't read in the phone. I had formatted it in the phone, but it still wouldn't read. I don't know what was wrong, but it simply wouldn't read it.

How are you judging the speed of EDGE?

If the issue is Opera, then the bottleneck is probably that the Nokia 9300 processor simply doesn't have the horsepower to render things as fast as EDGE is capable of dragging them in. The processor is really underpowered when confronted with an application like Opera. You would find it much faster on an S60v3 phone.

On the other hand, if you are tethering, that's a different issue.

I never got a 2GB card to work reliably in my 9300. I had better luck with a 1GB MMC card.

I can't really say what programs are best because I have no idea what you want to do with the phone.

Oh, and the RealPlayer does handle some video, but keep in mind the processor limitation - it may not be able to render it quickly enough.

Jeffrey, if you have the original 9300, not 9300b, and you are in North America (with 850/1900MHz carriers), you can expect poor reception and no EDGE. In an unusual outcome for Nokia, the original 9300 had poor reception on 1900MHz, and of course it lacks 850MHz. I have read that Rogers in Canada only supports EDGE on 850MHz, and it's quite likely the same with Cingular in the U.S. Even if Cingular and T-Mobile in the U.S. support EDGE on 1900MHz, poor reception will still cut the data transmission rate.

How does one tell which version of the Nokia 9300 do they have? you guys mentioned s60v3 and then someone mentioned s80.. so.. how does one find that?

because i was given a 9300 and it was an unlocked and supposedly was told it came from europe.. please advise, thanks.

Remove the battery door and look at the label under the battery. For North America you want to see "Model: 9300/b Type: RA-4" at the top of the label. The 900/1800/1900 Euro/Asian version is "Model: 9300 Type: RAE-6"

The antenna on the 9300b actually sticks out a few mm from the case. The 9300(a) does not have this feature. It's rather distinctive, but you need to know what to look for.

Both the Americas and European/Asian versions of the 9300 are S80. S60v3 is something else entirely.

As many have observed, the GSM 1900 performance on the 9300a/RAE-6 is terrible. It isn't a good choice even if you use a 1900-only network. The 9300b/RA-4 on the other hand is a good perfomer on GSM 850 and GSM 1900.

Ahh, well, I have the RAE-6 version, made in Finland and unlocked.

It's not that bad of a terrible performer. I've used it as a TMO2GO and also have it tethered to my computer and use it primarily for SMS use. Seldom do I make any voice calls(I'm deaf).... :-)

Can anyone comment on surfing howardforums on this thing? I'm really looking to get one to replace my BB pearl so i can retain bbc and surf a little of hofo during the day. If it's got enough horsepower for hofo I'd be happy.

well green.. there is good news and bad news.. good news is that the browser seems to be a lot better with the recent upgrade (its not that brilliant straight out of the box). the bad news is that the upgrade seems to kill bbc (or so far one report says).

this could be a one time issue, but there are not a lot of peopel rushing to the defense of the Cingy 9300 w/ upgrade

I emailed nokia about the pc suite connection issue post upgrade and was told they needed to speak with me on the phone about it. I will call them probably mon or tues and ask them about bbc issue also. I'll report back next week.

I use opera mini for surfing hofo with my 9300. OM works very quick on the device, faster than the built in browser even with the upgrade. Can access most anything with OM, just can't download with it. Use built in browser for that.
