Pocket PC/Blackberry on a voice plan

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I'm wondering if anyone's had an experience on hooking up a Pocket PC or Blackberry on their regular voice plan? I'm thinking of getting a used unit (doing due diligence of course with regards to ensuring its clean and usable) on my existing plan.

My voice plan includes unlimited Internet and text messaging so I don't want to lose those. But, instead of carrying around a second PDA, I'd like to get an integrated PDA/phone but I don't want the extra data charges that go with the Blackberry and Pocket PC plans.

Any insight or advice here?

thanks in advance!

You can add data plans, including Blackberry, to any voice plan.

I'm going to assume the Unlimited Internet on your account is the "Unlimited Mobile Browser," which of course, will NOT cover any data usage on a Pocket PC or Blackberry.

Also, if you switch to a Blackberry device, you are required to add a Blackberry feature to your account.

Yes that's correct. Sorry for not being clear.

Really? Even if I'm not going to use the Blackberry part on the network... Ugh.... That IS a pain... I just don't want to have to carry around 2 devices, I don't want to pay for a service I don't want/need...

Thank you for the replies...

I don't believe you are required to add a Blackberry data plan if you have a Blackberry. However, you won't be able to use any data features without one, including the browser.

With Bell Mobility, yes. The policy before used to be, if you had a Blackberry, a Blackberry plan or feature was mandatory. Then it changed that if you had a Blackberry, a plan or feature was not required, but highly recommended. Now its back to the first policy: Blackberry = blackberry plan or feature.

I never heard of this either. However it is true that most promotions related to Blackberry require a DATA plan/feature to be elligible.

But Jase is right about the usage, no data features = no 'per usage' web nor email.

Customers on a BlackBerry device must have a BlackBerry Data price plan or feature for the device to function properly. The device was designed to operate with the appropriate data component.

I think you can use something like a treo 700wx without any data plan, so you won't be able to check email and use internet unless of course you have a sdio wifi card.

To function properly : To be able to use it as something more than just a cell phone.

Unless the requirements have changed very recently, we have a LOT of customers with Blackberry with no data features. We call them 'Golf-course-Blackberry'. AKA: I don't know what to do with it other than as a phone but the other businessmen at the golf course got one so I better get one too so I look 'business'.

I don't think it's that.. I think some people want a phone with PDA functions like a proper address book, tasks list and calendar etc...We never use data on the Treo - he uses it as a palm with a phone in it..

My BB on the other hand is more email than phone so I think it's not necessarily to look "cool" like the other golfers..but convenience just not data.

Its current as of November 2006.

I wouldn't bother risking a Blackberry without a data plan or suffer difficulties with voice services. If you are lucky enough to be able to use the device for voice-only then congratulations.

currently you are are required to carry a bb feature or plan with a blackberry, there is no pay per use available

on most other pdas, you can have pay per use at $15/meg I believe

I imagine they may be complaining of missed calls and reception problems. The Blackberry platform requires the ability to talk to the blackberry servers even if no email or web access is used. Without it, the unit will constantly look for the blackberry servers - draining the battery, tieing up the line (in 1X mode) and acting very sluggish.
