sony 810i vs. SYNC ?

I'm ready to upgrade my old Nokia 6010.

I've narrowed down my choice to either the 810i or the SYNC.

I'm leaning toward the 810i, but I like the flip feature on the SYNC, and I'm worried about durability.

At a glance the SYNC seems like it would survive more drop tests.

Can the 810i be setup to lock automatically?

I've got my old 6010 set up to lock after a few seconds, so I can drop it in my pocket.

I'm concerned the 810i screen, and camera lens will get scratched up doing this.

I like the music and camera features on these phones but I'm hard on tools, which ones is more durable?

Thanks

Since you are used to a candy-bar style phone already, I think you might be happier with the w810i. Yes it has auto-lock. It has a better MP3 player than the SYNC. Just get a screen protector or a clear case if you are worried about dropping it and such.
I looked at both and choose the SYNC. I just prefer a flip style and it has a much better screen and 3G capabilities.
They are both good phones. One is better video/internet and the other better music.
That is the way I see it.

w810i hands down. I've had both, the w810i beats the Sync at almost everything, especially reception and call quality, battery life is WAY longer, the mp3 player is better (you can multi-task while using it, built in FM radio, UI easier to use, comes with data cable AND headset for free, it's easier to hold/not as bulky, camera has autofocus, comes with more memory standard, java apps are faster (proven by benchmarks). The Sync's screen is slightly better and could have potentially faster download speeds if available in your area (not in mine).

The A707 SYNC blows the Sony Ericsson away with it's display, it's 3G data access, it's price, not to mention it's compatibility with online subscription services. I don't know what pope is smoking but the reception on both is great and the Samsung has a much louder earpiece. Did I mention A2DP, something which the supposedly "music-oriented" W810i completely lacks?

another vote for the w810 it depends on what u want, i dont really use a2dp, battery hog

Another vote for the w810i

As a mostly Nokia user, I was leery about the w810i. Still am having fits with space being on # key rather than on zero when writing something, but doing text is prohibitively expensive on cingular anyway.

I think you would be very pleased with the W810i. The only thing I have seen outperform it in the RF department is N3620. Protector on the screen for good measure. Camera lens is recessed so don't fret about that; you can mod it with a lens cover back. The UI is mighty fine and flexible too, at least if you de-brand it so Jack Splat key gives user menu instead of trotting off to spend money. Just beware if you de-brand, you lose Cingular Oz applets.

if you can get over multitasking with the mp3 player, no camera flash or autofocus then the SYNC is a smart choice.
3G is the biggest factor with this tho, if you dont need it then there are better options for Edge than even the SYNC or 810. If you want the 3G speeds then the 810 isnt even an option. With the 3G, websites like orb and other streaming video options are great...then its a candybar vs flip phone shape decision...

my vote also goes for the w810i. I used a SYNC for a couple of days before I said "no thanks". as usual, it was the same old duhl and boring Samsung scene.

the w810i is still one of my all time favorites just because it looks, works and feels great.

w810i baby... been using it ever since it came out and it has proven it's worth of every penny included in the $500 i spent on this

After narrowing down my choices, those were the two phones I had to choose from. I went with the Samsung because I have a Mac, and Sony seems to go out of their way to make their stuff not work with Macs.

The w810i is the way to go. I see by your signature that you made a wise choice and ordered the w810i?

Just got the w810i tonight.

WOW.

This thing is cool.

Thanks for the replies.

I'd say 240x320 is slightly better than 176x220 Playing video is absolutely amazing. As far as music goes, the W810i is fine as long as you don't get this imfamous hiss. But both are great phones. It really comes down to form and questions like 3G, radio, etc. Personally I thought the center keypad was way too small on the 810i. The 707's keypad is almost perfect for those with larger hands. If the 810i had had the same screen, a better keypad, no hiss issues, and stereo Bluetooth I probably would have chosen it.

The w810i has amazing reception, battery life is killer, great music player. As for the screen and camera lens i don't think you have to much to worry about. I've had my w810i for close to a year now and the camera lens doesn't have a mark on it, my screen is also holding up very nicely, only a very slight scratch on the bottom of the screen .

I'm not to sure about the sync but i've never really heard to many good things about samsungs, but who knows maybe they have stepped up their game recently .

W810 EXCEPT you have 3G data connect
W810 can be unbranded or change language to fit your need, A707 can't

WOw, I feel like a hypocrit. my w810i is buggier than H3LL. The music player stopped and buzzed twice tonight, then it froze up on me, then it like reset itself, it went completely black and then WSOD.. been doing this since I got it the 15th..

Not so sure about sony ericsson's anymore, the z500a and w600i were buggy like this to.. I think I'm back to being a moto fanboy.. The new UI on the v3xx is mighty purdy.. haha
