i'm really surprised the dash doesnt come with any software to keep a simple list like a grocery list. can someone suggest a good,small app that does so?

I don't have a Dash, but I would presume it would have the Notes application on there.

Smartphone doesn't have notes, but you can put a simple list in the tasks, or I have emailed myself a grocery list in the past. It probably isn't the most elegant solution, but it woks fine for a shopping list

No Notes app... Excel is not editable on the dash. The email idea isn't horrible, except that everytime you need to add an item a new email would need to be sent
