I think only GU87 is locked, darn AT&T

Someone told me he has GD88 with A24 and can take picture in email mode which means that picture sent on PC are in 640*480...
someone can confirm?

Posted by: lost_rebel

There is no A24 software. Sorry. GD88 is the same hardware and softwarewise as GD87 or GU87 or GD86.

GD88 is not just for Asia, it will be sold in Canada and South/Central America as well.

You know what RayRaymond, I would suggest that you do NOT buy the GD88 at all. I know that I am upsetting the apple cart (especially in this forum) but I have found that this phone is the most user-unfriendly phone I have ever used/owned (I have owned over 15 phones). I just wish that I could trade it in for the Samsung V205 ($100 cheaper too). The only saving grace is that I’ve bought the GD88 for my wife. This is so that I may send/receive MMS (hopefully available in Canada by the end of March) with her via my SE-P800.

The camera on the GD88 is really crappy compare to the V205. Go to your FIDO store and take a picture of the same thing with both phones and you will easily see the difference. The V205 has a higher resolution camera and it will take slightly bigger/sharper pictures than the GD88. The one down side of the V205 is that you cannot IR pictures and since MMS is not available in Canada yet all you can do with your pictures is use them for bragging rights. The display on the V205 is also 65k color (16bits) but it’s a little smaller. The phone book of the V205 is not as fancy as the GD88 but like most responsible users out there I would not like to put my friends and my family member’s pictures in the phone. Can you imagine, it would be bad enough if my phone was lost or stolen and all my contacts info is now in someone’s hand but now he can also ID everyone (via their picture) of all my contacts as well!! Holy S---t, what a betrayal of “assumed trust” that would be!

Above all else, trust me when I say that this phone DOES NOT have an “active flip.” No dealer or distributors I had come across seems to know this very important fact! As a matter of fact, this is the ONLY flip phone that I know of that does not give you the option for activating the flip for answering/ending a call. Damn Panasonic!

RayRaymond,

-At this point any GU87 you come across in Canada will be locked. (Why would anyone lock a tri-band phone?? It’s all about money.)
-The GD8x and GU8x do have slight differences to their menus. (eg. Camera is menu 5 in a GD8x and menu 6 in a GU8x)
-The GU87 will also have Tetris as well as that stupid Herding Sheep game. (Expect a .25 to .5 sec delay in game control key commands.)
-The highest released BIOS version is A22.
-And yes there are GD8x editing programs out there (providing you purchase their USB/Com cable). None of these program will allow you to use the IR to link to your PC or PDA.

Again, go and get something else other than a GD8x or GU87. Sometimes looks can be deceiving.
You should be able to find a V205 to compare by now. In the meantime, do yourself a big favor and download a copy of the GD88 and the V205 manual and do a detailed feature per feature comparison of the two phones before you buy.

I did and I will stick with my GD87 thank you.

Bigger display
multiple methods to get pictures out
Camera functions, frames and zooms
Better RF
Still does not have java
Already own it

Yes, I know there are some downsides but I have had my GD for 6 months now. The samsung resolutions is a little better than twice my GD but what good does it do you? You still can not get it out of the mobile and you have a smaller screen to view it on.

Ok so you have it in for the Pana phone and that is fine, get your samsung, that is why they make different mobiles and there are so many on the market. But since you waited this long for the Samsung, why not get the Sharp? or just wait for the new pana or the new samsung?

You need to get your facts correct as well.
I have A38 in my GD as well as all GUs, mine is not locked (yes GUs are, so what?) I do not have a lag time while playing either pathetic game. Functionally mine is the same as GU with a couple of exceptions. Can you name them? Bet not. Mainstream users would never know.

If AT&T and Rogers wanted the mobiles unlocked, then they would. It was not Pana's decision. Do not want one locked, get a GD. Simple.

I used the public tools that were available, after all I already had a data cable for an Allure and have no problems with syncing my calendar or phone book as well as xfering pics back and forth.

I am glad that you have your opinion and as you can see I have mine. Samsung is not going anywhere and neither is Pana anytime soon. I am sure that the debate on which is better is far from over, but in the meantime, I look forward to moving ahead not laterally in my mobile phone purchases.
Cheers
