Input System Error - the system is being restarted.

Hi,

I have a Pearl 8100 on Rogers, version .51 of the software.

I seem to be getting an error that is not too common. Let me explain how I get it.

1. From the main screen with the icons, not on any specific application. I start to type someones name, so as to call them. As soon as it switches to the phone app, I click the Pearl MENU key and choose Call From Address Book. I then type in someones name to do a lookup of that person. As soon as I start to type something after the first or second character I get the following error:

Input System Error - the system is being restarted.

It goes away after a second, but I have to exit the Address Book and start the procedure again. I could stay in the Address book, but it does not search any longer.

This is my second Pearl in 2 weeks. I had it exchanged for this error. Now this error does not happen each time. It is very intermittant. When I try to recreate it, it could take 30-40 searches to come up. But sometimes it comes up on my first try after getting the phone out of its sleep. In fact it happens most often after not touching the phone for 10 minutes.

When performing the search like this, my intention is to just look up someone home address, or information I have about the person attached to their entry. I try to limit the icons on the main screen, and I cannot pull up address information without going into the address book, as there is no view or edit choice in the phone application, so I find this the quickest way to get to the address book, and this is it.

Can others please try to recreate it on theirs, it does not make sense that I am the only one to get it.

I have researched RIMs website and the error does exist:

Quote:
BasicEditField API
SDR98182

When using the BlackBerry Pearl™ 8100 smartphone in either SureType® or multi-tap mode, selecting the minus symbol as the first character in a BasicEditField with a NumericTextFilter that allows negative numbers causes an input system error to occur.
Impact:
When in either SureType or multi-tap mode on a BlackBerry Pearl 8100 smartphone, selecting a minus symbol as the first character in a BasicEditField causes an alert that states “Input system error. The system is being restarted” to appear.
Workaround:
No workarounds are needed. The minus symbol displays on the screen after the alert closes

But I am not entering any minus symbol and a minus symbol does not accidentely appear on the screen.

I spoke to Rogers Blackberry technical support about this, and they did not have any answers. On my last Pearl, I performed 3 total wipes, and 3 full installes of all the latest versions of the OS, .67 and .71 from cingular, then back again to .51 each version exhibited the problem.

Rogers decided to replace the phone. But obviously it is not the phone, it is the software. So what now? . . . .

Thanks,
Allan

Ok, I think I found a way to recreate it. I cannot get it to happen all the time this way, but at least 1 or 2 out of 10 times. Much better odds then once every 50.

Chances to get the error increase, if you let the Pearl go to a blank screen first before trying, (just give it 2 minutes without touching it) then wake it up by pressing the keys as follows:

On the main screen type a name (even if it does not exist in your phone book) type a name that uses 2 character from the keypad, 1-9, then 1 character that is not on the key pad. (all you need is the 3 presses). Then click menu, choose call from address book, then type a character again from the keypad (1-9). This has brought up the error for me quite a bit.

I think it has to do with the phone going from digit entry to text entry back to digit, and then mixing itself up.

Anyway, I would feel so much better if others were able to get the same error as I have.

Thanks,
Allan

I was curious so I tried this -- no problems in about 15 attempts using the method above.

For reference, I'm on Cingular with v.71.

Thanks for trying, though that is too bad, (for me). The combination I find works best is:

G then R then A
Then click menu, choose call from address book, then type G

And do this while waking up the phone.

Anyway, hope others get this.

But I have found away around it. To get the option to pull up the address book I just click one of the letters that are not shared with the numbes, then click menu, etc, and I have not received the error yet. Knock on wood.

Anyway, if others can try it would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Allan

Using the G R A method, I too get an error. So it's not just you, it's not just Rogers and it's not your software version.

Interesting!

0freespirit0: Thank god it is not just me. I thought I was possesed! Thanks for trying.

Vinni_puh: I do not get it every time. It is quite randomn, but mostly just after waking it up. So try it every once in a while and see what happens.

Probably some freeky bug in their software. We will have to name it after me.

All I know is I feel a little better today knowing it is not just me.
