8800 <-> Sirocco Housing Swap

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: bad_azz_bmr

Wondering if anyone knew if the 8800 Sirocco housing will fit a standard 8800?
The housing is available for sale on CNN…
Thank you

I don't think it will because the measurements do not add up on both phones (at least according to GSM-arena). The 8800 Sirocco is 2.5mm thicker than the 8800.

Posted by: silverbullet818

Thicker???? YUCK! I just spent a whole lot of time and $$ personally modifying my 8801 to fit into the thinner 8800 case. Why would you want to go the other way??

{This message has been merged with a recent thread in the same topic.}

I am just looking for validation here, but I figure there have been no major housing modifications between the two phones so can you swap the housings out.

I actually like the housing for the sirroco better than the original, but the original is a bit cheaper.

The Scirocco housing is thicker than the 8801, and the 8801 thicker than the 8800. So you will be going from a slim phone to a thicker one by doing this swap. Besides, I think the chassis is different on the Scirocco

hey guys,
i noticed the sirroco's(sp?) housing looks a but better, and i really like it. Do you think the sirrocos faceplate will fit the regualr 8800/8801?

{Note from Mod: Posts starting with this one have been merged into an earlier thread regarding the same topic.}

The size of the two phones are different. I'm 99.99% sure a straight conversion would not be successful.

Posted by: drewyehboi

It wouldn't be from sirroco to 8801, but would be from sirroco to 8800. I'm pretty sure but don't quote me. At least that is the way they are grouped on cnn.cn

Posted by: mohammadz

hmmm, my phone is the 8800, im really trying to figure out if this is possiblee!! thanks for the help so far guys

Posted by: prolepsis

If you look closely at the pictures on cnn.cn, the housing points (where the springs latch and so forth) seem to be pretty close. The charging contact is different, as the Sirocco one is smaller. Note that I don't know if it'll work, as I haven't tried it!

In your case though, if you have an 8800 and are fine with not having the 850 band, then it might be easier to just sell the 8800 and buy a Sirocco.

In some ways I am tempted to order the Sirocco housing, the Sirocco charging contacts and a few extra 8801 antennas and see if I can rip apart my 8801 and jam it into the housing. That way, I'd have the body style and full 850 band as well. I don't know if anyone has done this yet though and the prices of the Sirocco parts aren't cheap, so I am thinking that it might be of lower risk (in my situation) to just buy a Sirocco and live without the 850 band.

It does not fit guys. I have both phones.

Posted by: prolepsis

Loriolus - thanks for the clarification--much appreciated!

Posted by: Rameo

can you post some pics of the steps you took?

Posted by: Rameo

the same steps on the 8800 service manual. Only changed keypad. I even extracted some things from my actual sirocco. To those of you with Sirocco originals can you rip the themes and post them here. You can get around the encryption by using oxygen phone manager. Let it read your gallery, scroll to themes click on the ink themes and light and dark themes and hit the save button and save them on your computer. Mine is with my mom right now and I won't be getting it back for a couple of weeks.

i broke my 8801 this weekend (bent the front metal under the screen, and numbers 1, 4, 7 fell off)

do you think that i could swap the sirocco housing from this guy:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...0115631808&rd=1

and either make my 8801 antenna fit, or buy a 8800 antenna

i just need to fix my poor phone and really wanted to change from the reg brushed aluminum look...

thanks guys!!!

Posted by: Odie

Can anyone else confirm that the housing swap worked for them? (perhaps with some pictures?)
- I have a beaten up original 8800 and some ebay sellers have stated that they will definately be able to fit the Sirocco housing to the original 8800.

Posted by: kyosuke

So we have 2 guys saying it wont work and 1 guy saying it will

I think im going to buy a sirrocco black housing and see if it will work on my 8801

Posted by: CrewNeckTee

I just bought one off of Ebay and I have a regular 8800, I am interested to see if this works. Can anybody clarify?

Thanks.

I too have become enamored of the superior looks of the Sirocco handset as compared with those shared by the 8800 & 8801 series. When I purchased a brand new "For USA Only" 8801 handset last month I scoured the internet and read up on everything ever posted on the subject of fitting the 8801 slide chassis assembly into the Sirocco housing. Armed with that knowledge plus the repeated viewing of the commercial grade disassembly video of the 8800 handset and preliminary coverage presented in the two-part video of the disassembly of the Sirocco Gold handset (all three of which can be found on Youtube), I took the plunge and purchased an OEM Sirocco Silver housing assembly. After discovering that Nokia didn't include the various parts that must be installed in what they refer to as the housing's "midplate" I managed to acquire each of those from cnn.cn One side bit of info that may be of use--at present anyway: all the OEM Sirocco Silver housing assemblies that are currently on the market come with the black keypad that was only intended for the Sirocco Black housing assembly, however brand new OEM versions of the extremely difficult to find brushed metallic silver one that is original to the factory assembled silver handset is indeed still available--currently listed and in stock at blueunplugged.com Back to fitting the 8801 slide chassis assembly to the Sirocco housing or more correctly the Sirocco housing shell to the 8801 slide chassis assembly: as to acquiring those uninstalled parts in the midplate, there is only one thing you must be sure to do to make everything work seamlessly, you must be certain to obtain a Sirocco internal antenna component as well (do not purchase the 8800 unit as it is too thin in the same way the 8801 component is too thick). The Sirocco unit has just become available and is presently in stock at blueunplugged.com

Posted by: phattbam

Great to hear that. Did you get to take any pics during the DIY swap??

Posted by: kyosuke

hmmmmz i might just have to go this route one more time lol. I have to go back and read my older post because i forgot what stopped me from making my conversion work

i was trying to do 8801 to a 8800 sirocco but there was a couple of parts i couldnt buy sperately online at the time :/

Posted by: tlkiser

I would love to been able to have taken step-by-step pictures of the entire process from start to finish, but unfortunately I am unequipped to do that sort of thing. Just know that if you repeatedly study those three Youtube videos I referenced till you have them down cold, paying particular attention to copy everything the technician does with regards to removal of all the housing parts, then with patience and determination you'll have the confidence and know-how to pull off the swap with no more than perhaps the typical dropping a screw and trying to find it type of difficulty. Aside from the stunning improvement in its appearance my handset now sports, a practical result I immediately noticed after I installed the Sirocco housing is a subtle, yet distinctly noticeable improvement in the speed at which the various functions of my 8801 slide chassis are engaged via the keys the new housing is equipped with.

Posted by: kyosuke

i quickly browsed through that blue.com site and saw nothing that could help me, do you have a direct link where they have sirocco parts ? what did you do about the small speaker ? did you replace the charger unit as well ?

Posted by: tlkiser

KYOSUKE: Here's the link to paste in your browser for the Sirocco Antenna component: http://www.blueunplugged.com/p.aspx?p=118542 In case you will be using the Sirocco Silver housing here is the link for the OEM keypad:
http://www.blueunplugged.com/p.aspx?p=118557 With regards to your reference to a small speaker: if you are meaning the small rectangular flat component that is mounted immediately to the right of the swing out camera assembly at the top of the LCD side of the slide chassis, just lift it out (as you will have to do that in order to swap out the new housing assembly's color coordinated plastic lens cover), then reinstall that same speaker in the exact same manner you found it, but now in the rectangular socket/clip of the new lens cover, (i. e. with the prongs facing down and the smooth steel side with the small hole in the center facing up). If by chance you have to install the microphone unit in the socket at the bottom of the midplate, be absolutely certain that the side of that unit that has the round concave socket is facing towards the right (i .e. towards the adjacent socket containing the color coordinated charger/connector plug). Yes you will have to obtain the correct charging stand for the Sirocco line (the DT-16) and there is a converter cord you can obtain to allow your existing Nokia charger to power it.

I"ll have to look into this mod/conversion. thanks for posting
