v710 stuck in hands free mode

Hello everyone,

I have a (hopefully simple) problem that neither Verizon or Motorola was able to help me out with, outside of buying a new phone. My v710 is stuck in handsfree mode. I use a wired ear piece, and for about a week now I'm not able to use my phone normally, only with the ear piece in. I checked the jack and nothing is stuck in there, I've looked in the debug mode for help, I've turned off all the handsfree settings I can find, but still nothing has worked.

Anyone have any tips as to how I might make the phone recognize that there is nothing plugged into the jack so I can use it normally again?

Thanks!

Usually the only thing that causes the handset to go into handsfree mode is a broken off piece of a headset stuck in the H/F jack. You have to take them apart and push the piece out with a pic (PITA.)

I took a look and had another techie here look and we can see nothing in there, and I verified that the only hands free device I'm using is still in once piece, nothing broken or chipped about it.

My next guess is that maybe a contact is bent? I can see two inside of the jack, but if the two are touching, would it think something is attached? They don't look like they're touching, but it's small in there.

Try doing a master reset:

Press [Menu]
Arrow up or down to “Settings”
Press [Select] (Right soft key)
Arrow up or down to “Initial Setup”
Press [Select] (Right soft key)
Arrow up or down to “Master Reset”
Press [Select] (Right soft key)
Enter Security Code (Default: 000000)
Press [OK] (Right soft key)
Phone will display “Reset All Phone Settings?”
Press [YES] (Left soft key)

Note: This will not erase anything in the phone like pictures, tones, phonebook, etc. It will only revert the phone back to the original settings.

Just tried it, still no luck...does it seem like I'm boned?

If the handset is still under a year old and is not damaged, it is still under the manufacturers warranty. If it is over a year old and you have insurance, you can file a claim and they should cover it. Either way, I would call Verizon to see what options they give you to get it remedied. They can either mail you a FRU (field replacement unit) or can do an OTC (over the counter Xchange) at one of the retail stores. Even if the phone is out of warranty, Verizon will sometimes help you out. If you have been a customer with them for a long time or have good pay history, it doesn't hurt to mention that. And, if you tell them you use this phone for business and would like it overnighted, they will usually overnight it for free.

The headset jack on the V710 uses "spring" loaded contacts to make connection to the main printed circuit board. By spring loaded conatcts in this case I mean small strips of metal that bend when the board is installed against them. It is possible the contacts have become bent by the stress of the headset being installed and stressed by insertion/removal cycles. If you're up to disassembling the phone that's the first thing I would look for. Also, cleaning the contact pads on the pcbd may help; using a fiberglass contact cleaning brush and DEOXIT contact cleaner may also help. If none of this is of any avail, it's the jack.

No. The HSJ is soldered on, not modular.

And a broken solder joint can also cause this.

I stand corrected. The jack IS soldered to the pcbd. Somehow I was confusing it with the V265/276 series which is a spring contact jack. Thanks for the correction!

well, all of this recently became academic. I was so upset at the phone tonight that, although not hard, I bounced it off the ground and, lo-and-behold, the phone is working normally again. Technicians first tool: blunt force trauma.

Thanks everyone for your help!

We call that a 'technical tap' in the field. In fact, I watched Casablanca on VHS this weekend and the tracking was off on my 30 year old VCR, so I gave it a few technical taps and the picture was clear as day. Ha.

In my experience, that was known as the "Brute Force and Ignorance" method. Surprisingly it works a fair number of times. And other times, you break the main printed circuit board and that's all she wrote. Glad it solved your problem.
