Bluetooth from PC to 8525

Hey,

I just got an 8525 and I'm trying to transfer files via Bluetooth from my laptop to my phone. I'm able to transfer from the phone to my laptop but not vice versa. Is this a feature Cingular disabled? Right now I'm stuck having to use the USB cable. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Figured it out.

Settings\Connections\Beam\Allow Incoming Beams

That's not Bluetooth. That's your IR port. Bluetooth would be if you were across the room and able to transfer files through the Bluetooth connection. If your Laptop doesn't have Bluetooth installed, you can get a Bluetooth USB dongle, but it's un-necessary if you use the IR port or ActiceSync.

So... why did checking that box magically allow me to send files via my laptop? My laptop has Bluetooth and its IR port is disabled.

All you did was allow the IR port to recognize an Infrared beam. That's not Bluetooth since Bluettoth doesn't send on IR. Follow? For your IR port to work, it needs to face another IR port. Bluetooth works anywhere within distance and not through an IR port. They're not the same type of connection. All you checked in your phone was for it to allow any IR beam that it catches in it's IR window. That's it.

Well checking that box allowed me to accept files I send via my laptop's Bluetooth.

EDIT: Just unchecked that box and tried transferring a file via Bluetooth. It didn't work. Rechecked the box and it worked. Obviously a beam is more than just IR.

*sigh*

It's not Bluetooth. There are many different connection types. Bluetooth, IR Beam, USB, etc... You're using your Laptops IR port. It's sending your phone and recieving your phones files through the IR port. DO you know what Bluetooth is? Walk into another room. If you can't send files to your Laptop from around a wall and 20 feet away with the IR ports not lined up, guess what, then you're not connected via Bluetooth technology. Simple.

You checked the box to allow infrared beams that are being transmitted. That's NOT Bluetooth. :/

Once again, my laptop's IR port is disabled and I am sending this via BLUETOOTH. I right-click the file I want to send and select "to Bluetooth" and then choose the Bluetooth device I want to send it through. IR is disabled on both devices.

Do this from another room. If your phone ISN'T alligned with your IR, and you can do this from another room, then yes, that's using the Bluetooth. What you posted above had NOTHING to do with Bluetooth. The IR beam has nothing to do with that technology.

This is what you posted:

"Settings\Connections\Beam\Allow Incoming Beams"

That's has nothing to do with Bluetooth. It doesn't work on a beam. Notice in your COnnections that there's a seperate one called Bluetooth? Beam is a different connection.

Just tried it. Nothing changed. When I uncheck that box I'm unable to send files through Bluetooth on my laptop. Also, the IR port on the phone was facing me while the IR port on my laptop is on the right, 1" from my digital camera's dock. It's not sending through IR

That's weird. That setting shouldn't affect Bluetooth in any way, but if it works, it works. I don't have mine checked and I can use the Bluetooth on my Laptop, so I don't know why your device wont work unless you check the Beam setting. That's just nuts.

That setting is for bluetooth

Guess I have a magic Laptop then.

That box isn't checked and I use my Laptops Bluetooth.

Do you send FROM your laptop though?

The manual states: Beam Enables your device to receive incoming infrared and Bluetooth beams.

I have the box unchecked, but Bluetooth enabled, and I'm good to go.
