WM 2003 versions. 5days battery life vs. 8hrs.

I've got identical SMT5600's here, the difference is the software thats running on them. Both are running WM 2003, I know one is 2nd edition and the other seems to be a different ROM version (2.0.14.something vs 1.1.40.0)
Using the same battery one phone gets 5 days + battery life normal use and the other gets 8hrs sitting idle. The phone that gets 5+ days is also running mMode. How do I go about switches the software to match the phone thats getting 5+ days?
Also will installing new software remove the unlocking that I've done to the phone?
