LG cu500 - black browser bar?

ok i am almost positive that when i got this phone a few days ago that while browsing that there was NOT a black banner bar at the top of the browser.....now there is.....it sucks and wastes screen space....can i turn it off? if so, how?
also - can i get rid of those 5 bookmarks that can't just be deleted? thanks for all your help in advance!
