Rant: Nokia's "Repair service" is terrible

I purchased a Nokia 8801 about a year ago from today and after a few months the border under the screen began to come loose and get in the way of the screen. I'm not easily bothered by cosmetic issues so I just ignored it and went on with my life. Then by June of '06 (purchased the phone in February '06) the slider broke. I decided enough was enough and called Nokia to get the phone either replaced or repaired. They told me to send it in to the repair center under warranty, this was in december because I never really got around to taking care of it till then.

I just FINALLY got the phone back and to my surprise it wasn't repaired. I was furious as they'd had it for two months and shipped it back to me unrepaired. I called up nokia customer care again and they told me they should have contacted me about billing me for the repairs. I stated that first of all they never contacted me and that second of all i'd be damned if I was going to shell out another cent on a phone that broke on its own that I paid a good $600 for. They looked up my repair ticket and started giving me some crap about "corrosion damange" and "physical damage" saying that I damaged the phone to which I say BS, I always kept that phone in the velvet pouch it came in and it was always in either my suit jacket pocket or on a holster with the screen facing towards my body. After the run around I got yesterday they finally got me off the phone telling me to send it to the repair center again and asking them to "Re-evaluate" it. I know Nokia is just gonna give me the same crap again.

I am just ranting because I've had several Nokia phones and was always pleased with them but now that I actually have to claim something through warranty I feel like maybe I would like to do business with another company the next time I have to purchase a phone. $600 isn't cheap for a phone, especially if you're promised an exclusive 2 year warranty and they fail to deliever on it.

I'd threaten to call the better business bureau on them if they don't honor their warranty obligations & fix it!

I don't know what kind the manufactor policy is for warranty. I do have a question thou. How can you fix liquid damage and/or physical damage beyond repair? It is like when taking your computer to fine what is wrong and the tech opens it up and there is liquid damage inside the computer. The tech will say I can not fix it, there is liquid damage. You need to buy a new one. Same thing with phones.

well, i cant speak for nokia's warranty... but i know of moto's... most manufactuer warranties are pretty cut and dry though... they only cover and repair defects from manufacturing. aside from that, they usually dont cover physical, liquid, or wear and tear damage. liquid damage, in every case ive seen, isnt repairable.

in the op's case, i would reccommend asking to speak to a sup at the customer care (if you havnt already) and ask them to send you some proof of this damage, or just take the phone to a local service center, if you have any that will help you that is.... usually, a trained tech can open the phone and show you the damages that nokia's techs may have found.
