Upgrading to the pearl

I am in need of a new phone. My Slvr just isn't working for me. I've had it for almost a year, and I need something new. I'm really itching to get my hands on the pearl. I do a lot of texting, so that's why this phone jumped out at me. Is the keypad hard to get used to? I also use a Mac. Would I be able to use it with my computer?

Wait until Feb 20 and get the 8800, much easier to type then with the Pearl. I had the Pearl for 2 weeks and got rid of it, personally didnt love it.

I've had mine a month and a half and wouldn't trade it for anything else. My first BB ever. I think Handango has a software package that allows syncing with a mac, but I can't swear to it. I like the keyboard more and more each time I use it, but I have had nothing to compare it to.

I just looked at Handango out or curiosity and didn't see anything.

I've never had a blackberry before. I like the looks of the phone, but are the features nice as well? I want to make sure that I'm paying for the features, and not just the looks of the phone.

Why dont you get the blackjack? The pearl isnt 3G and the keyboard is a pain. Also ive heard of people having problems with the little pearl scroll ball failing when dirt gets in there.

If you need 3G access, the Pearl is not for you. However, it is still a great device, and the SureType input system is one that I've found to be very intuitive. Actually, the only thing lacking, in my opinion, is 3G. The lack of 3G is why I left T-Mobile, sold my Pearl, and switched to Cingular and a V3xx.

My sister just got the black jack. I was looking at it, but she bought it already. I guess I don't want to get the same phone, and have her get mad at me. The problem with the black jack is that I use a Mac, and I can't use winddows smartphones with it. They won't connect to the bluetooth on my iMac. I plan on buying a Macbook, so I guess that wouldn't be a huge problem. Is the Black jack worth the money? Are the features that more advanced than the pearl?

I had the Blackberry Peal for only an overnight period before taking it back, and getting another SE w810i. Although the Pearl is extremely sexy and shiny...it totally sucks as a mobilt phone, which to me is paramount in any device. If it is a great data device (the Pearl isn't), but it is a horrible mobile phone...I'm out. Garbled & poor incoming call-quality and many dropped calls made me rush to return it.

There are better alternatives. The Samsung Blackjack is a much better phone, and has superior data-transfer ability IMO. Smartphones are not for everybody (I'm not sure I'll keep mine or not...) but there are some much better phones out there than the Pearl.

With my Pearl, I had no issues at all with voice quality or dropped calls (this was with T-Mobile). I also considered it a wonderful data device, despite the lack of 3G. Also, the OS on all Blackberries is far more stable than Windows Mobile.

I'd be curious to know why you don't consider the Pearl a good data device.

I really didn't mean to be so pointed. I meant to say, that while the Pearl might be a good data device...it sucked as a mobile phone. I really didn't test the data capabilities of the phone at all in the short time I had it. If it had been any better of a mobile phone at all, I would probably still have it, but it just wasn't.

I have a Pearl on T-Mobile and it's awesome. I always liked Suretype, had a 7100 on Nextel for a while. I takes some getting used to, but after a day or so you're good. It's really good at guessing what you are typing. There will be times when you have to remember some gotchas with the keys, like "are" and "see" are spelled from the same keys, so you have to watch when you're typing so you get it right. The voice quality is also VERY good with this thing. I came from a 700p on Sprint and I really forgot how good the voice quality was on GSM.

I also have a Mac and the free PocketMac software works great. The major downside is you cannot install OS updates without a PC, so hopefull you have one at work or maybe a friend does. I just got a MacBook, typing from it now via Windows at work, so thats another optons if you have an Intel based Mac.

For me its the lack of 3G. After using a 3G phone ,using the Pearl felt like i was in the stone age as far as data speeds.

Hmmm...with most people seemingly in love with their Pearls, maybe my experience was a fluke. Who knows? I was all ready to like the phone...all black and shiny ...but I was totally disappointed.

i had a pearl for one month and now i have a blackjack. both work very well but i personally like windows mobile smartphones. as far as typing messages the pearl is much easier and quicker for common words. the blackjack misses letters if you start to type fast. the pearl does not suck as a phone and the rf is actually quite good. anyone complaining about poor reception should exchange it to see how good it should be. the blackjack does, however, have better sound quality while in a call.

if you are only going to use it as a phone and for messaging you might be better off with the pearl as it is smaller, has a faster and more easily searchable messaging application (sorting through stored messages) with better battery life. if you want to install 3rd party apps and want to use the phone for multi-media as well you are better off with the blackjack

I understand that. 3G is the reason why I switched carriers

Thanks for all of the help. I think that I might be leaning more towards the Black jack now. I keep seeing my sister use it, and I like it the more that I see it.

The Samsung BlackJack is twice the smartphone and mobile phone than the Blackberry Pearl will ever be, in my opinion. Like I said earlier...perhaps my bad experience was a fluke...but I doubt it.

I 100% agree.

My work just went from 7105t to 8700c. I HATE IT!!! Like carrying around another pancake phone. Looking to buy Pearl or Blackjack. Worried about SIM compat and BES server sync issues.
