Question about BlackJack USB charging

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

When plugged in to a computer, the unit is charging, correct? Have gotten both yes and no answers from Cingular.

And what about the spare battery and case? Does it charge via USB?

Thanks

Almost all Windows Mobile phones wud charge when plugged to USB port. Its true in the case of Blackjack too... wat do u mean bout spare battery & case chargin? If the battery is plugged into the phone then naturally dat wud also get charged.

Cool eh?

Yes it charges via USB however my experience has been that it only charges when the phone is on, unlike my 2125 it doesn't charge when the phone is off.

No the spare battery charger does not charge on USB, at least not on my PC with a powered hub.

It only charges when Activesync is running on the computer and the Blackjack is configured to use Activesync (not in usb modem mode, for example).

So if you connect the Blackjack via usb to a Mac, random powered usb port, or Linux box it will _not_ charge. I say this from experience.

Don't know about the spare charger though. Haven't tried it attached to a usb port.

The BJ combined power/usb connector is a bad combination with the high power consumption of UMTS. Yes, you can use it as a usb modem on a Mac or Linux box, but there is no way to actually keep power to the phone for much more than an hour (battery life) while doing so.

I thought BJ charged normally as any WM fons. Wasn't all WM fons supposed to charge on all USB port connection?

I'm able to do so on my MPx200...
And y is dat BJ's spare bat won't charge via USB!!

:O

Unfortunately it doesn't if there isn't an Activesync connection. Lots of people have complained about this. One of the many downsides of the Blackjack.

I've been thinking I'd be better off with an 8525 due to this limitation and others with the Blackjack. I'd have Bluetooth DUN. The phone would charge properly when used with a non-Windows box via usb. I'd get rid of the typing speed issue (fast typing = dropped characters). Either that or give up on UMTS for now and just stick with Symbian.

Actually, I don't think this is entirely true. I've found that yes, if you go into Settings | Connections | USB, and change it from "ActiveSync" to "Modem" or "Mass Storage" and connect it via USB to your Win PC, then it will NOT charge while connected. In this case, it will ONLY charge when you have it set to "ActiveSync" mode.

BUT...

If you don't modify that setting (leave it in ActiveSync Mode) and tether it to you PC via the USB port and use Internet Sharing applet, use the "USB" PC Connection option, then YOU ARE ABLE TO TETHER THE BJ to your PC, use it for internet connectivity for your PC, AND CHARGE simultaneously.

I've tested this out and it does work. Yes, the battery icon changes to "charging" but it also does in fact charge. I did this for about 2 hours on a 3G connection and my battery went from 1 bar to 3 bars while surfing...

Give it a try.

if i tether via usb pan, the battery will charge, but if its in constant use, the battery actually drains faster than it charges. it takes a long time, but my battery will go down, not up.
