w810 or Razr V3xx

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

w810 or razr v3xx. I have a sync right now, its too long when its opened. I realize the razr is as wide, but when you open it, its not a briefcase like the sync lol. I had a motorola v551 as my previous phone so I'm used to the motorola UI and really like it. The v3xx is supposed to be great from what I've read on here, it sounds like motorola really created a winner. I love how the w810 comes with headphones, usb cable, and since I'm owned by Sony, I already have memory sticks. The downside of the razr is that I think alot of people will have it (just like the sync), and not everyone has the w810 at all. I kinda like being different. What do ya think?

And now a long winded explanation/question (bear with me and thanks for your help)...

I bought a samsung sync in the beginning of January, unfortunately due to me going back to college, I couldn't trade it in before the 30 days. However, my mom who is on the family talk plan with me is eligible for an upgrade, she has an old samsung flip phone. So, I'm going to order either the V3xx or w810 on cingular's website as an upgrade under her number, but we're going to switch phones. I'm going to have the phone shipped to me... when it arrives, can I simply load the numbers from the sync's sim, over to the w810 or razr and then use the phone? Do I have to call cingular to make the switch? Then I would package up my sync with the sync sim, ship it to my mom, and she would go into the local cingular store. They'd switch her phone book from her old phone, to the sync's sim and start using the sync, and probably have to assign her number to the sync's sim (since it was previously my number)??

Basically the goal is to have the new phone shipped to me, let me be able to use it with my number... then ship the sync down to my mom, all the while there is no "phone downtime" and she can still use her old phone the entire time. Is what I described possible? By the way, I still have the sim from my old v551 (which was using the same phone number as the sync) if that helps or makes things easier. I actually think I can probably pop that right into the w810 if I get that (since its not 3g) and start using it.

Thanks everybody

I've always been a big fan of the Motorola UI, but always dreaded how slow it reacted. The V3xx has an updated UI that reacts instantly (as fast as you can press the buttons on the phone) and I am extremely happy with this. From what I've read it uses a new Nvidia based processor and a new OS (P2K05 I think is what it's called). Minus a couple of small quirks, I am very pleased with their end product.

Posted by: jm01dc

Yeah the GPU is made by nvidia I believe, and its supposed to be very fast (part of the reason people said moto really hit it with the v3xx).

Posted by: Shemmy

There's something about having an nVidia geforce GPU that makes the V3xx something you can't resist.

Posted by: steph280

I used to hate moto phones, they just don't make them like they used to. That is, until I got the V3xx. It has become my new favorite.

Posted by: jm01dc

Anyone that has direct experience with both phones? I'm still leaning towards the w810 just because its a candy bar and is great according to almost all users.

Posted by: hooked

Check this forum...at least for the v3xx there are many people giving their direct experiences with this phone. I haven't checked, but I'm sure there are some for the SE as well.

The wierd thing for me is that when I checked last week, the couple places I checked (Cing. store, Walmart) still weren't carrying the v3xx. I'm also interested in this phone.

Wirelessly posted (Walkguru's: MOT-RAZRV3xx/96.71.95R BER2.2 Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; 11063081) Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 Opera 8.00 [en] UP.Link/6.3.0.0.0)

great phone. i think.

it has the GoForce 4800 GPU by NVIDIA. The RAZR MAXX has the exact same processor for comparison.

Unless you need a decent camera or a good music player, I'd go V3xx.

Posted by: jm01dc

I know how good the v3xx is (I've read the threads on here), I'm looking for people who have used both phones. Thanks for the info.

Posted by: jm01dc

Man, cingular now has a $30 online rebate for the v3xx making it only $50 after rebates. Sooo tempting. I can't decide if I want to try a candy bar or not though.

Posted by: KingJ2002

i'd go with the v3xx due to the new moto ui and 3g support...

only place the v3xx falls is that it's a tri-band phone instead of quad band.

Posted by: steph280

I just found a $50 rebate for V3xx and $100 rebate for w810.

google "cingular v3xx rebate form" and look for the cartoys dot com link. Not valid for walmart purchses though.

If the w810i only had 3G....

jm01dc....I sent you a PM.....

Posted by: jm01dc

Mikiedreb gave a great analysis... I'm leaning towards the w810, but might get swayed towards the razr.

Posted by: mlm 0320

I hate my w810i.

I loved the UI and stuff like that blah blah, but the volume is TERRIBLE. The walkman is also buggy, give me that stupid BUZZ when changing volume, changing song, etc. It also has a very tinny, hissing sound to it. Locking up/WSOD isn't a rare thing either..

I am definatley going to get a v3xx very soon..

I've read your posts before, you had a buggy phone or something as you are one of very few with those problems. I'm pretty sure I'm gonna go candy bar style

Posted by: jm01dc

Well, I ordered the w810. I've almost had all flip phones, and want a change for once. Plus the razr is played out, and to me seems too fragile. I love the size of the w810, and the UI is supposed to be one of the best. Can't wait to get it!

Posted by: mlm 0320

Well, I hope you have better luck with it than I did. I really loved the phone, but couldnt get over the constant glitches and poor volume.

Posted by: SN707

I've had both and the xx is a great package.

I hope you love the 810 but your missing out.

Just goes to show "different strokes for different folks". For me the 3g alone would sway me, but I'm a sucker for 3g....lol

Posted by: mlm 0320

I have a w810i. It's a really great phone. Although, the volume is TERRIBLE. Others may disagree but IMPO it's just unacceptable. It's also glitchy. Those reasons are why I was going to return it until the salesman found the scratches on the back :bummed:

I love this phone, if it had better volume and worked out some of the glitches it would be a winner, but I am going to get a v3xx either tomorrow or Monday.

Posted by: jm01dc

You know I have a sync right now, I know all about 3g. While I'm at college, I'm in an EDGE only area and its fast enough. Someone who uses the 3g constantly on their phone and wnats a phone solely for that, needs to get a life lol. If I use internet, I'm either checking movie times, weather, google maps and maybe major news headlines.... all of which take little time to load with edge. Honestly, I love the internet on my computer, but I feel no need to have fast internet on my phone except for it being novelty, and maybe using it for tethering in certain situations. The other thing is I just wnat a change from a flip phone, the sync has made me not like how big they are when they're open.

The majority of w810 users love it, saying its their best phone ever with no serious mention of the earpiece volume. If its that bad, I'll flash it.

No experience with any RZR's

I currently own the W810i

If you get from cingular then it comes all junked up like a hp computer and has limited capabilities well not really but there is some limitations.

I recently debranded my phone with Davinciteam software and now my phone is a lot better. It gives access to all kinds of new themes and capabilities. Best change is the full themes/full mp3 ringtons, and no more medinet button(I have hit this button in class while phone was in my pocket and when I was down with class and checked my phone I spent about $5 worth of data fees.)

Note: you loose medianet and AIM type software when you debrand but you can easily download a 3rd party variation of it. Also you cannot download cingular games/ringtones etc.. but you can easily find all the free software you want if you just search for it.

I like the w810i because literally everyone I know has some type of generic flip phone or the plain v3RZR. I love the camera feel. It is as if I am using a real cyber shot camera just not as good only 2mp. I currently have a 40gig ipod that will be replaced when my 2gig memory stick arrives. The menus are very easy to manuever once you get the hang of it. The walkman menu is sorta similar to an ipod menu.

FM radio is a great feature. I will be honest and say the port to charge the phone and insert the headphone plug adapter are the same so if you try to balance the phone on a treadmill at the gym it can easily fall off if that makes sense. Another thing is that it does not support A2DP which I didnt think would matter but now im kinda wishing it had it.

I love being able to listen to mp3's and do everything else on the phone. (RZR may support this) From what I have seen so far the w810i is limitless when it comes to customization.

It is said that w810i suffers from drop calls but before and after debranding it I have not had any drop calls and Ive been talking like crazy on my new phone.

The phone hiss problem doesn't seem to bother me. If I try to listen for it I can notice it but after Ive been listening for awhile I can barely notice it except between songs when there is nothing else playing but that doesnt bother me may bother some. You can change settings around and it makes it sound even better so I wouldn't say thats much of a problem unless your a stickler for things like that.

I wish the camera had a lens cover but that is fixable by getting a K750 back piece and installing it about $15.

I am a big guy and have big hands so in that case the phone is semi small for me about the size of my wife's LG chocolate when it is not extended.

Overall it is an awesome phone with some flaws in it but the more I use it the more I love it.

Posted by: jm01dc

Yep I bought the w810, debranded it last night with phone xs flashing...

I love the phone, its just so cool. When I bought my sync, it was a good phone, but it didn't have the cool factor where I really liked my purchase. With the w810, I'm as happy as I could be. Debranding definitely increased the earpiece volume as well as ringtone volume. Not to mention you get johnny crash does texas! hahaha Losing the media net button which now is a shortcut button is also great (screw cingular for placing that so close to the key lock button).

The w810 is unique, it has a great UI, GREAT... and like kalikiano said, everyone has a flip phone, they're played out (I was ready for a candy bar). Its sort of how I viewed my sync, it was just another flip phone with a really good screen, but poorly designed menus and everything else.

I have no doubt in my mind I made the right decision.

Posted by: kalikiano

Forgot to mention I purchased my phone through amazon.com and Got the W810i for 49.99 plus $18.00 for overnight shipping. Plus I have a $100 mail-in rebate.

I was a little iffy on trusting amazon.com with cellphone/service but it went smooth and easy just like all my college text-book transactions that I do with amazon.com

I was torn between the KRZR K1 and the w810i when I was deciding because I like the look of the KRZR ( I think normal RZR's look dumb like the Motorola star tac that I had way back in the day)

Does the 3G make the RZR V3xx that good? I dont use the web on my phone that much besides weather/movies so I dont need the top speed for surfing but that may be a must for some for videos/music etc...

Posted by: jm01dc

My sync had 3g, yes its quite fast, but really pointless in my opinion, unless you're tethering your laptop to the phone and need an internet connection that way. EDGE is fast enough for me, and as far as videos and music... stick a 4gb memory stick duo in the w810 and watch and listen to everything you'd like!

w810

Posted by: kalikiano

Just found an awesome feature that my unbranded w810i has.

I installed a game that doesnt fit my phone so I couldnt see where the exit menu was so i started messing around and hit buttons well I hit the old medianet button and it goes to a screen that is like task manager on the PC. It shows current events(Text Messages etc..) Short cuts, and book marks. It shows the currently running applications and gives you a choice to end the application. This may be available on normal cingular w810i but I didnt know about it either way its pretty nice feature.

Posted by: jm01dc

Yeah I said that in my earlier post... "Losing the media net button which now is a shortcut button is also great (screw cingular for placing that so close to the key lock button)."

Apparently somewhere in adding UMTS 2100Mhz support and the nvidia chipset Motorola also dropped 850Mhz support. Does anyone have experience trying to use this phone in weak 1900Mhz areas?

From the Cingular website:

Quote:
Dual-band UMTS/HSDPA - 850/1900 MHz
Tri-band GSM world phone - 850/1800/1900 MHz

Why do people think the V3xx has UMTS 2100 and does not support 850?

Its not just the 3g that make it good. It is a completly different phone from the original V3. I am not going to type this much again. So here is my long winded post on the following thread.

Is there anyway to debrand the v3xx to some extent? Like for instance, get the pop3/imap email box back...

Posted by: steelernole

Walmart in Portsmouth, VA has the V3xx for $214 without activation and this was one of the higher priced phones. However, you do have to pay $25 for the sim card.

jm01dc.....which method of debranding did you use? Any specifics? I'd like to pump up the earpiece volume of mine...

thks...

This is a copy of a post I posted in another v3xx vs. w810i thread:

To break it down, the v3xx is better.

The w810i is a great phone. The screen was nice, the camera was excellent, and I did like the UI and the ability to install new themes and stuff easy..BUT the battery life was bad, the earpiece volume SUCKED, as did the volume while playing music.. It was also very little..

The v3xx, is amazing. I have not one flaw with this phone. The battery life is great, the signal is awesome, as well is the volume. I can always hear people (good call quality, and volume). The camera is good for a 1.3 mp, the opera web browser is amazing and the internet is FAST. The screen is AMAZING. It's one of the best screens I have seen. It is nice and bright, shows a lot of colors, high resolution, I'm almost certain it's QVGA. I haven't had one problem with the phone, as I did experience bugs with the w810i

(I have had the phone for more than 3 days like many who review phones, I've had it for over a month. )

Obviously from my mini review, I would pick the v3xx.

Posted by: franco1903

To Anyone out there contemplating this I have both phones. I had the V3xx for a month and a half and I have now had the w810i for a week. You simply can't make a bad choice between the two. I work for a cingular agent and I can say up until I had the w810i the v3xx was the best phone I ever had the experience of using. The voice recognition is amazing. The MP3 is surprisingly easy to use. Plus the recpetion is second only to maybe the w810i. Also, it is more durable than the other razrs. The 3g is nice if that's your thing but if not then no biggie. Battery life in 3g is abominable. The only thing I didn't like about the v3xx is the battery life being a bit on the short end. The camera isn't great but who buys a phone just for the camera? If thats the case then you want the w810i. The SE UI is a bit weird at first but I am adapting. The camera is amazing for a phone and I also like the music dj when I'm bored. The mp3 is great plus since I work there I got a pair of those promo speakers which are very nice for their size. I would say that those are the best two phones that cingular offers hands down. I have sold 20 w810's in the last month and when I do callbacks everyone loves their phone.
