How do techs for a GSM carrier provide tech support for foreign unlocked phones? If a customer has say some phone from Korea that's only available there and they have a problem, what do you do? I am in tech support for Verizon and since we know exactly what phones are allowed on the network, it's pretty easy.

As far as the phones go, as long as it is a gsm phone and has at least the 850/1900 frequencies on it, there is no problem. It's when it's missing the 850 that the phone may not work on the network properly. Also, we will assist them with the data service settings, but we make no promise that they will be able to connect to the data service. Plus, we advise that games or applications purchased from cingular will not work on the phone. If the phone has only the 2100 band, then it will not work at all.

You will be referred to the phone manufacturer. Tech support from Cingular only has limited access to phone settings for a foreign phone.
