iPhone doomed?

Check out my original thread for a little introduction:

Now, tack on some interesting info:

iPhone screen could infringe Sony Ericsson patent - http://www.mobilegadgetnews.com/ind...showtopic=13712

Quote:
Years ago Apple borrowed the GUI interface from Xerox PARC. Cisco says Apple borrowed the iPhone name from them. Now it turns out Sony has a patent on the clever screen feature that rotates the screen as the phone is turned from vertical to landscape mode. What is next for the "innovative" not so smart device ever created? It is good for Apple shareholders that they have a gaggle of attorneys. It would appear they are going to be very busy. Some factions in the industry have criticized Verizon for turning the Apple iPhone down, maybe not such a bad idea.

This is getting more interesting all the time.

Good, I hhope the iPhone gets canned. I ****ing hate the iPhone and the endless rants about it.

Posted by: Kid1972

I don't particularly like it either and don't find it's functionality too earthshattering. But Apple is known for usability and slick/easy interfaces. I was impressed by the demos I've seen. And most Windows Mobile nerds already know that feature-wise it doesn't do anything that Windows Mobile can't do.

I won't be getting one (I'm a windows mobile nerd) but I will be spending some time with it once my buddies get theirs. If I was an iPod guy, I'd probably be getting one.

Time will tell if it fails or not. I can't see that price point helping them any...

-K

p.s. I'm also real sick of the endless hype because Apple introduced another OK product.

I love how everyone is an expert yet no one has used one

hey, this is the greastest thing since sliced bread.

Posted by: Kid1972

I've only seen the demos, but I've read the propsed specs... I'm not impressed with e functionality...

...true, but it's no different than how everyone is an expert on whether VZW made the right decision on passing on this phone or that this phone will usher in millions of subs for Cingular. All statements make about the iPhone should include the word "potentially." No one knows if this thing will fail or succeed. It's like a draft. All these players get picked and everyone is declaring this or that player the next great hope or that this draft is thw best draft ever. Many of these same players either don't rise to their potential or drop out the league entirely, while some exceed/meet our expectations.

Posted by: Kid1972

If the phone were priced a little above media-centric phones, I think it would do very well. But 600 bucks?! Only time will tell if that was a mistake or not. Luckily, they have PLENTY of room to come down.

I personally think Cingular made a mistake to make the deal they did with Apple (based on Verizon's statement of what Apple wanted). But I'm not the US' largest carrier... what do I know?!

I agree, I had some sliced bread the other day, and it sucked. It's far more enjoyable to tear hunks off directly from the loaf!

Exactly what everyone else has said.

No one knows how this will do. It maybe be a little expensive, but people like the iPod, and therefore they will like this. So who knows.

All these companies are taking action because Apple is the one producing the phone. It some little company made this phone, and no one knew about it, then none of the companies would care. But since Apple is releasing this phone, all the companies are doing whatever they can to stop the release of this phone, because they KNOW it will THREATEN their phone business.

I am a fan of the iPhone, but I am also very sick of the endless rants of the Windows Mobile fans and so on, about this phone not being anything special, about how it was smart of Verizon to pass this phone, and how it will fail. They are all negative. They have no idea what this phone is going to be like. The release is several months of and the specs arent even know yet! Yet some people think they know everything, and talk negative. They need to stop! It is rediculous! When it is released we can talk about how good the phone is, and if it will fail or not. But that is several months away, and now is not the time!

Not true. These other companies are protecting what is rightfully theirs.

Cisco could care less if this phone is released. They just don't want it called the 'iphone'... since they OWN the copyright on that name, and have their own lineup of 'iphones'. I think you need to do a little DD.

Um... I think LG is actually MAKING the phone for them. This is why it looks amazingly similar to their ke850.

http://www.engadget.com/2007/01/11/...rated-at-birth/

And since we now know that LG will be making a Windows Mobile version of the phone as well, it should be REALLY interesting!

lol that's great.

The iPhone has been in development for a long time. You guys forget there was another less functional iconic phone that came out at the same pricepoint and did really well. I think iPhone will be the next big thing in phones. I mean look at all the media press it got! The iPhone will probably be the most popular cellphone in North America after its debut. HoFo users like you guys and I may not be the audience targeted with the iPhone.

Posted by: RyanM

I can honestly say I would love to try it out, possibly own it, depending what the price is after the hype...

Posted by: feverfive

Unlike some, I want iPhone to come and be successful...not b/c I am an Apple fanboy. heck, I don't even see myself getting one. But, w/ Apple in the mobile phone mix, it could foster design breakthroughs by all manufacturers. And the ubiquity of the Apple brand COULD lead to more consumer demand for design innovation....

Their pricepoint makes me question who exactly IS the target audience?

The beta units of the FCA GTA001/Neo1973 should be shipping soon (within the month) and I believe this may be the device that helps change the cell phone market. Better that the iPhone and 1/2 the price - oh yah, and open source.

I wonder the same exact thing. I guess we'll find out.

I would guess it's the same People who spent $5-600 on razrs when they came out, and they were a far worse price-to-value ratio than the iPhone. Or the persons in the SE forum who spend $700 on the new cybershot models on ebay when they come out? Or people who spend $400 on a treo and its antiquated OS and form factor? I believe the issue of price is grossly overstated when talking about the iPhone, as compared to other devices with similar price tags with less features to offer, or additional ones that most people could care less about. Granted, with this price its not meant to be a mainstream phone, but there are plenty of people who can and will purchase it. Probably not be but some. Just imho .

I agree. I've always said it too. I mean, what makes slice bread better than a loaf of bread? Who died and said, "...that's the best thing since sliced bread!"? Sometimes when I'm eating, I don't want slice bread, I want a big chunk of bread. So, that right there, tells you that slice bread is a bit overrated. I mean, the French prefer a loaf of bread rather then slice bread. The French may a knack for losing wars and have a reputation of being pansies, but their culinary skills are well-known. So, I hope that settles it.

MHm, I was going to write something about the iPhone, but I forgot....

there is a great editorial on this subject in this months maximum pc..it's a must read!

And with zero marketing (especially in the US) and basically zero knowledge about Neo in the US (other than these boards) its going to fail. Your average Joe doesn't care about open source, they just want their iphone because its cool, it syncs with their itunes seamlessly on and everyone is talking about it.

iPhone will have all the marketing support in the world, hype and the iPod platform to launch from. When the iPod came out these exact comments were made "what was apple thinking" "they will surely fail" etc etc. 6 Years later and....?

uh oh...

Meizu M8/miniOne closer to production, litigation

you're 100% correct on all aspects. I just think that the Neo is a long time coming and from what I gather from following the forums, may be successful. You know as well as I do that a lot of fanboys will hang out and post about it but when it comes to pulling the trigger and buying one and compiling for it, there will be less.

For those of us who flash a new ROM on our phone every couple of hours to test some hack we came up with, it will be cool novelty.

Even though it only supports GPRS at the moment, I'll pick one up to see what I can do with it. I think it's a great idea and hope they succeed.

As far as apple's 1st phone, I hope it does well. Whether it's successful or not doesn't stop me from buying my MS Mobile phones and can only encourage other manufacturers to offer new and better features (hopefully without matching their price).

from http://en.meizu.com/

Well, this company is based out of ZhuHai, China so I don't really see how litigation is possible. After reading a couple of threads about existing Cingular/AT&T customers having to wait several months into their contracts to upgrade to an iPhone, I actually kinda welcome this kind of competition. It may not make Apple happy, but at least everyone else who can't get an iPhone can get a Meizu MiniOne. I know I plan on waiting until Q4 2007, when a 16GB version of this phone will be released for $450 USD.
