Windows Mobile 6?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: ipodlover77

Well after reading it i started to wonder if they will let customers who bought phones like the blackjack, unlocked dash, etc before the release of mobile 6 upgrade to the newest platform. Is it even possible?

Posted by: michaelflorio82

It is up to the manufactures to create an update for existing phones. If WM5->WM6 is anything like WM2003->WM5, than chances are we wont get an "official" update for any existing devices.

Posted by: jevangil

The upgrades from WM2003 to WinMobile 5 did not happen because of hardware. WinMobile 5 was the first WinMob OS that required non-volatile memory for all data (system and user), as well as other OS upgrades (drivers and such). This is why you can remove the battery in the device and still have all of the data remain.

The upgrade path from WinMob 5 to 6 is just a software upgrade. The hardware specs remain pretty much the same.

Most reviews you see on the internet of anyone that has used it (crossbow) state that it is not much different than WinMob 5, just faster and better looking (there are other enhancements I have heard about).

This does not mean that there has not been a lot of new underlying code changes. As a matter of fact, most people who know about crossbow know it is supposed to integrate with Vista (probably Longhorn Server and Exchange Server 2007 also, when released) a lot better.

I have also seen some speculation on the web that the devices in the next few years may go to some type of embedded Vista OS.

The Dash supposedly has an upgrade coming for it, just a matter of when.

If they are gonna update the dash witch came out before the blackjack, i hope cingular (at&t) feel obligated to release an update to keep up with the jones as they say and as popular as the blackjack has been for cingular you would think they would want to keep their customers happy. The fact that most (not all) pay for the full pda data plan for around 40 dollars a month they would want those people to be happy and continue to pay all that money every month and recommend it to others. I personally tell at least 1-2 people every day when they see my phone how great it is and how fast and easy to use. If win mo 6 is supposed to make it faster and easier why not if it is just a software update or at least i hope someone at xda releases an upgrade off of the dash upgrade

That begs the question... if they DONT upgrade the device, would you become unhappy? Probably not. My guess is they dont upgrade to WM6, its just not cost effective and there is almost no upside for ATT in doing so... but i could be wrong

I would hope they would at least offer the upgrade for a small fee, but I'm probably going to end up being disappointed.

Posted by: custom875

According to this article on the homepage of phonescoop palm is expected to release a WM6 update for the treo 750.

Posted by: steph280

If the WM6 is really faster and more stable than WM5, I don't mind paying for upgrade.

Posted by: RoninCS

If paying is the only way to get the upgrade, I'll probably do it, but it won't make me happy.

I'm backing up my BJ now, and I'm going to give Crossbow a run either today or tomorrow, I think.

Posted by: b3p0

where is the DL for Crossbow on a blackjack? I havent seen any around.

Posted by: RoninCS

You have to look for it.

I'm not going to link where I got it, but it's out there.

Only information I can pull out of what I have w/o installing it:

[PLATFORM]=857873
[RADIO_TYPE]=2
[SECURITY_FLAG]=1
[DECODER_KEY]=1
[RADIO_FLAG]=2
[GETADDR_TYPE]=1
[JUMPCODE_TYPE]=1
[FORMAT_TYPE]=2
[SCREEN_TYPE]=2

Posted by: b3p0

uh, any reason you wont post the link? thier are wm6 versions for other phones all over these forums and xda developers..

Posted by: thekrush

There's a pic of a Treo 750 running WM6 posted here...

http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/ind...on=expand,53872

It remains to be seen if the early-birds can upgrade (but I'm hopeful at least)...

Posted by: AmbientNoise

As previously posted, updates for windows mobile 5 ---> 6 isn't dependent on the carrier but the manufacturer.

Sounds like you should have no problems finding it, then, eh?

Posted by: Gunner1

Just post the link then or PM those who are asking. I've searched all over and see no links here or on the 'web about a WM6 upgrade for the BJ.

So if it exists, share it already.

Posted by: ipodlover77

do u guys think it would be worth it to sell the blackjack right now, get some money out of it, then buy a newer version BJ when its released with Win6?

Posted by: mikemj23

I'd also like to see that WM6 link for the BJ.
Thanks.

Posted by: monkey28rb

they better launch it for the 8525

You won't because it doesn't exist.

The closest I could fine was
http://www.mobile-tech-today.com/st...id=0220025VOBKQ

Definately looks like WM6 on a Cingular branded Blackjack.

Me thinks you will be.

Come on folks, how many times have we been down this road? What was the first PPC/Phone combo launched, probably the SX66 that was running pocketpc2003. Since then we've had the MPX200, 220, SMT5600, Cingular 2125, the Ipaq lines, maybe im even forgetting a few. Did any of those have the ability to be upgraded via flash?...yes. Did any of them recieve a new upgraded OS for the feel good of it all?...nope. I think the cold hard reality is that Cingular runs what I think is the most stringent testing ship in the industry, so to release a flash upgraded OS to the masses is a pipe dream and highly unlikely based on previous models history with regards to these kinds of upgrades.

When they release WM6 for their service, it will be on a seperate device, you can count on it.

...but then again, I could be completly wrong hahahaha

Unless anyone wants to get permabanned I would advise against posting links to warez and copyrighted material to which you do not have authorization to distribute. (hint: WM6 would fit into this category)

Handle you business via PM and not on the threads, and no post saying "PM me this or that".

Their about ready to launch the new ROM update for it, I highly doubt they'd do a WM6 update right after.

Posted by: irockash

Also on phonescoop right now, it says TMobile will have an OTA update for the Dash in Q2... it seemed like a pretty confident statement.

Posted by: WirelessPPC

wm6 is not all that better. like the previous post stated the icons are better and menu lil quicker. it is probably more about bragging rights.
I share all my wm6 versions with people from the clean wm6 to pdaviet wm6 versions but its for the mda. I will locate the wm6 for the bj cause I have access to this vietnamese site that has just about everything cause we are asian and we don't care about copy rights and bootlegging stuff.

LOL "We are asian and we dont care about ethics or law"...

I think we are going to get more devices updated then people think. For one this brings costs down to the manufacture to release a "software update" vs a whole new device with WM6. They may after the update is out ship all new devices with WM6. This will basically give the manufacture a large scale beta test of the OS before a new device is released. I think the big one that will decide release will be the corporate environment. With Exchange 2007 and companies moving to Vista. Samsung and others they are going to want to keep them very happy.

Think about that. You are saying they'd rather sell one device and a free upgrade... rather than selling two devices. Doesnt make sense!! Manufacturers do not "dread" making a whole new device to sell, that is the business they are in and its how they make money.

I do agree that they *should* do it to keep people happy. Personally i dont expect my 8525 to be upgraded for free-- this way i can only be pleasantly surprised if they do and not disappointed. I dont buy a device in this day and age without expecting it will be obsolete in 6-12 months.

Which is one of the reasons I didn't post mine (I actually got mine from a mobile manufacturer..my company works in mobile phones, in addition to PC and console), but I did happen to find it in a few different locations.

Note that I never said this was specifically for the BJ...still haven't installed it yet, either (and from what I know, it's probably not going to work).

Posted by: WirelessPPC

very limited information on leaked version for smartphones at this point.

Sorry if you thought it was directed at you, it was for everyone.

Well, even if we have WM6 for the Treo 750, the Treo won't be able to support 320x320 anyway, right?

As for availability on Cingular. We don't need to worry about Cingular "stringent" testing processes. Just do a custom ROM and be done with it??? But what's the point of that if we can't get 320x320 out of it?????? Ugh...sigh

It really doesn't matter. Even though the Treo doesn't support 320x320, WM6 still supports 240x240 so WM6 should be able to be installed on the 750.

Posted by: FDNYPD

Hmmm...well, the main attraction to me IS the resolution. What are the other benefits? I briefly read them on palm's website. I remember better Vista support but there are a few others. The screen res is the most important one for me.

Another website is also saying that Palm will be coming out with another Treo 750 or replacement or whatever for the Treo 750 specifically. That sounds promising. But WHEN? It seems kinda silly JUST releasing the 750 and two weeks later announce another 750 with WM6. Anyone have any ideas?

Posted by: b3p0

there are more enhancements than just resolution-- mainly in outlook, etc. Do a search on crossbow and you will see the main upgrades. MS didnt just make higher resolution a reason for a new version of thier os.

Posted by: Gunner1

It's really too bad we won't see the upgrade for the BJ. The improvements in battery life would possibly be sufficient to allow the standard MS Bluetooth implementation to be restored to the device.

Then again, Samsung doesn't give a crap about users who shelled out hundreds for one of their high end handsets.

you know, I wouldn't be so defeating on this. Samsung has a history of providing upgrades for its flagship phones, they provided WM5 for the i730 which was a substantial difference from WM2003 SE then WM6 is to WM5.

The blackjack is Samsung's hottest selling phone, they have proven that they have provided upgrades in the past, and frankley we have not heard a word from Samsung so until they say NO we will not provide an upgrade, I am going to keep my hopes up

Have any Cingular phones gotten Samsung upgrades? The reason that I ask this is that Cingular has one of the most rigorous and laborious QA processes in the industry.

Even if Samsung released an update Cingular would have to decide if they would want to release it to their customers, Cingular might not want to spend the thousands of dollars testing the new FW as well as the liability of bricked phones that have to be replaced.

None of the Samsung phones on Cingular have had Windows Mobile on it until the Blackjack and I find it hard to believe that Cingular had a more rigorous testing schedule then Verizon.

Like I said, I am choosing to be a little more optimistic based on the history that Samsung has released upgrades to WM devices in the past with carrier support. I am also a realist and understand that if an upgrade is to come, it won't be released until June or later (just my best guess). I bet it will take 6+ months for Samsung to create the image and for Cingular to test it and set up the support network for it.

Also don't forget my earlier post that has a link to a picture that shows the Blackjack with WM6 on it. If the picture is real, then it shows that Samsung has already created some sort of WM6 rom.

Posted by: FDNYPD

Yea, the difference from WM5 to WM6 is probably like XP to XP Service Pack 2. The resolution ALONE would be enough for me to want it, though.

Posted by: b3p0

yea, i dont think most US smartphones/PPCs support 320x320 resolution in hardware. So if you mainly want the resolution, you will probably have to wait for a new phone as opposed to upgrading... most phones have 320x240 screens or lower.

I AM ASIAN BUT I DO CARE ABOUT BOOTLEGGING IF IT HURTS THE PRODUCER FINANCIALLY !

ROMS DO NOT HURT THE PRODUCERS AS YOU HAVE TO SELL IT IN A DEVICE. BOUGHT DEVICES CANNOT BE RENDERED ABSOLUTE IF THERE IS STILL LIFE IN THEM. IF YOU HAVE A DEVICE TAKE IT TO THE MAX AS YOU PAID FOR IT AND SHOULD BE ABLE TO EXTEND IT'S USEFULLNESS !

MORE POWER TO THE CONSUMER !

Oh BTW: THE UNDERGROUND ROM is the best out there right now for wizards. PDAViet3 is better than PDAviet4 if anyone should want to know what I think about these ROMS.

Posted by: WirelessPPC

I'm using PDAViet4, downloaded Underground Rom yesterday. Maybe I should give it a shot.

Posted by: trjons

I am NOT interested in WM6 so if someone out there has it, or a link to it, please DO NOT PM it to me.

Posted by: txschafers

I hope they make WM6 available as an update to current 750 owners. It seems odd to roll out the phone on January 9th and a little over a month later start talking about a WM6 Treo. Since Dash owners are going to get an upgrade to WM6 I bet/hope Cingular 750 owners are as fortunate.

Posted by: i835 chirp

With the upcoming ROM for the 8525 I highly doubt WM6 will be released anytime soon; at least not "officially". It has been leaked all over the place for a few devices, none for Hermes. You honestly never know, but I do believe it will be more of an Underground Update then anything, the official versions will be on new Pocket PC's yet to be released, certain advantages of the 8525 could've been upgraded on the 8125 but a new device came out instead; I believe it'll be the same deal here OFFICIALLY.

Posted by: FDNYPD

Anyone have ANY idea as to when WM6 will be released???
