why is that?

The iDEN network is being phased out by the looks of. Sprint has been migrating legacy NEXTEL users to their PCS side of the network, its just a matter of time before Telus does the same with MiKE.

2010 is when the phase is suppose to be complete.

From everyone I talk to, there will be NO new IDEN Blackberry units, none. As Sprint moves people onto the hybrid phones, the IDEN system will lack the numbers to develope a new handset

I had thought that bewteen Mike and Southernlinc, there might be an impetus for new handsets. But I see now that Southernlinc didn't even get the 7100i until November of '06, over a year behind everyone else. And they're touting it as this revolutionary new phone.

Way to be behind!

Nope... GSM is the place to be for the latest Blackberries.

It is sad for IDEN, I was with them for 8 years. I remembered when Sprint took them over it was made to look like a friendly merger, some even thought that Nextel would rule over Sprint. Sprint owns NExtel and is slowly putting them down like a old horse.

No offense, but I don't know anyone who would have thought that Nextel would be the dominant player. From day one, Sprint Nextel looked a lot like DaimlerBenz buying Chrysler: lots of lip service given to being a "merger of equals" but Benz (and Sprint) was clearly the buyer and Chrysler (Nextel) the entity to be bought.

And then there's the issue of iDEN in general. The network was very inefficient and crowded to begin with, and then the public service agencies began crying foul over interference issues, sparking the impetus for rebanding. Clearly Nextel, despite haaving a strong financial position and broad user base, needed an out due to the serious technical issues it would soon face.

Really? Can you give us details? Is it an iden-only device, or is it hybrid?

I want details, but I doubt it.
