The Nokia e90. The end of series 80?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: SymbianBlack

On paper the e90 seems to outshadow all of the the e series and 9000 series models, it even sheds the series 80 platform for symbian 9.x...... Is series 80 dead as we know it? Or do we need a press release like the ngage?

Posted by: wierdo

It's dead, Jim.

(If Nokia releases an e90 with US 3g, I will pay almost any price they ask, it makes me salivate that much)

Yes Dead..... more software with ease not to mention firm upgrades (You gotta love that). I agree LOL this is a major upgrade in my opinion from the S80's and I am willing to buy it as soon as it hits the stores. Finally you will be able to share the Internal UI to the external one. That alone is a major plus (Just think T9, Surf the net not having to open it, and a vibrate.). All of this on a symbian communicator has all been unheard of prior to this release of the E90. I might add at that if they added a hard-drive to later models like the U.S release It would just top the charts. It's about time that Symbian has something that truely goes head to head with the Windows platforms. In my experience the Symbian platform conserves power while the Windows (not hating just my opinion) really abuses it.

S80 is dead - I dont remember seeing an official announcement, however I read in several places that since the new version of symbian is not 'compatible' with previous versions, so the few apps that were created for the S80 would not work with a symbian 9.x version of S80 - so in addition to going through the effort to update the S80 for symbian 9.x, all developers will need to re-release their apps. The user base for S80 is small compared to S60. in the end I think nokia made the best decision, but I really think I will miss the 4 buttons on the right hand side. If apps could be reworked to 'know' which screen they are displaying, this could allow for a different menu structure :-)

Posted by: Prom1

That would involve re-writting the entire OS beyond the ready to ship v9.2 - the whole structure would need to change yet again. Apps interface with the OS the OS supplies the know how not the apps. besides OS 9.2 allows for a 3rd softkey. SO you're hopes are not too far off.

I like the e90, but I don't think its leaps ahead of its N series cousins or the E61/i. The OS being the same on the front and inside is cool, but is a design necessity and not really an "innovation" Basically I am thinking if the e61i and e90 had the same form factor, would I pay the (estimated) $300- 500 difference?

A friend of mine pointed out that while S80 devices were underpowered and didn't have a lot of software, it used its software well and the new S60 on the E90 seems a bit .. "out of water". Because it's a one size fit all option I figure the screen will never "really" be used except during movies and web surfing, and while that is cool, I think it could have been done so much better.

I might just be griping for no reason, but I am curiously doubtful that S60 on a communicator device will be a better experience than S80 on a communicator device (bells and whistles aside)

The one place where the screen size on the S80 phones is a huge win for me is when using an ssh client. Getting a reasonable 24x80 character screen on something like an E70 or E61 makes the characters way too small.

This probably isn't a concern for most people.

The fact that the 9300 and 9500 are so underpowered actually makes them a pretty poor choice for web browsing. The web browser's ability to render becomes the performance bottleneck (rather than the speed on EDGE). So while the screen size is nice for web browsing it doesn't really work out well.

As other's have pointed out. I don't think the death of the S80 is really a big deal. The transition to S60v3 from S60 required new software anyway. The transition to Symbian 9 will require new apps anyway, and we'll have a large pool of apps to choose from when the E90 comes out. The S80 interface actually looks like the old Psion/EPOC interface. It's a good interface, but the S60v3 interface is also pretty good, and I'll be happier anyway with the software selection.

Same here. I just wish I could run all those Linux command line apps natively.

To me, the perfect phone would look just like the 9300, but would run Linux.

No problem getting apps then! Put that keyboard to use!

Actually to me the raised keys of the E90 remind me VERY much of the Psion 5x.

STill not enough apps on Linux for phones & their yet still limited memory allocation. I think you're refering to shells or small patches/yums (OpenSSH, OpenSSL, etc) as apposed to a full blown app like an audio ripping application.

I had a PDA running Linux for a while (Zaurus). It wasn't bad. Something like the Zaurus built into a GSM/UMTS phone would be very nice. I don't think it would be all that popular though.

Windows Mobile may be marginal stability-wise, but it provides people with the features they generally want, plus in North America you don't have any other choices in a UMTS capable PDA/phone combo. Good integration with the Microsoft tools (Outlook/Exchange/Office) tops many people's feature list.

I'm not talking about apps made specifically for phones. And I have no need for an audio ripping app on my phone.

Here is a pic of the command line on the Nokia N800.

There are thousands of very powerful (aka full blown) applications for the Linux command line. I could compile any of them for the N800 if I had or wanted one.

If I could use the same apps on my phone as my desktop, it would be trivial to sync the data between the computer and the phone. Apps also run much faster without the overhead of the GUI.

Too bad the N800 doesn't have a nice keyboard like the 9300...
Too bad the 9300 doesn't run Linux like the N800.

Either one would satisfy my desire.

EXCELLENT!

Now I understand. Well seeing how you very literate in Linux (mind you I STILL say not enough respect is given the the Sharp ZAURUS 5500 lineup as it was truely the first shipping Linux mobile device smaller than a laptop) why don't you form a group and all pitch in to purchase an E90 and put a sweet Debian (Ubuntu ?) Linux GUI with Terminal (oops sorry thats Mac) ahem I mean Command Line parser within for external or Internal usuage?

I'm sure you & your colleagues would be quite satisfied.

Posted by: spiritraveller

Nokia already uses Linux on the N800, so I think that they will eventually make what I want.

I don't even know if what you are talking about is feasible, as I can't even upgrade the firmware on my 9300 without taking it to a dealer.

I also think the Zaurus looks good. But it seems that none of the really cool devices are sold in the US.

This might even cause me to give up my blackberry. I had a symbian phone a while back in between blackberries, treos and WM phones. It was sluggish and did not perform well as a phone (SE910) but I loved the stability of the platform. US 3G is the hinge for me as well.

Just wondering a little bit here do any of you guys think nokia will make a S60 software ported for the 9000 series? I know they are ending the s80 series however if they are doing so I must say I think they need to leave those customers with something other than a outdated machine. I think the support for the unit it self has been DISAPPOINTING from the start. Before I sell this device and get maybe an $150.00 for it I think Nokia should step up and offer somewhat of an updated rom. By all means the new E90 looks awesome however inorder to keep me as a valued customer don't leave stranded with nothing. Yes I do plan on getting the E90 but for that price it will have to come down some before it happens. All I am asking for an updated rom to run s60 instead of the dead s80 system. Nokia in the mean while give us an rom with new features before we up that much money on another device; so that we can still use the current device....

Probably won't get much for my 9300, but when the E90 comes out I doubt I'll ever open it again. I do love that keyboard tho. Hoping the e90's is as good. My 9300 will then indeed be dead. IMO.....

i guess, this section of the forum will be closing soon..

i hope soooon.. waiting for the E90 desperately.

Posted by: cbreze

Hey Yesh, I see your waiting also for the E90. It seems that us S80 folks will maybe be the biggest fans of the E90 and the larger form factor. Those who are perhaps not used to using one of the communicators may not cuddle up to the E90 quite as fast. It is an acquired taste for this style of form factor I think. I`ve always thought the ultimate device would be my 9300-b with the s60 nokia browser. I`m hoping the E90 will be it. Oh, to just have tmo 3g on it would be the ultimate, ultimate device...waiting on the E90 waitin` , waitin`, waitin`.......And yea, I think the s80 section of the forum has been dying a slow death. The E90 will be the end of it.

i too am pumped about the e90. i sold my 9500 a few months ago and i have been longing for something similar for quite some time now.

early showings of the n95 showed a product that was incredibly fast and looked pretty much ready to ship. Then we waited for 6 months +

I am wondering if the e90 will be the same way?

I mean we haven't even heard from the e61i and that was just a camera upgrade...

Posted by: cbreze

At least the e90 is on nokia web site and being shown. I haven`t been following the n95, so don`t know when that went up on the site. A nokia tech I spoke with said the time frame is typically 2 > 3 months release after it`s up on the site. His .02 cents and this is of course worthless info as it will be available when it`s available. We can certainly speculate tho. Something to do while we wait.

yea, thats been troubling me as well. hopefully, we wont have the tremendous wait like we are experiencing with the N95. i really really really want this phone. it is speculated to release during Q2 of this year so im guessing that it will release towards the end of the quarter like the N95 has.

Posted by: YESH

i dont know. But from what i have heard, a lot of people are running around with proto types.

i say this, coz my dad called and told me he wanted the E90. He thought it was out coz a few people got the protos
