The Official Samsung SCH-U740 "Alias" Thread

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: chemicalhero

Since the phone was released today, I figured I'd start this. Feel free to post any pictures and thoughts on this phone if you already have it.

Posted by: sparky12

Just picked mine up...about to activate and take some pix.

Posted by: sparky12

Snapped a pic from my KRZR on the way home...the charger doesn't appear to be USB (people may know that already) so I guess I'll need to get another car charger.

I can do a side-by-side with the KRZR, 7130e and a 700p if anyone is interested.

Posted by: MCASPE1

Just got mine. Fooling around with it now. Will let everyone know what I think later. So far, nice phone. takes a little to get used to the keyboard. takes great pics. Mp3 player is integrated with the vcast music. You can load your own mp3 music onto a microsd card without a problem and music plays through the vcast player. great call sound with speaker and headset. very nice so far.

Glad it's finally out...hopefully my requirements will be covered with this one as I need a phone badly.

Can't find an on-line user manual, so maybe you new users can answer:

1. Does it sync (calendar and contacts) with Outlook on a PC?
2. Does the contact list include addresses, or just phone/email?

If it has these covered, the rest is gravy....let's hear those reviews!

Mark

Posted by: KeilwerthSX90R

I'm thinking about running out and getting one at lunch time. This may have been answered in the Pre-release mega thread and I ask it about all new phones but are you able to view text messages on the outside screen?

Also, sparky being a fellow KRZR owner how would you compare the two in feel and sturdiness? Is the U740 easy to flip open with one hand - how's the hinge?

Thanks,
Josh

From what I can tell so far is that it supports Wireless Sync so you should have email, calendar and contacts. I'm about to add an email account so I'll follow up with more info. The contacts app supports multiple contact numbers and two email addresses but I don't see an address field.

Does the mini-USB data cable allow it to charge while connected via USB?

Also, is there a headphone jack or is it only BT?

Thanks for the pic!

Thanks. I wonder why this is such a rare feature.

A few questions...

-Compatibility with bitpim.
Can BitPIM view the filesystem?
Can BitPIM read/write contact info using another phone selection under options?

Can you Email Ringers to the phone?
Can you set those ringers as actual ringtones?
Does this phone have MY SOUNDS?
Can you set MY SOUNDS as ringtones?
Can you put ringtones on a microSD card and set them as ringers, either as Sounds or Ringtones.

Does DUN/Bluetooth dun work using the trick with the Qualcom Service programming porogram?

Does the a950 PST work with this phone?
Can you enable the hidden GIN menu to edit WAP settings?

What does this phones hidden menu contain? Go to settings and tools-> hit the star key, and enter all zeroes as the password.

OK, I think those are all the question I have so far.

I sent myself a test SMS and couldn't figure out how to view it on the front screen - that may be where the ENV has an advantage. There may be something in the user manual but who reads those?!?!

Compared to the KRZR, the u740 doesn't feel quite as solid. It seems that the KRZR has a metal frame (I may be wrong) while the Samsung has a little more plastic. The hinge is good but there is a little movement when closed but it doesn't seem to be a lot. Personally, I'm willing to sacrifice the feel to have the keyboard.

Wow. Yeah, that's pretty much the perfect list of questions. If there are affirmative answers to most of them, I'll be getting the u740 this afternoon.

Actually, it appears there is a single connection that supports power and headphones - pretty cool really. The included adapter connects into the phone and has multiple connections on the other end - standard headphone jack, proprietary headphone jack and a power connection. I don't see any USB connection other than on one of the connectors that shows a power icon and USB icon. I'm wondering if there is another accessory USB adapter.

Here goes...

As far as bitpim goes, I have no idea yet. I've never messed with that app before so I can't comment yet.

I sent myself an email to the XXXX@vzwpix.com with an mp3 attached to it. It saved the file to My Sounds but I can't seem to use it as a ringtone.

I havne't tried to put a file on the memory card yet but will shortly.

As far as BT DUN, this profile is supported native on the phone so I don't see a workaround as necessary, unless I'm missing something.

I'm not familiar with PST so I'll defer to someone else on that one.

The hidden menu shows...

ESN
AKEY
Network Settings
Slot Cycle Index
Service Programming C

Whatever the hell that means

Sorry I can't answer all the questions but this is really my first Samsung and I'm not too familiar with the mods yet.

Ask away if there is anything else...

Same thing here...strange.

Give it time for Get It Now to be updated.

Whats the UI like? Standard Verizon red bars, or a flash ui?

Posted by: sparky12

There are several themes, one of which is the standard VZW UI. They are called My Desk, Amoeba, Rainbow, Business (VZW Standard) and Tropical.

Posted by: Baldilocks

Why no QVGA display on a phone with all of these features?? Just wondering......

This is a simple app that lets you update contacts/ringtones on supported phones. Although the u740 probably isn't supported yet, sometimes if you set it to another similar phone, such as the a930 or a950, some of the features will work in bitpim.

As far as DUN,
http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=938352
There are direction on making it happen. You will need a datacable and driver.

As far as the a950 PST... the PST is a program verizon people have at the store for updating the phone and doing some other things. One thing you can do on the a950 is enable a hidden menu that lets you change WAP settings (to get free mobile web) Look at this thread,
http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=910774

Although this is not for the u740, some things that the a950pst does still may work on the u740.

All above requires a datacable and a driver. I don't know how many of you have datacables so here is another thing you can try.

http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=1010210
CHeck out this thread and try to enter some of those numbers on your phone, and see if anything happens. This could lead to free wap or some other things.

Also if someone can go to settings and tools, hit the # key, and enter all zeros as pass... tell us what you see in there.

The stuff I found was what I listed before...ESN, etc. Is that what you were looking for? I didn't go into the submenus though.

As far as BT DUN, if the profile is supported, wouldn't it utilize the EVDO connection?

There are 2 different hidden menus. You already did the STAR key one *.
I am now asking for the NUMBER key one #.

Voice SO
Port Map
Force Mode
Pref Mode
Clear Session
Throughout Test
Bluetooth
SATS Mode
Graphics
Trouble Shooting

Try putting autoview on. It works on the 990, so maybe all Sammy's have it?

I've had excellent reception with my moto E815 and also during my seven days of using the VX8600 -- does anyone with a new u740 have a similar set of comparisons (different manufacturer's phones previously, Samsung u740 now) who could comment on reception?

Cheers.

If anyone uses Navigator, does the application close when the phone is flipped shut or does it still remain active with a less detailed map on the outside LCD?

This is a phone that I hadn't been waiting for, but now I'm intrigued. Can someone please educate me on the key differences between this phone and the Treo 750 in terms of funcationality?

Posted by: AuroraBorealis

cant wait to see pics of the themes on this thing...also i thought i read this phone was supposed to have a2dp...am i getting this mixed up with the vcast tv sammy comming out? Overall I actually like the look of this phone

Posted by: FAUguy

For those who now have the U740, can you please take some pics with the phone's camera upload them?

Posted by: 91ZCpe

Hey I just picked up the U740 this morning before school. I'm getting used to it right now. The only thing I don't like about it so far is the outer screen is too small and can't view the texts on the outside. The menu (My Desk) is nice, but the menus seem to lag a little.

I took a couple pics on my digital camera, but I couldnt figure out how to make the pics less blurry? Its somewhat hard to read the numbers/letters and see the themes. But I hope you enjoy.

Posted by: MxChino79

I'm really digging the looks of this phone. I'm switching to verizon and having a hard time deciding between this and the enV. If anyone has had both, what do you prefer and why?

Posted by: GuyinLACA

is the blue theme "amoeba"? Also, what do the other two themes look like, ("rainbow" and "tropical" are on the list).

Posted by: AuroraBorealis

i like the desktop theme for some reason looks nice and clean

yep, this is amoeba. its not to bad.

the rainbow, business, tropical are the standard vzw ui, except with differnt colors on the top and bottom. i really dont care these that much. i think that my desk is the nicest looking one on the phone.

i traded in my plagued 8600 for this phone. i would have been on my 4th 8600 if i would have kept it. i hope this samsung doesnt give me any problems.

did u trade it in under th 15 day worry free

wow this is nice.

Posted by: Baldilocks

There is a nice little program called mSnap that will let you take pictures of your actual phone display.
I'm not sure if they work with Verizon phones.. but I have had luck with my V3xx (Cingular).

Posted by: Djricorich

Just a little fyi the speakerphone function goes automatically on when your phone is opened in landscape mode and you dial someone
, and also i found out that when the phone is closed after dialing in landscape mode the speakerphone still works.
weird but cool nonetheless.

Posted by: SK8ERboy

guys, more pictures and comparisons!!! lol thanks

does anyone know if it would be compatible with the hopke proxy? it meets all the requirements....

One more quick question for the new u740 owners, is there a manner-mode key that switches to vibrate or is it like the A990 / KRZR where you have to open the phone and just turn the volume all the way down?

Thanks

I was wondering the same thing as I love that feature on my Razr and thus far it looks as only opening and turning down. NOT that big of a deal but definitely a bummer. I haven't read the book either though LOL

Put your camera to Macro mode which there is a button in the menu or on the camera. Its usually a flower Icon.

Now macro mode will work much better but if u get to close it will make the pictures blury. Just take it so that its clear and we can zoom in but not to far away. Macro mode works from about 8cm or less depending on your camera. So you can get the details of everything.

BTW what camera you got?

nope, i bought my 8600 on nov. 15, 07 and had problems with the phone. I was going to get my 4th one on Tues, but decided to go with this Samsung. I had to pay an extra $63 instead of $20, so I'm working on getting my $43 back....

I have the Canon Powershot A610. Its a nice camera, just needs an experienced photographer to use it...

Posted by: wilson10

soooooo, can anyone help someone totally new to Samsungs out? I have no idea what to do as far as at least getting my contacts transfered to my phone. The VZW store did not have the cable they needed and never thought to ask to use the one in the essentials kit I bought (not sure that would have worked anyhow) So it took a long time to get at the door and it almost pissed me off.

I have a data cable, I have bitpim but it will not recognize the phone. I am not even worried about ringtones yet as I just want my contacts. Thanks

Posted by: SK8ERboy

any enV u740 comparisons.. any comparison images?

Posted by: wilson10

setting autoview to on in my text settings worked to get them to show on front screen. Thanks!

Posted by: mbaverizon

with the ringtones on the A990 would only work in my sounds with a memory card, has anybody tried that?? i then sent them to 000000000@vzwpix.com

How can you get the external LCD to light up without opening the phone?

I press all of the keys and none of them turn on the LCD. I just want to view the time without opening the phone.

Also, when making calls, the screen goes dark...any tips on fixing that?

I did switch the txt msgs to Autoview, thanks for that tip!

I looks like when the phone is opend normaly ro dial a number, the keybad is backlit blue, but when opened sideways, the keybad is backlit white.
Does it change backlight colors or does it just look like that in the pictures?

Also, tomorrow, please take some pictures with the phones camera outside.
There are now some pics posted by the PN-820, and the camera looks to be low quality.

This and the ability to add mp3 ringtones to individual caller IDs makes me unwilling to trade up until I know for certain this sammy phone can do both without outside software.

How loud are the speakers on the phone? compared to the vx9900? because the phone i got now is louder then the old ver. of the 9900

I thought I heard somewhere that Verizon had data transfer limits that precluded the use of slingbox over the network.

Posted by: sparky12

Here's a few comparison pics. One thing I really don't care for is that the phone faces out when it's in the Verizon holster and the flip is exposed as well. I like the KRZR holster that faces inwards a little better.

Posted by: dmxsoulja3

5gigs a month is the data limit, you can achieve a good picture at about 160kbps, so figure that up..its alot of view time. so if you just view for 30 or so mins a day every now and then when your sitting waiting somewhere you'll have no problems at all and still have room for browsing and such.

Posted by: 91ZCpe

i have some more new pics, better quality i think. sorry for the last ones that were not as good.

i have a couple pics of the U740 and the old Samsung A670

So many that it isnt even funny!!! I was so used to where the clr hey was on my motos.

Posted by: sparky12

What's funny is when you're typing in landscape mode and the letters that are also the 1-9 keys make one sound and the rest of the keys make another. I've had to look twice at the screen to make sure I wasn't getting some kind of error.

Someone mentioned voice dialing earlier - this phone has the Voicesignal app.

Posted by: TurboD

Another way to turn on external screen to check time is to just hold down the volume button for a couple of seconds until the screen lights up, same way the a950 worked. I tried to put ringtones (.mid's) in my_sounds folder, but they do not show up in the list. I figured it wouldnt be as easy to get ringtones as my a950, hopefully someone figures that out soon, as it is far above my abillities.

i sent a text using voice commands to my wifes phone earlier. Not sure how much I will use such a feature but how cool is that. I have never done that on any other phone I have owned (all motos) I am loving this phone even though I don't have any rings, music or contacts on it yet LOL.

My only problem is I'm a secondary on a family share plan with 7 months to go before we renew the contract and I get the two year price (no ne2 for me =( ) So do you think it is worth paying the full retail (319.99 w/ no rebate?) or should I wait 7 months and pay 150? Just to let you know I have a audiovox 8910 now and I'm kind of tired of it.

And can someone post some pictures of this phone next to an enV?

I just pick this phone up from the local Verizon store. So far I'm impress with the call and feature functionality. The QWERTY and menu is a bit arkward compare to my old LG-VX8600. Nevertheless, it's worth the wait. So here's my dilemma. My old broken RAZR paired up with my Motorola BT H-700 and call quality was superb. Though the LG-VX8600, everyone complains that my voice sounded muffled. When trying to pair up with the Samsung SCH-u740 and Moto H-700 headset. Each time I hit the call button on the headset. The phone recognize the signal and goes to voice command. Thing is all I hear is static through the headset and sometimes the voice goes through the speakerphone. I tried deleting the headset from the phone and re-pair it serveral times. All of which with the same negative results.

I know it's not the headset because it work flawlessly withe LG VX-8600 and RAZR. Just not working with the Samsung.

surprisingly...im in the exact same boat. im gunna try Ebay, but i dont know wether to get the Env or the u740.

I went to my local VZW store today and got to check out this bad boy. I liked everything about it and was very close to getting it but that gold/champaigne color , even the sales rep told me that they should have went with a different color. So verizon ppl, please release this phone in different color and watch the sales go up .

For now I can only hope that they'll answer the prayers and release one in different color soon, or drop the price of a990 to like $199 with a 2 year contract.

Posted by: wilson10

personally I think the EnV is a brick. Its nice and all for what it is, but that thing is huge imo. Now granted once the u740 is opened it is longer, but its more then half the depth. I love the size of this phone. Its going to take me awhile to get used to texting on it but I have had that problem with every new phone and after a few days it all comes natural. You should really go to a store and check them both out. If that means waiting a week then so be it. Thats a lot of change to drop on a phone to just not like it!!!

Posted by: edd0e

as far as the gold color is concerned .. if you have the full coverage insurance, couldn't you ideally pull that cover off, paint it a color, and put it back on?

and if something were to happen to the phone (either during painting it or after the fact) where you needed to get it replaced, just pay the $50 deductible, rinse and repeat? I'm sure it's a bit of a hassle of getting the gold piece off, but wouldn't that be an alternative? or are there restrictions that the phone needs to be "untampered" with, aside from physical/accidental damage?

i second that!!!...all black or dark gray would be AWESOME.....was samsung on crack when they decided on this color or what? i just cant understand how anyone could think this would sell better than silver or black??? thats the ONLY reason im not buyin the phone.

Picked it up 1 hour ago. Much to my chagrin it appears you cannot out of the box use MP3 ringtones. hopefully there is a way around this as I will certainly return the phone if it can't use my mp3s. My e815 had about 50 MP3s movie/tv clips that I used for ringtones and I simply can't imagine living with a phone that doesn't have distinctive ringtones.

FWIW, Verizon's pay-for-ringtones BS will not float with me. I use sound clips, not generic music.

otherwise, it seems like a decent phone.

This is my first time around vcast, btw, & it sucks. Majorly. Is evdo always this slow?! I love the concept of mobile web but if it takes 1 minute to load each page, it's worthless.

Posted by: bgdc

Why do people care about the color? It's a phone. When not in use it's in my pocket. Shrug. It could be pink and I still would have bought it for the feature set/design.

Posted by: ii krossfire ii

I dunno but I want mine... I have been patiently waiting since November I think, Customer care said it would ship on launch, and wola I call today and they tell me its still not available WTF!!! I want to get rid of my ENV so I can put my keys in my pocket again LOL... SOmeone mail me their 740!!!

Cell phones aren't just phones anymore, on top of the camera, pretty screen and different HIDs, etc. they're also a fassion accessory. Come to think of it, they've been a fassion accessory ever since the StarTacs..

i would really like to see the enV comparison too. im not gonna leave my pretty enV brick, but i want to see how they stack up to each other.

It should be just as fast as the EVDO on your old E815.

I traded in my one-week-old VX8600 for the u740 and I like it a lot so far. I couldn't be bothered about the color, it's prolly gonna end up in a case anyway (if I can find one w/o leather, which is a trick.)

It looks like the "USB" data connection isn't standard mini-USB. Anyone used this yet? Is it yet another proprietary data cable? Ah well.

I was able to get Mac OSX to pair w/ the phone but iSync said it didn't support it. BitPim didn't recognize via BT either. Maybe I need The Missing Sync?

If anyone's got a Mac or used a data cable, any elaboration would be appreciated.

I really like the UI. It's much thinner/smaller than I imagined (in a good way) from pics.

VZW store employees are a trip.

Cheers.

I have to say I am very surprised that so many people feel so strongly about the color of the phone. A few thoughts, like the other poster wrote - I really don't care about the color of the phone and didn't even think twice about it. Its not like the phone is BRIGHT PINK or something completely off the wall. Here is a thought that may or may not be true, think Samsung made the color this different on purpose? Lets say you are in a bar (not sure how many of you here are over 21) or in the mall (hows that?) and see someone using this phone. You really like the way it looks, the dual flip thing, etc. If the phone is black or silver you would have no idea what type of phone it is, etc. However, being it is champagne colored someone could say "I saw this really cool phone, it was gold colored..." or they could google "gold phone" or something crazy like that...now that I think about it, this idea of mine is pretty stupid and I need to drink more coffee in the AM before posting. But I am surprised that Samsung did not "name" the phone and just called it the u740.

omg!!! wth im still dying 2 receive my SHIPPING INFO on the phone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and yea the phone color nevr bothered me... i had the same thoughts... sum1 wud say omg the golden/yellow color n plus thats unique... not 2 mention i have nevr seen a phone thats this color... AND can flip both ways......

I am able to get the phone to connect to Bitpim via the data cable I bought with music essentials and I am able to view the filesystem but after that I can not do anything. Using Bitpim is still pretty new to me and I have not done it that often but after a few seam edits on my Razr it was a piece of cake. Are there going to be seam edits for this phone or is there for other Samsungs?

I would be willing to take some pic with the phones camera but I am not sure what to do with them as far as getting them posted LOL

Has anyone who ordered the phone online received a shipping confirmation yet? Or better yet, actually received the phone?

I just got Bitpim to work via bluetooth. I don't have a lot of experience with it either so I guess I'll just mess around with it and see what happens. I can see the file system.

well i was reading a thread on the a-990 and i saw how they were getting custom ringtones using there microSD cards. I got the ringtone to my flash card and was even able to view it and listen to it in my sounds but I could not figure out how to set it as a ringtone

I ordered yesterday online, then called to upgrade to overnight delivery (12.00 more), got the shipping conf, late last night, it is on its way and will be delivered to my work by 3:00pm today. Very stoked.

Does the u740 Music Essentials data cable... charge the phone battery?

Also, does it require the u740 adapter?

I saw a USB data/charge cable that seems to NOT require the adapter that came with the u740:

http://www.1800mobiles.com/samsung-...data-cable.html

Thoughts on these ones? I'd like a data cable that skipped the adapter adaption and also charged... and gave me vitality and enhanced my masculinity. Without serious side effects -- for instance, I won't buy a USB cable that causes "erections lasting more than four hours," it's just not worth it to me.

Your mileage may vary.

the data cable that came with music essentials does not seem to charge the battery. There is a port on the cable to plug the wall charger into it. The cable in the link looks like it would work

i dont know if we are suppose promote sites but i know a site that gives you a program to download that can help you make ringtones a lot easier than using bitpim (i believe). i used it for my vx8000 when i had it and it was awesome. NO DATA CABLE IS NEEDED. ...but you need to pay 7.99 for one year membership. i believe its worth it especially since it lets you use for up to 4 numbers.
After you make the ringtone you upload to the site and it sends a picture message to one of the four numbers on your account with the tone. then you save the sound as a ringtone in a message. i triend it since i got my u740 yesterday and i have about 4 already. it does use your outside verizon text messaging allowance

just thought it would help for the people like myself that cant wait for a bitpim version. if it doesnt its ok . the site is

www.freeringers.net

i just changed an mp3 ringtone to a .mid, sent it to my number@vzwpix.com and was able to save it as a ringtone. very nice. do vzwpix messages count as "IN" messages?

i guess it will work daveny just tried it. if he was able to save it as a ringtone it may just work. you wont need to pay for the site. i only suggested it becuase i had purchased it 2 years ago and still had it. didnt buy it just for the u740. but you can if ya want.

I agree. The pics taken of the U740 are nice, but how about some pics taken by the U740's camera?

Posted by: Billkenn

I haven't seen where anyone commented about it - but the holster for the new 740 is nice imho. The phone faces out - but the clip at the top that holds it in place only covers the stationary side of the hinge - so you can open the phone either way while it's still in the holster. The belt clip on the holster also swivels.

How the holster works is a big deal for me - so I'm happy about that. My new every 2 is up on 2/20 - I may just go ahead and snag this phone rather than wait for the moto maxx. I really really like it a lot after playing with it at my local Verizon store.

LOL. You didnt have to "hook it up". The phone automatically picked up the EVDO signal and displayed EV on the icon bar.

I still find it amazing how many people think EVDO is soemthing you have to enable or turn on.

But it is something you have to *use*. I think what he was trying to say is that he never surfed or used data services on his e815, so the u740, though not his first EVDO phone, is his first experience using EVDO.

On the U740

Go to Settings and Tools
#all zeros
#8886573982

Does that take you to a menu where you have an option for UserPrefsEditor ??? Just curious.

this is off topic but for anyone interested in making ringtones for this phone...I saw a few posts earlier about that...id recommend phonezoo.com...its free and lets you upload any song you want and take a clip of it and send it to your phone as a pix message...got mine to work well with the same trick DaveNY did...

has anyone tried just putting .mid's in the my_sounds folder (using a memory card), sending it to yourself in a pix msg, and saving it as a ringtone?

it works with some phones so why not give it a shot?way easier than most methods

Sure, this phone has a different UI skin than the other VZW phones, but can you load your own skins onto it? In the all blue color skin, does the UI still lag like it does in the VZW UI or is it faster? And why won't VZW just do away with the UI?? Are there any new updates on bitpim and/or p2k commander working with this phone? Also, this is a silly question, how crippled is BT? Is VZW allowing OPP now?

Thanks.

Posted by: thescreensavers

+1 count

for seeing pictures that the phone took with its camera

Posted by: adammmm

The blue UI lagged when I checked this phone out today.
I was very disappointed with the phone after playing with it for about 20 minutes at a VZW kiosk.
I, by no means, have fat sausage fingers, but I couldn't type well on the qwerty.
Great design otherwise.

The gold isn't bad at all.
I actually liked it.

Within text messages though, it does not offer the option to attach files to texts. So unlike my e815, I couldn't text myself the ringtones. Lame.

I ended up emailaing my vzwpix.com address with the sound clips and that worked fine. I copied the ringtones and set them.

I ended up just using freeringtones.net. $8 is a small price to pay for 30-40 mp3s I had on my e815.

You can only attach sound files to PIX messages. If you can get the phone to recognize your card, you can attach a sound to a PIX message. The only question to whether this would work or not is if the phone has the option to "Save as Ringtone" when you open the PIX message.

Another reason I like the Moto UI better.....

As stated before, yes this phone does have a save as ringtone option...

Also, when you save as ringtone, it gives you the option of making that sound your current ringtone so it saves you a step. So far I really like it.

Anybody figured out what the size of the internal and external screens are, to properly set the wallpaper size?? The ones I used to use for my Razr are a bit skinny for this display.

Anyone using this phone noticed a slight hiss in the earpiece speaker when talking to someone? I really like the phone otherwise, this hiss is kind of bugging me, maybe it's just my unit and I need to exchange for a new u740. Hmmm.... I've got through next Wednesday on my free 15. That was a peoblem on the A990.

ok im trying that right now. Weird thing though. The files that WERE there they got renamed like this:

Linkin Park - Meteora - 07 - Fai.mp3

EDIT: Woo Hoo!!!! That worked. Thank you FAUguy! Wonder if they'll do an equalizer or some kind of graphic in an update (like they did with the 9800) instead of just a blank black space when its open in landscape

Side Note:
my only thing, I kind wish the key lights were blue (instead of white), wish it had voice announce (i.e. "Text Message From Bo Joe") and wish there was a light that indicates if you have a message (like my 9800 did.....that was a nice feature to me). Other than that, really like the phone. The P button is awkward to get to. Dont care about the gold color (doesnt mean i like it, just dont care)

Posted by: dbdynsty25

Yeah I picked one up today at lunch and I dig it. I've got a Q too...and I was getting killed with that 45 a month in data...I decided to just get wireless sync (20 bucks) on the u740 instead. We'll see if it can actually make me happier than the Q...which I loved except for the recurring costs.

Wow just read through 11 pages and no one asked about call quality and battery life???

Did I miss someone's comment?

I have the VX8600 now and call quality is just ok, people heard me much better on the E815. Battery life is also a weak point on the VX8600 - I could get an extended battery but then why the heck did i get a slim phone...

*** In short - battery life? Call quality? (would help if anyone could compare to the 8600).

Thanks!

The battery's strong too. I've been online via Web 2.0 for about 2 hours today and I've been messing with vcast too. Only lost 1 bar.

ok I have seen many people ask the ENV vs. 740 questions and was going to answer as I now currently have both... But that could take awhile what exactly do you want me to compare? Because the main is issue for me was size and form factor, I got tired of that brick in my pocket... I will try and respond with any questions asap

Posted by: SK8ERboy

are the internal screens the same size and quality?
can you hack the u740 like you can with the enV

can we get side by side comparisons and pictures?
thanks kross

most importantly which keyboard is best?

thanksss

wait so ur saying i shud just activate em how they come n then i can switch the 740 n 340 wit no hassle?

Posted by: ii krossfire ii

The screens are the same size the ENV is misleading and looks a little bigger than it really is. The quality as well appears to be the same. I have yet to watch a movie though on the 740 screen. As far as some side by side pix I am at work and will have to get back to you on that. Lastly, the keyboard on the Env does appear to be easier to use so far. I am sure that there will be an adjustment period until the 740 feels natural. I found that while typing and wanting to insert a number on the 740 I just feel stupid and lost and end up just spelling it out. But like I said I should be used to it soon and I personally am done with the env.

Posted by: ii krossfire ii

just as another comparison music appears to be about the same on both phones as well... if anything the 740 might be a tad louder.

can someone please post instructions on how to customize your ringtones. i couldn't figure out how to attach a sound file. also, do you need a vzwpix.com account? thank you very very much.

also, i couldn't get modtones or any app when trying to use GIN. it said "No items were found."

Posted by: dbdynsty25

There aren't any GIN apps yet...they haven't added the phone to the system yet I guess.

All of the CDMA-side Samsungs have the Voice Signal voice suite.

So verizon ppl, please release this phone in different color and watch the sales go up .

For now I can only hope that they'll answer the prayers and release one in different color soon, or drop the price of a990 to like $199 with a 2 year contract.

Both screens are the same size, but the enV display is higher resolution (QVGA) than the U740.

I have one of these things coming in on monday. I was wondering if anyone has been able to use their own wap proxy with this phone? If someone could please try it and let me know I would really appreciate it. Thanks

i think the hint was that you can customize ringtones for individual users...

Posted by: th3amazingryan

Is it true that this phone has no vibrate function?

Posted by: biggd963

No it has vibrate.

Does anyone know if you can get free wap with this thing?

Dangit!!! I was all ready to get the VX9900 tomorrow, cuz my NE2 is up, but now I see this thing....

I don't imagine the features compare since the VX has about twice the space for hardware, but I wasn't real stoked on the candybar styling anyway.

I have two questions I couldn't find the answers to and maybe one of you can help me out.

Does it play video?(not Vcast) 3gp or 3g2 would be awesome

Does it support WMA or just mp3?

How are the speakers?

Sorry that was 3.... I always do that

These are the answers that will make me decide on this phone over the VX9900, since I'm already 85% there based on size and style.

Thanks and have fun with your new toy.

it plays videos. i have a couple family guy episodes on my microsd card and i can play them on the phone. im pretty sure its 3gp, but im not 100%.

the speakers are loud. i have the volume in the middle and it sounds good, alot better then the 8600. the one thing i noticed tho is that it does not have an external speaker. so if your playing music, its best to keep the phone open so you can hear it.

Posted by: sparty569

Ok...I played with this phone for about 45 mins today at a couple of different stores.

Some things I dont like.

1) Calendar events do not vibrate
2) You cannot view mobile web when the phone is opened in the normal phone mode
3) When you do view mobile web in the landscape mode, the wireless web does not take up the entire width of the screen. The menu system is left justified, and there is a big white bar on the rite side of the screen. Has anyone else noticed this?

#2 isnt a deal breaker, but the other 2 could be. I need vibration on my calendar reminders and I definately want my wireless web to take up the entire screen.

Can you guys please let me know what you see on your phones?

I suppose you do need a pixplace account, but it is free. I took an mp3 ringtone, changed the .mp3 to .mid (extension), then attached it to an email. Sent it right from my gmail account.

ummmm..............yes it does. When u go to add a calendar option down the list it will say TONE, if you hit the cursor to the right it changes to LIGHT and then VIBRATE

Thanks a lot, and you too DaveNY...

Sounds like this is my phone, what timing, 2 days before my NE2, very cool.

I just hope my local VZ store has one tomorrow.

Got tired of waiting and it was killing me hearing everyone in this forum who already had theirs, so I called and cancelled the order I'd placed online, and just walked into a VZW store and picked one up. Love the phone.

Posted by: Texasags

I stopped in the local VZW Corporate store for a look at the new Samsung Eldorado w/Gold Package...I mean U740. I have large hands (my wedding ring is a size 14) and there is no way I can use this thing.

I think it is a good phone, but the keys are tiny. Of course, there is the Samsung ghetto paint job to deal with as well...

Can anyone confirm whether or not free wap works?

Posted by: dmxsoulja3

I considered going to this phone, it has qwerty which I need, but by the time you give up your data plan, and get vcast for 15 for mobile web, and 15 for text messages, I just don't see it being worth what I'm losing...full evdo, windows based phone, slingbox, etc..verizon makes it to hard to make a decision.

If they can get to the UserPrefsEditor, that is a step towards setting up free wap..

Go to Settings and Tools
#all zeros
#8886573982

Does that take you to a menu where you have an option for UserPrefsEditor ???

Unless I did something wrong it didnt take me to a UserPrefsEditor. The #0's got me to another screen but as soon as I hit # again it takes me to the graphics menu which is the 12th option.

Posted by: fareal

Oh well, thanks for trying. That is just one way to go about getting to the wap settings. There are others that I'm not familiar with. I believe they can be found here..

Here is another way apparently..

I believe you can type txts on the keyboard with one hand like the treo or a Q, right? I have a vx9800 and have always been a little bothered that I have to use both hands no matter what. Like if Im carrying something I have to fumble with it to type on the 9800 instead of just using one hand even if its a little slower.

Anyway. does anyone know if you can tether this phone to a laptop like I do my 9800?

I noticed all the ringtone things... I use funformobile and it gives you pretty detailed instructions how to make your own ringtones and it is free and so is the program you need to select the parts of the song(s) you want. Then it uploads it and sends a text to your phone with the attachment, then you just "save as ringtone" hope that helps someone.

I got some test four you people with the U940

Startup time:
Shutdown time:
Time to get to camera:

and how loud are the speakers compared to the vx9900

Thanks

I know i cant send them bluetooth but what format do they need to be in and/or is it possible? I know w/ every single cingy phone I had I could send any "jar" file to the phone,... therefore I have quite a selection. I like having a few games for when I get bored but change phones way too often 2 buy them all the time. Any help??? Thanks in advance

you have to buy every game in "get it now"
no loading games to your phone or anything
verizon wouldnt let that happen.

This phone rocks....

Thanks to some input and praise from a few of you here I decided to go have a look at one in person, went to the VZ kiosk at the mall.

I asked the girl if they had them and she said no, but her co-worker was on top of it and produced one straight away. He even let me cash out my NE2 one day early.

The keyboard is decent and the shape of the keys lets me use my thumbs pretty easy(not just the nails).

I put a copy of Blackhawk Down (3g2.) I had, on a card and it plays great, sounds great. The screen is pretty nice, fairly intuitive controls and menus lotsa features. The speakerphone works very well, had a 5 minute call and it sounded great person on the other end said I sounded great.

I'm stoked... just gotta figure out the ring tones.

Posted by: cd1000

I picked one up today and it seems good so far. Call quality seems a bit better than my 9900 or 8600..reception seems good. No problem holding call with 1 bar showing. Viewing angle of screen not as good as enV. I love the size and typing is not bad..much better than 9900 to me. I hate how clumsy the 9900 feels with needing 2 hands.
It is very sturdy feeling I and the ability to have the screen at 0-180 degree angle is awesome..unlike the enV that has two places to move screen to. It also sits open and was great using vz nav on my cross country trip as I could just set it on the console of my car and it didn't move. VZ nav volume is better than enV...I like it so far...and did I mention the size. Goodbye brick enV.

You can simply send an mp3 attached to any email and send that to your phonenumber@vzwpix.com. I did it all day.
