Do you mean how do you check what firmware you have?
To do this go to Settings>Phone info>SW version.

It should, and if it doesn't, you can ask them to upgrade it.

The U740 has been out since End of Feb 2007... No update to add it yet. So I wouldn't ever expect one..

is there anyone who can help me i have u740 with vcast premuim,found site with free downloads of games, video ,wallpaper,ringtones they say their compatible with my phone i can download them but when i try to bring them up to play they say "unsupported contents type" help me please is it somethin to do w/wap if so tell me how to fixs it please

VZW's feature phones use BREW and there are no games/applications that can simply be downloaded online (not to mention that VZW's WAP browsers don't support downloading). You are limited to what you can obtain from VZW through Get It Now/Media Center on your phone.

I'm not sure if this has been addressed, and since it's at 121 pages, I think it's safe to just ask.

I just purchased a VERY lightly used Alias from someone. For the most part, it's brand new, except that when I text anyone, it always has pre-entered text (**suuwhhooopp**, to be exact). How do I remove this?

Could it be the signature? If so, look through the messaging settings to see if there's a signature enabled and change/disable it.

I got my Alias and can't make a shortcut to the messages screen. On my LG's, I push the down button and the messages screen comes up showing voice mail, inbox, etc.

I found how to make shortcuts but for everything else!

Isn't one of the soft buttons (generally the left one) already tied to go to the Messages section?

I have been asking this question a lot lately, and have yet to get a response. Hopefully someone here can help me?

I have this phone, but I am a Bell Mobility client. I know the firmware is different, and I am assuming this is why I don't have themes for my phone?

Is there any way to get different themes for a Bell U740? I think it is pretty lame I don't have any... The only thing I can change is the menu style, but I'm stuck with this theme and I'm bored of it.

hey guys i actually recently got this phone from a friend. well i had a quick question about the battery. how long is the battery suppose to last? the one my friend gave me i barely use it (calls or txt) and at the end of the day my phone battery is dying. i asked my other friends and looked stuff online about the battery. i got answers that range from the battery sucks u need to charge it every night to i can not charge it for 3-4 days. i have the gold one if that makes any difference.

I can use my phone for days without the battery dying, and this includes calls, texting, playing music, using the web, etc. Now, there are several things that you can do/change to effect battery life. Backlight duration, bluetooth on/off. etc. Also, the way the battery was charged the first time can effect how much it will charge in the future. Maybe try running the battery completly out, then charging it for a full night and see if that helps.

Here's what the Verizon web site has to say about usage time for the U740: Usage Time: Up to 210 Minutes OR Standby Time: Up to 200 hours

I don't know how accurate that is but I can use my phone (make 5-6, 10 minute phone calls and do 50-60 texts per day) and will only be down 2 bars of battery life after 2 days. As far as cell phones go it's one of the best for battery life that I've had.

no ... LiIon batteries are not as particular as batteries of old. You will see a lot of misinformation on the web (and from VZW employees, among others) about battery usage/care.

You can pretty much abuse your LiIon batteries as best suits your needs and not notice a significant difference.

The 3 main things that affect battery life are the battery's age (whether or not it is even used), temperature, and number of cycles ... not necessarily in that order.

EDIT: for example, I'd rather have my battery down to 60% of original capacity after 2yrs and charge it or top it off as best suits my needs rather than thinking about it and running my life around when I should charge or not charge my battery and have it at 70% of original capacity after 2yrs. deathblow, i tried running out the battery and charging overnight. it didnt really change the battery. i had turned off bluetooth, changed it to 1X, lowest backlight and etc and still the battery died on my everyday. One thing i noticed about my battery was that when playing music or watching movies on my phone the battery life lasted longer than me making 2 calls or txts... weird

eyeman35 my battery is nowhere close to yours. I get prob two calls and simple ones well under a minute and send 2 txt then im at two bars. Im doing summer college courses now so i dont even txt that much but my old chocolate i sent a ton of txt and still had full battery at the end of the day :/

I used to have the original LG chocolate and I always charged overnight with no problem. I talked to verizon they say they are gonna mail me a new battery for free. Now for my own information whats the best way to charge it? over night or no? i leave my phone on overnight since that's is alarm to wake up in the morning

Basically what it all says is that you don't need to follow any special rules with today's batteries--charge them when you feel you need and/or want to for as long as you feel you might need and/or want to. How old is the battery that you have?

hey guys srry if i bump this for no reason if u think that way but for all those that helped, thanks for the suggestions to fix my battery problem. turns out it was the battery itself giving me problems with my new battery now its been one whole day and a couple hrs so far and only bar went away. yay! this is the battery life i was used to. i think i get my new u740 in today too.

yep i think the one they gave me was refurbished and they just put on the new software. I had it activated for about a day and a half and random restarts. I gotta go to verizon today to pick up my 3rd u740. this is ridiculous... i have my phone on lock on power up. and various times when i get a txt (simple txt, not pix txt) the phone will reboot itself. the ringtone never goes off. when i open the phone later, the unlock screen is there. has this happened to anyone? verizon said after this last replacement today (3rd) they will give me a different phone i really love this u740 but the last 2 phones kept restarting itself.

i have auto-view off cuz the new firmware plays the ringtone for like a second and it sounds like static. i have auto-view off and for pix messages auto receive on. other than that is it normal for this phone to randomly restart everynow and then from recieving messages?

Ok. I have been at this forum for quite sometime.

Has anyone found out the password for when you go to

Settings and Tools --> #000000 to get to the hidden menu... but If you press 0 while there... you seem to be acccessing another menu. Its a 10 digit password... and I have tried just about everything but no luck.

Help?

I have the old alias software ZL05 and im sure this question as been asked at least once on this form but i dont have the time to look threw 50+ pages where it could be so here it is...Does anyone know if you can upgrade the old alias firmware to the new version of the alias that recently came out..i know they are different because i checked my friends version. does anyone find it ridiculous that it was a "feature upgrade" that when my phone is set to auto-view texts so that i can view them from the outside that the tone gets cut off a milisecond into it so it's not possible for me to be notified that i have a message when i have auto-view on????

I returned my wives and my Aliases this week, because both phones were shutting themselves off on a regular basis (sometimes every few minutes). My wives new one seems to be working well, but my new one actually was turning itself off worse than the last one, and did so about 5 times in the first half hour I had it going. I opened the battery cover and put a small wad of paper at the bottom of the battery, which pushes it against the terminals better, and seems to (at least for now) solved that problem. I called Verizon's tech support, and the woman I talked to says although it isn't a problem on every alias, it is a well known problem, and said if my new one becomes a problem, they would discuss other options (switching to a different phone) for me.

I just didn't notice anything actually BETTER about it. I could be wrong, but the 2 differences i noticed right off the bat (and only things i've noticed thus far) are that now it cuts off your ringtone for your incoming texts if you have autoview on (doesn't silence it, it cuts it off, so it sounds more like a defect, although the reps tell me its a "feature upgrade") and Navigator no longer shuts off when you close your phone, the voice just keeps talking to you if your phone is closed, whereas before, it turns navigator off...

Press the "hold" button on the side of the phone. It locks those keys.

I got my Alias last year and a few days ago the screen went completely white. I have been receiving text messages but no way to view them. I can't take the phone in right now to have them look at it. I was wondering if anyone could post a screen shot by screen shot of how to get to my inbox and forward the messages to my other phone. I have looked everywhere for pictures and can't find any and I don't know of anyone else who has this phone. If so, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I really, really tried looking for a thread similar to my question but failed. I recently bought the Samsung Alias and also purchased the usb charging USB cable.

I downloaded the USB drivers from OEM's website. Installed the driver and plugged my phone into my cpu. Besides charging the phone, anything else I can do? I cant seem to find the software for the phone so I can manage my contacts, calendar and everything else the cable is supposed to do.

Help...

use bitpim u can transfer anything except music that u go to "sync music".

how do you change mp3's into mid files?

i use myxertones.com and i never had a problem with ringtones until i got my alias..

what format do i need to use to save as ringtones and also save as sounds on my sd card?

so far i havent had one format that will let me do both on this problem..

I have found that to change mp3's to mid's all I have had to do is delete the .mp3 extension and rename to .mid. - this worked great with the old moto razr's, however, to make it work with the u740 is a pain in the butt.

If the only reason you want to save your sounds in your sounds folder is to be able to send them to yourself to create as a ringtone - I wouldn't recommend doing it that way. I have tried it - when you save sounds as a ringtone from a text message - the phone greatly diminshes the sound quality. The best way that I have found to get ringtones to your phone is to use Bitpim. Here is a link to the instructions for using Bitpim. By far the best option - if you want quality sounding ringtones.

However, if you still want to know how to save sounds to the folder on your chip - I have figured out a way - for me the only thing that has worked - is to record the sound using a program I have called, Replay Music. Then, you can bring the sound into an editor ( I use Goldwave, but Audacity or even any of the online sites would work) to cut and save the sound however you like. Once you have the clip that you want - change the file extension to .mid - now you can very simply copy and paste it into your MySounds folder on the memory chip using your pc

I would also recommend pressing the HOLD button on the left side of the phone. This button toggles on and off the lock for the front panel music player. Watch the front view screen on your phone while holding down the hold button for a few seconds. You should see a picture of a lock directly left of your battery meter. You should be able to toggle the lock on and off by holding down HOLD button. It takes about 3 seconds to make the lock appear and/or disappear. While the lock is on - you won't be able to use the music buttons on the front of the phone (below the front view panel). When the lock is not showing - you should be able to control your music.

I find on my phone that the touch sensitivity is sometimes a little wonky. It seems to work best when the front screen is illuminated. Try opening and closing your phone first, so that you can see the front screen. Then try locking and unlocking the phone. When the lock is off - try pressing the 3 buttons below the front screen. They should light up - and give you options for play, rewind and fast forward. To begin the music - press and hold the middle button. This will give you the option to play. Once it is playing - you can use the first and last buttons to rewind and fast forward your music.

this might have been answered but my boyfriend had this phone so i played around with it and yes there is an option to view the message on the outside screen. i would look on... probably message settings. i love this phone, i wish he wouldn't have gave it back to his sister but i will probably get one soon when i join his account in december. unless something better comes out. i would love to see what an alias 2 would be like!

might of been answered, alot of pages to read..i have an issue with mine where someone may call and i will not receive the call. i can have full service, and you can pick up another phone and call me 10 times. I may only get 4 or 5 calls out of 10 trys. The phone im calling from will ring and ring and ring and go to my voicemail but my alias will sit quietly on the table and not make a peep. makes me feel unloved and i have alot of people getting angry who think i am ignoring them. They may leave me a voicemail and ill get a notification 20+ minutes later. I have gone through 3 alias's under teh warranty and each will work fine for about 2 weeks and act up again. Never had this problem with any other phone. I first thought maybe it was my wireless network interfering with the phone untill it started to occur more and more when i was away from my residence.

Anyone have this issue? It is to the point where verizon has bumped up my upgrade and givin me a $100 credit on my bill towards my problems..but the samsung sch i760 that i have been eyeing up was just recently discontinued by verizon due to too many software issues and they dont know when its coming back out or any other replacement for it

To view text messages on the outter screen:
Go into Messenging and click the left soft key to open the "Settings" option.
Go down to 2. TXT Message
Go to 1. Auto View and turn that on.

It's worked for me so far!

Except that when you do that, Teacherange517, you'll never hear your text messages come through since every time you get a text message it cuts off the ringtone a millisecond into it so it just sounds like your phone is broken.

I can't seem to scroll when I am using Mobile Web. The volume keys will let me go from link to link or 1 page at a time if there are no links, but that's it. The scroll mode settings make no difference. Is this right? Is there a way to auto scroll? Those setting must be there for something!

Nope. You can only have 1 tone for text messages no matter who they come from. At least this is true with Verizon, not sure about other providers.

Are you using the Mobile Action software? If you are I could never get that to work very well either. I use Bitpim for ringtones and pictures.

I also use bitpim http://www.bitpim.org/#download and qpst and bitpim works great for my ringtones and wallpaper

The small mailbox is annoying, given the ability to plop a SD card in there.

Hi folks,

I have a schu740 from verizon that after alot of billing hassle (whats new? lol) I ended up terminating my contract with them. I ended up going over to alltel and getting a cdma from them. I'd like to know if the u740 is unlockable and flashable over to Alltel yet. I have UST pro2 that I downloaded but haven't used yet, is this workable only using the usb cable I have for the u740 or do they require a different one? The reason I ask is because I have seen some hits on google that say some about the cable has "smart card flash capability" or some such. So I was figuring it had exactly that, but I'm figuring I should be able to work around this using software and I'm not sure what to use here. We all know how infamous Verizon is for locking up thier phones tight so you have to buy apps/games/tones from them, any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I'm thinking about switching to VZW and getting the Alias. Does the WAP hack allow you to access wap sites (including gmail) without paying for any Verizon data services? I assume you would be using your minutes, unless it was night/weekend, in which case browsing would be free?

Contact the person who lost the phone and give it back to them. No matter what, wether you can get it activated on your account before the real owner reports it as lost, once they report it, the ESN will be blacklisted. And, I think Verizon will come after you, because they'll obviously be able to see that this other person lost their phone then you activated it on your account.

Wow, your other post about finding the phone at the theme park and wanting to know how to get it off the true owners account before they reported it lost/stolen is gone already?

I've searched around the board a bit and haven't seen this question. I'm a cell phone newbie and I've had my u740 for about a month. I got brave and downloaded a new screensaver for it. I was able to view the file after the download with no problems, but as soon as I set it as the screensaver the phone crashed. I took the battery out for a bit and tried to access the memory card through my computer, but it still crashes as it's booting up. Any suggestions would be appreciated -- just be sure to dumb it down for me!

pop battery cover off, 4 screws in there, there might be 3 under the filler pieces that are on the back. (2 on gold face, 1 on black). theres prolly one one the right side of the hinge where the little circle is.

if you choose to go that route, then you can check here for your speaker piece you're lookin for.

anyway, after switching to several other phones and, eventually, choosing to come back to the alias, i put some of the things i learned about cellphones to use. one particular thing was how to put movies on a phone.
although the alias can only read a 2 gig card, i was pleased when i discovered that i could load TWO full movies on one card....with room to spare. the movies play great. i did not expect the greatest graphic quality as far as viewing the movies, but, i was impressed with the end result. i mean, what do you expect from a cel phone?
i'm glad i came back to the alias. now, my next step is to buy a bunch of sd cards and put movies on them. i guess you can say i will have my own "micro" movie store.

I had a working ALias, sold it on eBay (item #290288935028, feel free to check it out). It worked fine on December 17th. I sold it to someone a few days ago and they are saying it won't activate. I had the face changed so I could sell it and I did use the Samsung codes to wipe out all phone info (http://u740.ca/testmode.php is the site I used). I think I used the code 027 to reset the phone completely.

The buyer claims it won't hold a call, so when they dial *228 to activate the phone call drops. Here are my questions:

1) could the replacing of the face by a cell phone store have broken something inside and that has rendered the phone BAD?

2) could have one of these codes done something to upset the phone?

3) if the phone was flashed, how could it not then work?

They claim they took it to Verizon for a software flash and it still didn't work. I need to look into that because they have told me over and over "since they didn't buy it from Verizon they are reluctant to help."

ANY INFO WILL HELP, PLEASE. THANK YOU!

why would you download a WAP application to the alias and be limited to its use (nights and weekends) as opposed to just using the verizon application?

i am sorry if this seems so juvenile in context, but i can't seem to get a "straight forward" answer.

oh, one other little question:
when i am viewing my e-mail and it has an attachment, it will read "view/download" or "download". on those instances when just "download" is showing, i highlight it and select it. after a few moments,it appears as though the download is complete, but i am never able to view it.
did it actually download? and if it did, where did it go?

WAP is essentially mobile web, or internet on your phone. Generally you have to go through a (proxy) server from your phone to connect to the internet. VZW provides such a server and charges an access fee for it. There are other people that provide these servers, some for free, plus you can also run your own, if you want to. On older plans you simply use up minutes for your data, so if you access a non-VZW server that is free and use it during nights and weekends you basically don't pay or use up anything at all. On newer plans you are charged for data differently, and VZW made access to their server on those plans free, so it doesn't really matter if you switch or not as you'd still pay for data no matter what server you use.

As for your email question, are you doing this in Mobile Email or some sort of application like that on the phone?

Just to make sure, are you accessing your (Yahoo!) email via the browser one the phone (like by going to Yahoo!'s mobile web site) or via an application that you installed and runs on the phone, like Mobile Email from VZW?

verizon supports yahoo. therefore, i am accessing my account through the browser. just just to clarify, i can access the account through mobile email or through yahoo, which i have saved as a favorite when i access verizon's browser.

I have an interesting problem. When I dial a number (lets say 412-555-1212) and press the send button to make the call, the phone backspaces and takes off the last number (which is a 2). So what I have to do is dial the number in the format of 412-555-12122 (with an additional 2).

Does anyone know why this was happening?

1. Does this phone support chat-style text messaging? I've heard yes and I've heard no, so please please please clear this up for me? Chat-style texting would be very convenient, but it isn't necessary...

2. If I download the appropriate applications, can I use Mobile Email and IM without paying pesky data charges? I just don't want to make the assumption that it's free and end up paying for my ignorance...

I don't think it supports chat style text messaging, although I'm not 100% sure what that is.

Mobil IM is free to my knowledge, but the email will run, I believe, $5 a month to use.

I can only assume "Chat-style" means that it is threaded just like this forum.... Then the answer is yes.

The Alias actually has threaded (SMS) messaging? Interesting.

As for email and even IM, you can often simply use online/web email and IM services via Mobile Web (and if you are on an older plan like AC you can probably change your WAP proxy server to point somewhere else and essentially only end up using airtime/minutes when you use mobile web, and not even those on nights and weekends given that pretty much all of us have unlimited night and weekends).

This may be a stupid question, but, is there a fix on the Alias for when you are using Verizon's Mobile Web where you can Scroll??? I noticed when I go to mobile web I have to hit a key just to bring the entire menu choices up (1 for news, 2 for Entertainment, ect) and if you hold down the arrow keys, scrolling doesn't work. There is a Scoll Mode Menu option from within the Mobile Web window, but, changing the settings do nothing. I was in the Verizon store over the weekend and they had 4 Alias Silver models and I tested all of them...none of them had scrolling available in the Mobile Web. I had a few Razr's before this phone and never had that issue.

I've had my Alias for 8+ months now and all of a sudden today the ear-piece stopped working during calls. It still plays ringtones and works with speaker phone, but not in any other instance.

Even stranger is that it will all work again when I have the phone in landscape format, it just has to be on speaker phone (which means I have to make//answer phone calls on speakerphone

). It doesn't make any sense that the speaker would continue to work in these instances, but not in portrait mode. Could it possibly be a bug in the firmware? Or is this just a case of overuse?

SAME. EXACT. DAMN. THING. happened to me last night!!! Speakerphone is the only way I can reasonably use my beloved phone now, which I've had for months and months and have LOVED. I've read about this issue in a few other places, but there've been no real answers or explanations that I've come across. Any ideas, anyone? Happened to me. If you're still under warrantee, call Verizon ASAP. They'll send you a new one.

I have a gross dislike for the Verizon Alias 2, main one: You cant send wallpapers to the phone via data cable and when you try to text them, Verizon removes the attachment. Verizon has everything locked up so yopu have to pay for everything, including "their" purchase themes and wallpapers. You can set up an email account for an extra $5.00 a month, but it only allows text emails. Not at all happy with Verizon right now...
