audacity is really easy and straightforward. but if that's too tough for you, just take the ringtones right off the get-it-now site (easy with downloadthemall firefox extension) or off walmart.com's music store. i change the extension to .mid and then mail them to my number. save the sound as a ringtone, and voila.

any ideas as 2 y i still have not recieved a shipping confirmation.... im getting very frustrated and annoyed here....

Posted by: Todd425

stoln05 - I really don't know what to tell you. I ordered mine Wednesday around 7:00 AM and received an email that the order was accepted and then around 1:00 received an email that it shipped with my Fed Ex tracking number. Estimated delivery date is today before 7:00 PM. If you have not heard ANYTHING I would just call them or check your credit card to see if a charge was put on it.

I would say you should just call customer service and have them figure it out for you.

2) You cannot view mobile web when the phone is opened in the normal phone mode
3) When you do view mobile web in the landscape mode, the wireless web does not take up the entire width of the screen. The menu system is left justified, and there is a big white bar on the rite side of the screen. Has anyone else noticed this?

#2 isnt a deal breaker, but the other 2 could be. I need vibration on my calendar reminders and I definately want my wireless web to take up the entire screen.

Can you guys please let me know what you see on your phones?

Can anyone comment on these please. When I called 611, they said that it was a possible defect with the display phones. But 2 phones, at 2 stores that are like 30 miles apart...c'mon.

I have a question also:

Does the flash stay on constant, like the vx8100 did? Or is it just a flash? (I like to use the light as a flashlight, and it drives me nuts that my vx8600 does not have it)

Also, how is the thickness compared to the vx8600? None of the pictures i saw in this thread compared em

Also: the $50 instant discount online, is that just a MIR in store?

Also: How is the battery duration?

Posted by: dbdynsty25

It is just SLIGHTLY thicker than the 8600. Hardly noticeable if you have them both in your pocket.

Posted by: sparky12

This picture was taken with my u740 and all the default camera settings. The lighting in the room was kind of low but you get the idea...

1.) The flash has an AUTO feature which will turn on when it needs to, but you can chage it to other settings like manual, always on, just this shot, etc.

2.) fairly close. when my buddy with a 8600 put his up to my 740 it was really close except the 8600 was just a little thinner

3.) the store I went to allowed me to do the instant rebate since I wanted to buy it from them. If you ask, the manager will say yes in most cases.

4.) battery duration so far is pretty good. Alot of people have commented on it. I got mine yesterday with 2 bars and played with it all night and only dropped 1 bar. today will be the real test (with full battery)

*****OK note: i was browsing thru the book (yes I actually for once decided to look into the book with the phone......i wanted to know what the hell the FN key was for) and it says BLUETOOTH HEADSET (MONO). WTF. I could of sworn someone on here said they tried this phone with a bluetooth stereo headset but I couldnt find that post (then again I wasnt looking hard). Can anyone who has a bluetooth stereo headset confirm this???

I have a Motorola HT820 set and just listed to a clip off vcast - definitely not high quality stereo sound. If I'm not mistaken, the A2DP profile isn't supported on this phone so the quality in a BT headset won't be good no matter what.

Ive been doing the email my mp3 ringers to phone too. Only thing that sucks, is some of them sound like crap, some are too quiet and others too loud. grrrrr hopefully Bitpim puts out another release soon that supports the phone officially.

grrrrrr thats what i was afraid of. not a big deal to me cuz i dont have stereo bluetooth headsets, but it would of been nice to have that feature in the event i decide to buy one. well I still have 14 days to offically decide if I like this phone. So far I do except the damn P key.......I really hate that key

Posted by: dbdynsty25

Yeah, the P key is a *******.

I'm still trying to figure out if I want to keep the phone too. To be honest, I'm not too impressed with the build quality of the flip (the KRZR, and all motos for that matter, was first rate) but I really want a full keyboard - even though this one is a huge PITA to type on. Maybe the ENV, I guess. Or just go back to the KRZR...

Posted by: ii krossfire ii

Ouch my $100 Moto stereo headphones not gonna work!??!?! I forgot all about those... The "P" key is a PITA but I would never go back to any of the Moto's available they all respond way to slow. When I had the KRZR I was extremely disappointed it is just a V3m in a different shell. As far as the En-v it is a great phone and I have mine ready to be reactivated if anything happens but my u740 is just soooooo much smaller I would be shocked if I end up changing my mine and going back to the EN-v

Yeah, I am going to let this pan out for the 14 days left and see what happens. What sucks is I was holding out for the MediaFlo LG....but that got delayed then I was going to wait for the Sammy 620, but MAYBE march 1st. and i kinda wanted to get rid of my stupid-gone-thru-6-of-them LG 9800. So I chose this one. theres a lot of things I love about it, but a lot of small things I dont.....and thats what worries me. Stupid I know, its just a phone, but the way I look at it, if Im going to do 2 more years with verizon it might as well be a phone I for SURE want. So we'll see. I will say this however, the Chocolate has the upper hand as far as the music phone part goes. If this thing could do what the cohoclate does (keeps playing mp3s while u surf the menus, after taking a call, etc.) id be 100% for this phone. but for now, im about 90%

Do you really expect that hinge to hold up 2 years? I've never played with it but just by the looks of the thing I'd be wary. Although I suppose you could exchange it within the next year with enough persistence.

I only messed with the u740 for about 20 minutes at the V store but it seemed pretty sturdy to me - but then again - I'm a cell phone neophyte.

I had an old Motorola MPx and never had any issues with the flip over a two year period - it was very solid and a lot better made than this one is. There was a little left to right play in the flip brand new so I'm guessing the over/under on the flip loosening up is six months. Any takers?

its actually pretty sturdy. there is a little play in the landscape flip but not bad.

Posted by: dbdynsty25

Yeah, it's much more solid than I thought it would be.

Yeah, the MPx was nice. Never owned one because I couldn't justify the cost, but I messed around with it a few times and it seemed pretty sturdy.

i dont know if anyone has stated this feature yet, but under SETTINGS --> TEXT MESSAGE --> BLOCK/UNBLOCK ..............hmmmmmm could be useful

Good call. I was looking at the product page on the site and it showed:

Bluetooth® Capable for the following profiles: Headset (HSP), Handsfree (HFP), Serial Port (SPP), Dial Up Networking (DUN), and Object Push (OPP) for vCard

Regardless, the sound I got through my Motorola headphones is definitely not stereo bluetooth.

So the U740 takes pictures in portrait (vertically) not landscape (horizontally)?

That picture was taken with the flip opened up in the normal way. For the hell of it, I opened the flip the other way and took the picture below. Looks like landscape!

yeah I saw the side note too, but when I read over the manual for HSP it said HSP Headset (MONO). Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

as far as the pictures, the one thing I noticed, when u take a picture vertically (non-landscape) it looks to be that way, but set it as a wallpaper and the landscape mode actually zooms in to make it strecth. Odd. Anyways I took a quick pic of normal and landscape picture taking modes. For some reason the normal seems to be more clear and not blurry. Guess Im going to have to play with this more. But if this is how landscape pictures are going to be...ugh..........ill take it back cuz thats horrible

Spot and Average only has to do with the light metering.
It should not effect the image being blurry or clear.
I'd suggest taking a few pics outside where there's good lighting and see if it helps.

hahahaha......but come on, he has a Wii. that makes everything better.

oh, i forgot, i have a question....
for the wallpaper, when you set it, does it resize the pic so that it fits when you are in landscape and potrait, or do you set two different wallpapers for each direction?
im not sure if thats what you meant by resizing R3GUL8OR so i had to ask to make sure.

i could never live with a camera like that.hopefully thats just a poor lighting situation cus thats terrible.

ok so I took FAUguy's advice (which I always do anyways) and went outside. Heres what I got for LANDSCAPE and NORMAL

Final Synopsis:

Thumbs up outside, BIG thumbs DOWN for inside low light

lol
now. The resizing question. Its weird. I chose what pic to put as wallpaper and in NORMAL mode it looks fine, but when you flip to landscape mode, it appears it zooms in on the picture to make it fit across the screen. its really weird. Ill try to see if I can take a pic of the screens to show you what I mean

Which is basically the same for all phone cameras. Quality indoor photos require a good flash and/or an optically fast lens.

Posted by: R3GUL8OR

ok here ya go.

The first pic is in NORMAL mode. Notice how far away the car is. (yes my car is filthy so lay off :P ) The next 2 pics are when its in landscape mode. Notice how the picture looks like it got zoomed it. The pic was taken with the u740 (but the screenshots were taken with my 9800)

EDIT: I forgot to move the button to macro on my 9800. so i took a more clear picture and updated the pics

Ok. Those outside pics look to be the same quality when in
portrait or landscape.
Quality seems to be good for a phone.
Just a side note, are you aware that you're taking pics at 1/2MP (800X600), not at 1.3MP (1280X960)?

Posted by: jenyfur

hey. i'm new to this board and new to the world of fancy cell phones. i've had my a-670 for 2 years now til its about to crap out on me. i've read the 16 pages of posts and i think i want to get this phone but i am a tad bit worried about the hinge breaking.

would anyone suggest getting the verizon insurance on the phone or is that a waste of money? i've never had insurance on a phone with them before...

well settings is on 1280x960 for the samsung, and the pictures that I emailed to my computer from the phone are in 1280x960 so i think its safe to say, I am using 1.3MP .... or am I missing something like usual? and after comapring some of the pics with my 9800 at the same resolution, the LG does take far better pics

(i updated the pics btw, I forgot to take it out of portrait and put it into macro)

I have a question. I had the 8600 and I had pics of my dads car that was taken from our Canon A610 digital camera. All of the pics were put onto the microsd card and showed up on the 8600. Now on the U740, only 1 of like 5 pics show up.

The one that works is 640x480 (res) and is 220kb and .jpg file.

The ones that do not work says the res is 0x0 and is around 30-60kb and is also a .jpg. Does anyone know what is wrong?

AHHHH USE MACRO!! haha he blurriness hurts the eyes!!
so im assuming that if you set a landscape pic to wallpaper, it will zoom in and cut off the sides?
hmmm interesting.
i personally would rather be able to set 2 different wallpapers so there is no strecthing. that would be nice.

EDIT: wow that was really crazy.you had me freaking out because before i posted the pics were blurry, then after i posted they were sharp. lol stop messing with me!

Posted by: dbdynsty25

I would definitely recommend getting insurance on a phone like the u740. The hinge is a very small part and I'm sure that a good drop would probably break it too. It's not a phone for someone who thrashes their phone...it's for people who will actually take care of their equipment. I just don't see it as very rugged...so i'd definitely get insurance on it.

yup and the fact that the sammy doesnt have a macro that I can find, probably explains my crappy close pics I was trying to take earlier. So I dunno. Very disappointed in the camera for this phone. The LG 9800 was really a better camera phone. Well I still got 14 days. It looks like the 620 is on its way in (which would give me 3 days left by the time it gets to stores) so I really need to do some comaprison or what not.

and HAHAHAHAHAHA yeah you were probably posting RIGHT AS I was switching out the blurry pics. my bad my bad

VZW phones are BREW only and are locked/digitally signed. No java support. You must download anything you want from GIN and pay up for it. Bit of a bummer, but that's how it is.

I thought to get insurance on it, and stopped in at the store yesterday -- it's $6 a month, which gets you a $50 deductible and a refurbished phone. No thanks. I'd rather save my money and take my chances, maybe by the time I break this I'll want something different. My father in law got a refurb E815 w/ insurance and it was crap, it's been nothing but trouble -- new is the way to go, and that ain't your option w/ insurance.

so is it confirmed this phone uses a propriety cable to transfer to PC via USB? I hope not. I don't see any other way to get ringtones/pictures transferred to/from the phone without it since my comp doesn't have bluetooth. I heard this thing about emailing mp3s to the phone but I don't have a data plan so I guess that would cost me money. This phone sounds really cool but I really need to know if it uses mini-USB cable. Thanks.

Posted by: R3GUL8OR

well just for fun, i turned on some lights and took another pic in landscape mode also so u can see a comparison between 2 phones, unfortunately, the little fu***rs moved so its not the exact same pic. still a little blurry. but oh well.

It says USB but I think it's proprietary -- anyway, I ordered from an eBay merchant that accomplishes data transfer and charging at the same time, it was like $12 w/ shipping. I put a link in an early post, somewhere around page six. I'm supposed to get it this weekend.

I just emailed it to my phone. It came out of my 1000 txt message limit. But the quality sucks, so until I get my data cable for this on tuesday, eh, its iffy. But yes its propritary. its not a mini-usb port on the phone

I think 2 of the ones that dont work are pictures that came from my old samsung a670. 2 more are from my digital camera.

The res are all 640x480. All are under 265kb and the name is less then 30 characters.

well true but heres how I look at it. $50, get another phone. or pay $321 and get a new phone. If they dont have the phone they will give u a new phone of comparable value (I havnt ran into this yet so cant tell you exactly how that works when they dont have your phone). I dont know about you, but I dont $300 just sitting around waiting for me to spend on a new phone in 5 seconds. Let alone, EVERY TIME I screw up my phone (which with my luck...it DOES happen to me). So, to me, the $50 deductible is worth it. just my 2 cents

Here's the problem.
Even though you have the U740 set to take pics at 1280x960,
they are being resized to 800x600 (for some reason) when you E-Mail them to your PC.
This is being done by the phone or Verizon's servers.
If you have access to a MicroSD card, you can save the pictures directly to
that and they will not get resized.

hmmm interesting..............well when I emailed them, the file info stated 1280x960. But I did what you suggested. File info still says 1280x960 and pic looks the same. So I dunno

Ok, then the problem is with PhotoBucket.
I know that it will resize images.
If you go to one of your posts in here with the pictures,
download it, and view the data, it says 800x600.

ooooooooooo ok. now I see what youre talking about. yeah the actual emailed image was correct size but you are right, the photobucket says otherwise. Once again you are very wise

still doesnt explain my crappy pics though. grrrr maybe its just the lens.

Has anyone else tried restoring their contacts with Backup Assistant with this phone? I keep getting incorrect pin number errors. I know that the pin is right. It's the one that Backup Assistant keeps telling me to use.

I'd rather not have to put these things in by hand.

Never mind. It finally took after like twenty tries.

I've dropped it twice in the past two days. Both times the phone ejected the battery and the cover popped off, skittering away. Hmmm. Oh, well, this is why my company pays for insurance on my phones...

but ur right in that set the 740 does look sharper. o well. Anyone think they'll do a massive software upgrade (add some stuff, enable some stuff, etc) to this phone like they did with the 9800 and choco?

Posted by: SJGhoul

Just picked one up today are here are some early impressions.

I'm by no means a "power user". This is my first new cell phone in 2 years (was using my trusty, albeit abused and dying, Samsung A-670 until today). I wanted a phone with a full QUERTY keyboard (to text and e-mail) that I could slip into my pocket comfortably.

Feels nice and small in my pocket. I have never had a slim form factor like the RAZR before and a few times today I didn't even feel it in there.

The keyboard will take some getting used to. The Env is much easier to type on but the tradeoff is size. The "P" is a bit of a pain as is the left side of the navigating disk when in landscape mode. (I'm a lefty so it might make this worse). But within a few minutes it was getting easier to type. I don't think it's much harder to type on this than on something like a Treo.

Also, a bit difficult to just dial a phone number because of the size of the keys, but I view this as a minor inconvenience.

The hinge feels relatively solid with just a bit of play. I don't think this can really be helped with this sort of one-sided hinge. Feels well made but I did get the insurance, just in case.

I can't really comment on much of the software functions for I'm very new to mobile web and such, but I'm having fun with it so far.

Note: Bummed that I can't seem to access my Roadrunner webmail with "Mobile Web 2.0" (I think it might be flash or Java based) but that seems to be more of a "Mobile Web 2.0" issue than a U-740 issue.

would anyone suggest getting the verizon insurance on the phone or is that a waste of money? i've never had insurance on a phone with them before...

I upgraded from the same phone a 670 and I too was worried about the hinge, but after playing with it for a while at the store I was very impressed.

The internal mechanism seems to be metal with very tight bearings and it feels good and solid. With the phone closed there's some side to side movement, but not much more than any other flip. All told, I think you'd have to give a solid effort to break it.

I have always had insurance on my phones, as a carpenter I tend to really f them up and since I've been paying ins. for 8 years they only charge me $3 a month(I've had 6 phones replaced). But I digress, the phone has a one year warranty and I'm sure this feature will be covered, so I probably wouldn't feel too bad if it wasn't insured.

As mentioned previously...you can download an email app through Get It Now for a couple bucks a month and have access to your POP, IMAP email (Roadrunner included). You can also get the wireless sync to keep all of your contacts, email, calendar appts. synced up, but it's a little more expensive at 20 bucks a month. Just an FYI in case you missed it.

Oh yeah...and the Get It Now apps probably aren't going to be updated for a little bit. Not sure how long it takes to get the new phones in the system but right now it just says no applications are available. But keep checking because they'll show up eventually.

LOL guys if you really want I will do the ENV photo comparison but it will make the Sammy seem a LOT worse than it really is.... I will get them posted up later tonight ( I actually took 1/2 my previous vacation pix on the ENV and developed them as we forgot the charger for the digi)

Insurance is at least a plus for a few months... because like previous posts I do not leave $300 laying around for a phone, but then again I can get a new one 1nce a year from here out.

I am thinking about cutting that plastic edge piece off by the "P" lol

ONe last thing for the pix I will only be able to do inside ones and will probably just pull them from the micro.

it's good. only difference is there's no output from the earpiece when you speak, the way there is on the e815. it's the same feeling you get when a call drops and you can tell because of the silence...

if that makes sense?

My Day 2 Review of the u740

EDIT: I forgot some stuff so I just added to this

yeah I hate the P button. that and the left directional key when you have it in landscape. but with as many buttons as samsung tried to cram in there, i guess thats a small sacrifice.

I cant say about the e815 but on this phone, just like the choco, when you have the vo9lume all the way up, it does crackle a bit. especially with my ringtones (but hopefully I can try to fix that when i get my data cable tuesday). Im still thinking im going to keep it tho. despite the flaws, they really are minor and the phone does what it is supposed to do. Keep in mind, here on hofo, we are a little bit more tech-savvy u could say, so we'll find the tiniest flaws that a normal user prob wouldnt notice or care much about.

I did notice however, when the phone is open, there seems to be a auto-volume on the ringers, cuz it got quiet. soon as i closed the flip and my buddy called again.....loud and crackily (i dont even think thats a word)

even though the MP diff, i still would like to see the photos of 740 vs enV. be interesting to see.

O and battery update:
(start: 620am)
13 phone calls (2 lasted 15 min)
3 hours of non stop mp3
camera shots all day and emailed them (as you can see from prev posts)
another hour of mp3
(stop: 821pm)
---------------
2 bars of battery left

not too shabby if I do say so myself.

MP3 player works very nice, but the black screen when landscape is open is ....... well ........i dunno. seems like there is supposed to be something there. Kind of like how the 9800 was before the major software update (it added visualizations and other fixes). An equalizer would be nice however. Seems odd they didnt even include a basic one. The MP3 player does not continously display name and artist of the song when in landscape. Can be annoying but not a deal breaker. The name of the song will come on the screen briefly when a new song starts. The file names for the MP3s CAN NOT be longer than 36.3 characters (36 characters than .mp3). Still experimenting with the whole Bluetooth Stereo Headphones. Samsung says it is. However their manual says MONO. So.........yeah........it has been confirmed that the Motorola Bluetooth Stereo headphones will sync with it, but the sound does not sound STEREO at all.

Camera well read other posts about this. Nice thing, Auto flash. You can set it for other options, but the fact I dont have to worry about it is nice. PLenty of customizations and visual effects to it. Multi shot function is cool. A macro would be nice for close pictures especially when it comes to screen shots of phones. It will take photos at higher resolution just fine. I got a couple on there at 4MP and it took it....amazingly. However, there have been reports of pictures not working. So its a trial and error with this part.

Phone calls are surprisingly very clear. The internal antenna is at the bottom of the phone, so its good because with the way most of us hold our phones, we wont be tempted to hold the phone where the antenna is (which is not a good thing). The phones menus are pretty sharp, however in the Amoeba (spell check?) theme, it does lag quite a bit when switching between menus. It does do MP3 ringers. However, you will have to play with bitpim settings to get them to sound right (the chocolate's settings seem to work well...at least whatever my roommate uses for his chocolate works well). A straight transfer from my 9800.......they are loud...very very loud and crack. Email them to your phone from your computer if you dont have a data cable yet. I did and it DOES work. Same with my video wallpapers, however the 9800 video wallpaers are very pixelated on this phone. Im thinking just playing with some settings should fix this. Yes its 3gp. To see the time on the front screen btw, hold down the volume or HOLD key. The speakerphone is loud and in stereo (i know but it is). You can have this feature on no matter what mode (normal, landscape, closed) the phone is. Thanks to krossfire for reminding me. This phone, like other sammys, has different styles for how you dial numbers. Standard, colorful, quill (which I like) and post-it notes. cheesey but cool. You can do picture caller id and ringer id, no individual message ringers (i think i already said this somewhere in here, but oh well). The keyboard is clever but cumbersome especially if you have large fingers. This is where the P button everyone keeps refering to comes into play (theres a plastic lip next to it which makes it hard to hit the button. However dont let that be the deal breaker. You NEED to play with the keyboard FIRST instead of relying on what we say. It is diff for everyone and I think with time u can get used to it.

Text Messaging has some cool stuff. Some have been on other phones, but they are new to me. You can block/unblaock phone numbers for text messages (nice for those annoying people who send you 100's of forwards and they are NOT on verizon so it costs you millions.......ok i feel better now). The main text is the same as many phones, can change color, style, add graphics, animations, sounds, pictures and videos. It does have 2 features Im not that familiar with: Sketch and Postcard. As soon as I figure em out, ill let ya know. Like many of the newer phones the text message will display the NAME instead of just a phone number. Nice when you have multiple recipients. It does do Wireless Sync email as well as Reply w/Copy (just like email, you hit reply, and the orig text message is displayed with a RE. There is no indicator light for missed calls, text messages, etc. However, you can have an light indicator for alarms and calendar functions (but all it is, is that the front display lights up....kinda a waste but whatever). Hinges (as stated over and over) seem very sturdy and I think are a lot better than the old sammy flip hinge days. This phone has ENHANCED DELIVERY ACKNOWLEDGE. basically it sends you a text message when the person on the other end receives it. I havnt tested it across diff carriers, but Cingular I know didnt worked the one time I remembered to try it. (you have to enable it with each message).

MISC When dealing with the wallpaper, the NORMAL and LANDSCAPE modes will zoom and crop your pictures, so dont be surprised when you put your own pic on there and say ..... WTF is up with my pic? You can remove the date and time ENTIRELY from the main display. Just like the ERI banner. hehehehe yeah. The directional keys can be customized but you are limited in the choices of what they can be. But honestly, almost....ALMOST everything is a choice somehow (just might need to go thru an extra menu is all). The phone is very light and fits pretty well in your hand. Dont let the gold color stop you from getting the phone either. its just a color people and its not like a OMG ITS GOLD color. its pretty subtle (spellcheck?). There is no dedicated camera key on the outside of the phone, just a soft key on the inside. 60MB internal memory. calculator (regular, tip and converter) and all the normal tools. The alarm clock wont let you set a mp3 as a wakeup ring.....figured it would be a choco only feature.....dam u LG! ummmm.....lets see.........there really is a lot of stuff crammed into this phone, so forgive me if I forgot some stuff.

So with Day 2 coming to a close, I give it: 8.8/10 Stars

Im sure Ill update this again by tonight.

Cheers

I LOVE THIS PHONE... But does anyone know how to turn off the EVDO?

Posted by: ii krossfire ii

oh no way it has sketch I missed that and forgot it was a Sammy thing it can take a picture then draw it to save or send as a message... not sure about postcard though

Posted by: ii krossfire ii

oh yea I one more thing I remembered about the Post its too when you dial, kinda cheesy but I liked that on the SAM990. ok well I will try and get side by sides with the ENV and pix from both asap

Posted by: ii krossfire ii

ok I am in post mode and everyone wants to "Steal" my phone...haha
OK I did some research about the stereo BT and connected mine, I can agree that the sound quality through them is not normal as with my ENV it sounded great. However I do know that there have been older phone models that unlocked that feature with an update... But they tend to be pda/smartphones... So lets hope for the better

Posted by: Ralf_K

Ok, so I've been checking this thread every 2-3 hours to see what you guys think about the phone and I have to say that the "color issue" is not that much of a deal anymore (I mean for the most part the phone works great and it has everything I was looking for; mp3, qwerty, and the size which was the reason why I didn't get the enV). Let me ask you this, if I do get the insurance and say that verizon comes out with a different color in a month or so, you think I can do the insurance job and ask them to send me the other color or will they be able to tell which one I had originally ??
Also can you post any pictures of the phone in the plastic holster or whatever it is you guys use to protect the phone, maybe there is a nice case that will hide some of that gold .

Thanks.

O and R3GUL8OR thanks for the great review.

Posted by: ostack

The problem with the P button is there is a little rubber standoff there at the edge that interferes a little with pressing the button. A small pair of wire cutters will trim that down real nice.

Can anyone post how to set up bitpim to transfer calendar and other data to the phone?
Thanks a lot.

Posted by: R3GUL8OR

OK I figured out POSTCARD. Same thing as SKETCH (you take a picture of any drawing or words and it "sketches" it on the phone to send. POSTCARD is similar EXCEPT you choose a picture to be the background. LOL I was laughing my *** off when I saw this. Letters were green with a picture of my car in the background. novelty but still cool

but upload the pic to imageshack.us or another image hosting site and it will create a hyperlink that you can paste into your reply.

i know at imageshack.us you copy/paste the link that says "Hotlink for Forums (1)"

Yeah I got the same thing... I have a feeling it has something to do with the initial programing and feature installation. Thanks!
Like I said, I'm a noobie to the features on these multimedia/web enabled phones.

I was hoping the access my e-mail on the browser for free, but I can swing a few bucks a months for the convienience.

If this is the wrong forum, I appologize, but a couple of questions about the e-mail Get it Now apps.
I was browsing through the Get it now apps on the Verizon website and noticed that there are a few different e-mail apps that I assume will work with the U-740. Are there any reviews anywhere on to which is the better app?
Also, sorry if this is a stupid question, but if I use one of these apps to look at my e-mail on my phone, does the message stay on my server (so I will have it on my computer when I check my e-mail) or does it remove the message from the e-mail server?

I couldn't find a FAQ on any of this, so if there is one, if someone could point me in the right direction I would appreciate it. Again, sorry for what are probably lamebrained questions.

Hofo works great. I am starting to notice some annoying things about this phone though. For instance, what's the point in having shift and num lock keys if they won't allow you to switch between numbers, symbols, and letters? It really makes putting any punctuation in a post or email a pain.

Does this only happen while in web mode?

Cuz I haven't tried it for email yet, but the #lock and shift keys work great for texting. And how about holding the key down for # and punctuation?

(I'm sure you already know that if you hold a key down for about 1/2 sec it types the secondary character)

Posted by: ii krossfire ii

found something cool we can do that the ENV does not. You can set any video as your wallpaper regardless of length. For example a wallpaper video on the Env has to be 30 seconds or less but on the 740 I have a whole episode of punk'd

This is from my u740, on wap hofo, and everything seems to be working just fine. It loaded up suprisingly fast and the nav. Was is pretty quick. All the kedypad features are working, a little different than normal, but they still work just fine for punctuation and capitalization. You have to hold down the #lock key, but I've taken to holding the keys down anyway.

The same thing happened to me. I made them replace the phone and the Rep. made sure the timers were on 0 and upon her activating (making 2 calls) I checked out the timers and it said 5. I am guessing it is tracking total usage of the phone, i.e. web browsing, get it now, etc. it is just displaying it as calls. I say this because after using the web, the timers jump up. I am just gonna try to watch how i am billed!

Also, this may have already been stated but if you go into my pics and edit (option 7), you have some really cool features...rotating, merging, sharpening, borders, etc.

Another useful tip (which again, might have been stated previosly, sorry if it has) is while texting if you hold the button down you will get the other option of the key (number or symbol).

Posted by: jak442

One annoying thing I noticed(and it says this in the manaul) is that the default text setting for web dialog boxes is symbol/number so you have to hit the #lock key every time you enter a new box. This was especialy confusing for entering a password, since you can't see what is being entered.

Example: hofo wap I went to enter my user name and got symbols, hit the #lock and entered name, toggled to password, typed it in and got a failed sign in, went back, enterd name, toggled to password, hit the #lock again, entered password and it worked. Pretty lame if you ask me, but nothing I won't get used to.

Has anyone figured out where to change the WAP settings? Got into 1 menu...tools/settings...00000, etc. Didn't see it in there.

i'm having trouble syncing my music to my phone. can you put the mp3s directly on to the sdcard or no? when i tried loading the v cast music part of the install cd it went through about half of it and then would go to install windows media, but since i already have it on my computer it would go back and said it was not completely installed. But i don't see any v cast music folder or anything in my program files. Is there something i'm doing wrong? Thanks in advanced.

Im gonna ask again.. 1st off got the phone yesterday and im loving it so far this is coming from someone who thought i would never find something better then my EnV... All the little features Samsung has to offer were the deal breaker for me. Even tho they may be small like the dial fonts ( Post it notes or the feather that writes the number ) down to the dial tones, and is it just me or it the new UI the desktop or whatever its called, is by far hands down the nicest new UI I have seen...

But here is my question.... Does anyone know how to turn off the EVDO ? Coming from using nothing but LG's where i knew how to do it like i know the back of my hand for the life of me i cant figure out how to do it...

Any help would be great thanks in advance

It's easier and faster to just drag and drop to a card, mp3 or wma...

Also, in the settings there are options to save data to the phone or card i.e. flix, pix, music, etc, so you can save everything to SD and leave the phone's memory free for apps, games and ringtones. I like this cuz the less you use the phone's mem the better it will run.

Kaveo: I totaly agree, the default UI is the shizzle. I think it's slower than the others, but it's much nicer.

P.S. I just figured out, if you go into the memory settings and to phone or card, then my pictures, click options, click move and it allows you to select and move files between the phone and card. It works with every folder on the card, pix, flix, music and sounds.

I'll try right now to see if I can make a folder for ringtones on the card and transfer them this way...... has anyone tried this?

Well I found my first weird "annoyance" with this phone. Now mind you this has only happened once so we'll see if it does it again tonight. Anyways, plug in the phone to the charger. Wake up, and no missed calls, text messages or anything. My roommate runs downstairs and then tried to call me to tell me to grab something and it went str8 to my voicemail. odd. so he came up and we tried it again, str8 to voicemail. so i thought something was wrong with my line so I made a phone call on it. went thru just fine but as soon as I connected. BOOM! 2 voicemails and 7 text messages from 12 and 1 am. And then my roommate called my phone again and my phone rang this time. Anyone else have this issue?????????

does it have an mp3 player in the same wein as the env, 9800, or chocolate?

i was looking at it yesterday and could only find the vcast. i want to hear music of of my sdcard

I haven't had any issues receiving calls, yet. So far, you are the first person I've heard with this problem.

u can play regular mp3s on it (regular I mean plain old non-copy written non-purchased/purchased mp3s) thru the SD card or the phone's internal memory. Its the same interface as the 8600 and has the same filename restrictions (can only be up to 36 chars (per the book)).

its not that Im having trouble receiving calls/texts. i receive them just fine. the weird thing is when I plugged in my phone and let it sit there charging, it stopped receiving everything until I made a phone call off of it and then suddenly.....text messages and voicemails all the sudden downloaded to my phone that were sent during the time the phone was plugged in. It was weird. Im goin to see if it does it again tonight.

I had my phone charging and I have been receiving TXT messages just fine. I even came to my computer and sent one from the web without unplugging the phone and works just fine.

hmmm yeah Im hoping its just a fluke. We'll see tonight. If it does it again, ill just exchange the damn thing.

I really like this phone. I've been using my Blackberry 7130e for the past several months and while I love it, I'd like to go back to the 'ol flip design...basically something compact. I like the fact that is has the full qwerty keyboard (although the buttons are small), but just concerned about the email functionality. I know nothing beats blackberrys when it comes to emails but I'll sacrifrice that for a smaller phone that has decent email capabilities.

Question is, does the U740 only use Wireless link to get emails or is there a way to set it up with my personal/business pop3 and imap email accounts? If I can setup my email accounts on this phone and pay the $15 for mobile web to grab my emails vs. the 'way too expensive' blackberry data fees, that would be very cool.

signal strength was full. so i dunno. at this point im goin to assume a fluke. we'll see if it happens again.

ok, now I know some questions were asked about MANNER MODE and I dont think it was answered. But I found a form of it:

press and hold # --> Goes right to vibrate
press and hold # again --> goes back to your volume setting.

my sent box only holds around 31-33 texts. Has anyone gotten their number higher? I find this kind of strange...

i dont think this is a phone specific issue because i have this problem on my enV sometimes. and now that you mention it, i does happen when its on the charger.ill be texting around midnight, not get a text back, fall asleep, wake up in the morning, and ill have a text that was
"recieved at 12:30a.m."
but
"stored at 3:20a.m."
its really annoying.i often just call my VM just to see if any texts are being held from my phone.

ugh......i thought other people were supposed envy MY phone when i bought THE ENV! not the opposite!

Posted by: jak442

It's amazing how many enV owners are on this thread, but I totaly understand.

I was 1 day away from getting the enV when I heard this phone had been launched. And I'm stoked, cuz the enV wasn't exactly what I wanted, it was just the closest thing, and i was willing to settle. Fortunately I didn't have to, cuz exactly what I wanted was a flip with a qwerty and that's what samsung has delivered, packed with a very nice UI and some really decent features.

I'm extra stoked cuz usualy when I settle for something that isn't quite what I wanted....... what I wanted comes out a month later

No... with a 2 year contract and the rebate it's $150.

With no new contract and no rebate it's $320.

Anybody figure out how to up;oad ringtones to this thing yet. LOVE the phone HATE the ringers. I realize VZW "needs" the revenue but come on people

Wirelessly posted (LG VX9800: SCH-u740 UP.Browser/6.2.3.2 (GUI) MMP/2.0)

I paid 319.00 plus tax. My initial opinion of the phone is good. It seems to be a pretty good blend of form and function. For its size, the ketboard is quite usable. It's nowhere near as usable as the 9800. I've never used the 9900, but I have to assume that its keyboard is an improvement over the 9800's, which would make it superior to the u740 by a long shot. But, overall, I prefer the u740 for obvious reasons. It seems to be an almost perfect blend of form and function. I can't wait to see what Samsung does with future versions of this phone.

yeah i would like to know too... i would be so disappointed if theres no easy way to do it... but hey thats what HoFo is for right... im pretty sure someone will come up with the technique eventually...

I don't get why, when I post wirelessly with my u740, it says LG VX9800 before SCH-u740. It doesn't seem to show that for others posting with their u740s.

are you asking how to upload mp3 ringtones in general or thru bitpim? if you're asking in general, you need to read thru this forum..its been said a dozen times. Easiest way, you email them from your computer to your phone with the vzwpix.com address.

Thanks. It's been so long since I got rid of my 9800, that I didn't even remember setting that up. I haven't really used the wap hofo since losing the QWERTY.

Another question for you people with the U740

How much are you paying for unlimited Internet?

Can you go to http://forums.anandtech.com/ and look at posts with out the phone saying some error because it cant display?

Thanks,Danny

4- What is the wallpaper size for the phone to fit the pictures in it?

5- When someone calls you, can you hear the MP3 ringtone well or does it sound a little muffled despite the fact that the phone is in closed position where else the speakers are inside the phone?

6- does the MP3 player sound great? (I know you guys mentioned it before but I just want to double check and make sure).

7- Is the Phone itself sturdy when flipping both ways Regularly and Landscape mode?

8- How Is the battery life for the Samsung SCH-U740? Usage time (average)? Standby Time (average)?

I have not been able to put ringtones I have made xxxx.mid into my sounds folder and have them show up.

I have also been able to find the file system under bitpim, and the correct folder to upload ringtones too. I added the file and even restarted it and deleted the directory file, yet the ringtone will not display with the phone.

I was able to send the ringtones I have made to my phone from an LG phone, and save it in my sounds folder and as a ringtone. Yet cannot not add the song from my sounds folder into a pix message.

One annoyance is a picture on my sd card, I set as my wallpaper, but when i take the card out, and put back in, it forgets to set as my wall paper. I must move the pic to my phone to keep it there on display.

Good luck driving and trying to find the numbers to dial. And the stock text message alerts are a joke.

does anyone know what the maximum numbers of texts you can hold is? I am upto about 40 recieved and like 30 sent

Also, can the phone READ texts to you? I know you can DICTATE texts (which is the coolest feature EVER imho) so it should read texts back I would think

also, does anyone think more flash themes will eventually be available via get-it-now? (IE are there extra themes available for the vx9900, vx8300, or vx8600?)

Hofo works great. I am starting to notice some annoying things about this phone though. For instance, what's the point in having shift and num lock keys if they won't allow you to switch between numbers, symbols, and letters? It really makes putting any punctuation in a post or email a pain.

In landscape mode if you hold down the corresponding letter key for the punctuation you are looking for it inserts that punctuation. Ex. for . (period) hold down Y key.

1. flash is decent. you can shoot a picture in complete darkness to about 5ft. Its not going to be a good picture, but no pictures in the dark are good with these cheesy little cameras.

2. camera works in portrait as well as landscape mode.

3. ?

4. ?

5. sure it is muffled a little with the flip closed. you can still hear it well, but you obviously lose some of the highs.

6. I have only used vcast preview so far, but the sound is pretty exceptional for a little phone like this.

7. pretty sturdy. better than I expected. very difficult to make it SOLID in this type of design without compromising size and cost. There is a little play in the hinge, but I think it is a little more sturdy when open in either mode than when closed. closed, there is a little more side to side play.

8. I'm happy so far with battery life. I haven't benchmarked anything, but coming from the Q that would not last 16hrs, I think this one might double that. I probably had a little heavier web usage on the q though. Yesterday, I used VZ Navigator for about 2hrs straight, and made about 20minutes worth of calls, and after about 6hrs, I had 2 bars left. I didn't think that was too bad.

9. there is no AD2P profile, so no stereo bluetooth. you only get the standard bluetooth headset audio profile. not gonna sound great. To be honest though, I have yet to listen to a stereo bluetooth headset that impressed me for sound quality. If you want it to sound good, go wired.

10. ?

11. dims after 5 sec, off at 10 sec

12. backlight on all keys is white, save for send and end.

13. I have found call quality to be excellent so far. nothing vad to say at all about it (only had it 2 days now). I did have trouble with speakerphone when I tried it. in landscape, the other party heard significant "echo". It may be due to the speaker being in such close proximity to the mic in landscape mode. I haven't expiramented with it at all yet, but that was my first impression.

14. no complaints on the other end about call quality, except for what was mentioned in 13.

15. no scratches so far, but I haven't bounced this one off the fireplace mantle yet either...

16. It has a good solid feel. no body flexing at all, and enough weight to it to feel pretty strong. the only obvious weakness it the hinge. the jury is still out on the port covers. phones normally have the rubber covers for headphone, and charge jack, and the like, but these are actually a plastic piece that is attached to the phone by a little rubber tab. They actually look pretty clean when in place. I probably won't rip these off like I do most phones.

17. ?

18. in between. I think it looks pretty good, but others have complained about the lower resolution. I think for the size, it is more than adequate, and brightness is good.

19. keyboard response for typing is very good. no noticable delays, unless you just bang a key as fast as you can, trying to detect it.

20. I would recommend it to someone who wants the qwerty in a small form factor, and doesn't mind the compromise of tiny keys. there are a couple little quirks that hopefully will be addressed in a sw/fw update, or it can be explained how to get it to work as anticipated (specifically, the fn, shift, num lock keys). The form factor/qwerty was the seller for me. The Q, while thin, just had a little too large of a footprint for me. and I like the flip style to hide/protect the keys/screen.

Not sure if anyone has posted this but a cool feature on this phone is when an incoming call comes in, you don't have to flip it open to answer. You can press and hold the speaker button down and it will answer in speakerphone.

Hit Message soft key, Hit Settings soft key, Choose 2. TXT Message, Choose 1. Auto View and turn On.

Posted by: ostack

more fyi...

it displays each message as it arrives. if multiple messages arrive, the last one is is the one that is left on the display. it will remain displayed until the display times out, but it will still be there if you select one of the side keys to activate the display. and you can scroll through the message with the volume buttons. when you open the flip, the message will be on the main display.

speaking of which, how do you activate the outside screen without opening the flip if you dont have a text waiting, it doesnt seem to work

edit: also, I have noticed that the manual has a big thing talking about how the phone will not charge with a 3rd party charger, anyone have experience with this?

I believe the manual says that the charger will not charge a third party battery. ??

I know this was resolved (it reads "battery" not "charger") but I just thought I'd mention that I'm receiving a USB data/charger cable that's spec'd for the u740, prolly get it Monday or Tuesday. It was a beyotch to find one that did data and charged (for this phone) but I ordered one for about $12.95 that claims to. I'll update with verification of its efficacy ;-)

I believe I'm keeping this phone... I likey. The earpiece has a little more hiss during calls than the e815 or vx8600 but I think it's because the speaker is better -- that is, the hiss always was there on the other phones, it just wasn't conveyed by the Moto / LG tiny earpiece speaker.

Next step is to haxor the wap and get free internet. Whatever that means.

once again... the question is left unanswered.... has anyone tried or is using the 2 gb microsd/transflash??

Posted by: SK8ERboy

can i ask a question...... on the enV we are able to back up apps like VZNAV.. is this so w/ the u740???

Posted by: rexchampman

Was thinking about playing around with a U740 in the store yesterday. I went to the SF main store on market st and they had no idea what i was talking about and had none on display....what gives?

Posted by: Todd425

I tried using a "Postcard" text message and I am confused - all it does is put a new picture onto an existing picture? I thought it meant u could type txt onto a picture like a real postcard. any ideas?

Posted by: paladin732

write something on a piece of paper then taking a picture of that, thats how it works

I'd also like to know for sure from someone who's actually done it since I'll be trying it on Tuesday when my new every 2 is up. However - in the meantime - on Verizon's website it does list the 2gb cards under accessories for the u740 so I'm assuming a 2gb card is supported.

exactly. its cool but eh. For POSTCARD you'll select a pic and then the camera comes on. With the camera you'll take a picture of something written or sketched on a piece of paper. Example, you slect a picture of your dog's face. Camera comes on and you take a pic of the words "I LOVE MY MUTT" that is written on the piece of paper. Once you take the picture, your dogs face will appear with the words "I LOVE MY MUTT" transcribed over it.

I havnt tried the 2GB card yet so I dunno if it will work. Honestly I dont see why it wouldnt.

You can save MP3 ringers via the email way. They just need to be short. I just emailed the MP3 ringers I had for my 9800 (I created with BitPim) and saved as ringtone and they worked. They need to be REALLY REALLY tweaked cuz the sound kinda sucks on some of em, but it works.

Umm...o..........be careful when you have a phone call open in Landscape mode. If you close it, it doesnt end the call. So if you get done talking to someone and close that flip then start talking smack about that person........umm they can still hear you......cuz ur on speaker. lol. Yeah I learned that one by mistake.

Umm I think that was it.

Anyway. does anyone know if you can tether this phone to a laptop like I do my 9800?

also, does anyone think more flash themes will eventually be available via get-it-now? (IE are there extra themes available for the vx9900, vx8300, or vx8600?)

NO extra themes are available for ANY phone, as far as I know.

extra themes and the ability to create them " user content " has been a recurring topic in most mfg specific forums for Verizon wireless phones

I know it comes up in LG forums

Well that's tricky... It says "Bluetooth Stereo Headset Capable." Maybe meaning "it will work with a stereo bluetooth headset," but not that it will support all features of the stereo headset. What Verizon considers "capable of" can mean "supports the bear minimum of."

I have been able to drop all my (400) xxx.3gp videos in my flix folder and it worked. All my .mp3s into my music folder and it works, sounds folder does not work with my ringtones though

I'll back this up for sure, I've been using a 2gig Sandisk transflash micro and it works great.

I paid $40 each for mine at amazon(from blueproton?).

I can't be certain that any other manufacturer's 2gb will work. I've heard both ways for many devices, from many people, but one thing seems to hold true: that the bigger the storage size the more issues people have, but Sandisk cards almost always work, and if they don't it's probably just a faulty card.

I put on a 3g2. in m-peg4 and aac and it wouldn't play, but a 3gp in h263(?) forget the audio codec, plays just fine.

Does anyone have a solid idea of what codec/shell combos will ply on this yet? And which ones are better?

I know the VX9900 will play 3gp and 3g2 in m-peg4 and h263 with aac, but I'm not sure about the u740

In Super I used the standard 3gp. (nokia/nec/seimens) settings. (h.263 and AMR audio)

Anyone else tried out the navigation app yet? I used it the other day and was pretty impressed. I normally use my laptop and a Garmin USB device that works well, but this thing didn't miss a beat. It has a little more latency than the garmin unit, but the directions were very good, as well as the implementation of voice prompts. There were a couple of issues that nearly all gps devices and routing sw suffer from, but for a stinkin' phone gps, well, it really works. I'll be curious to see how well it handles some weaker coverage areas.

Posted by: ostack

I picked up 3 1Gig cards from newegg for less than $35 shipped. They have some with rebates that would have been less than $30 shipped.
