i dont have the samsung studio , is it a free down load, whats the link, i'll try it out

Alot of good information on here.

I would have bought this phone last week when I was looking at it in the Verizon store if it wasn't for the fact that the screen resolution isn't as good as my A930.

I really like flip phones, but would love to have a Qwerty pad. I don't need all the applications of a smartphone.

Hoping this phone is popular enough for Samsung to upgrade some of the features.

The a930 and u740's screen have identical resoltuons. Both have 18-bit color as well.

You know when I did the side by side comparison online I couldn't understand why the screen on the phone in the store looked so much dimmer than my phone. Maybe it was the picture they had on the phone. But I opened my phone and held up next to the U740 and my screen was brighter.

Sometimes things like this are just the individual phone. Maybe their display model just wasn't up to par.

I'm not in a hurry to get a new phone so I'm going to wait till May. If they release it in a different color then I'll get it and test it out.

Thanks for verifying that daveyp. I thought I had read something wrong.

The u740's internal memory can hold up to 500 contacts for quick access to email addresses and phone numbers. The phone lets you easily assign pictures as well as ringtones to your most common callers. In addition to vibrating alerts, the phone supports polyphonic ringtones, as well as recorded ringtones you make yourself.

how true is this? recording ringtones?

u740 or env???? i cant decide!!!

There is an option to change the brightness/contrast on the display, both the front lcd and the main.
They can be found in the display settings>backlight>display>brightness, this is for main screen and display settings>contrast is for the front lcd

hmm idk about the recording ringtones... ive tried, didnt work for me??? did it work for anyone out there?????

I found the layout and shape of the keys on the u740 much better than the 9900. Even with my big stubby thumbs!
I wish the screen was better, but I am sure I can live without it.

I think I'm sold on the u740.

Couple Questions:

Does this phone support A2DP?

Do mp3 ringtones actualy work with caller ID?

Anyone found any software bugs?

How is the ACTUAL battery life?

I took my krzr back because it lacked these features had charning problems (sometimes a full battery would only last 4 hours on standby!).

Just wondering if this is the phone for me...

Posted by: ranchboy

Question for the u740 owners. does the alarm work even if the phone is off? My lg vx6100 alarm only works if the phone is on, this drives me crazy cause I get woken up through out the night from calls....thanks

I don't think the alarm will work with the phone off, but there is an option that you can set up for alarm only. This means that the phone will only ring for the alarm while remaining silent for any other event (txt messages, calls, etc). This should solve your problem.

i used to have the enV and bought the u740 the day it came out.
from my experiences the U740 has superior battery life to the enV in terms of playing around with it, (im not sure about talk time)
the mp3 ringtones DO work with ringer ID (every phone i've ever used other than POS motorolas has worked)
i havent found any software bugs yet, but try browsing around in the forums:

i agree with you on the keyboard part.
many users have said that the enV has a superior keyboard (which is true because it has separate number layouts) but i do have fairly large hands and the u740 is so much easier to type on.
The low-res screen is kind of a letdown but same with me i can live with it.
i bought the enV back in december and then bought the u740, THEN
traded it back to the enV but the very next day i exchanged it back to the u740 because i liked the feel of the u740's keyboard much better.

difinately not on the phone.... However it is listed in ONE verizon Advertisement/website... Not sure if this means it will be coming later (like Chocolate's speaker phone), or if its just a mis-print on that web site...

that is definately not typical Krzr performance...

Yes, the Krzr lacks A2DP like the u740... but you can also use MP3's for caller ID's, and there are not too many "known" software bugs to speak of... I can't speak for Krzr battery life because I haven't used one for more than a few minutes...

Yes I know. I changed the brightness and contrast settings on the display model. The screen resolution on this phone is lacking. Hopefully if it's popular enough they'll release a version with upgrades like a better resolution screen.

Turn on auto-view under message>options>txt message.

well I found a weird bug. I seem to only be able to re-produce it every so often, but I will go into my ringtones, play them, and when I press end. It restarts the phone. Any ideas. I was thinking maybe a bad mp3 ringer, but I deleted them and it would still do it every so often. Ideas?

Does it do this with a stock ringer?

I agree, hopefully in the future they will have a better screen and the ability to take pictures with the phone closed. I was suprised to find out that the u740 isn't able to.

You do realize that when the phone is closed, the only view finder on the phone is facing the same direction as the lens, don't you?

Posted by: ekm_r

I know, my wife's a950 is able to take pictures with the phone closed, my old lg vx6100 was able to and both of those phones the viewfinder was on the front lcd along with the camera lens...
I thought it was a feature on most camera phones nowadays *shrug*

ok another question about headphones. does anyone know if there are any companies that make headphones that will plug directly into the phone without all these adapters? it seems clunky to have to plug in the first adapter to get it to 2.5mm and then a 2.5mm to 3.5mm to get it to regular headphones. i'd be down to buy a new pair of headphones that just plug directly into the jack on the phone.

Posted by: pgens

The Music Essentials Kit has a pair of headphones in it that plug in with the correct end. Verizon also sells the proper headphones as a separate accessory.

Verizon's Web site does not seem to have accessories for this phone listed yet. But I'm looking at the packaging on my desk and know it exists. You're looking for "Stereo Earbud Headset for Samsung, compatible with Samsung SCH-u740".

The phones with the MEK plug straight in and I'm sure that, within a few weeks, there should be something else available. But it seems like there should be something out there to work since it uses the same plug as a few other Sammies(I don't know which for sure except the blackjack).

Posted by: Justintoxicated

Thanks everyone for answering my questions.

I will not be getting this phone due to lack of A2DP and having to carry around headphnes AND 2 adapters and headphones.

Other than that it looks like a great phone, since I would not be using the keyboard like crazy it would be perfect for me since the EnV is too large for my taste.

Why does Verizon keep putting out music phones with no A2DP! WTF!

That's the mystery... the 8500 and 9900 have it, and GSM Samsungs now have it. Why they would release a new phone branded for music, or any new phone without it, is beyond me.

I've been wondering, since the screen specs out as the same as the enV, a990, etc., if it might just be a software limitation on image/video quality and may therfore be an issue that could be resolved throug a firmware update.

P.S. This is certainly the case with video, since the on-board player won't recognize or play a video over 176x144, there is no doubt that a software based limitation has been placed on video resolution, keeping you from using the full potential of the display.

The question/s is whether this has been done because the hardware can't support the full 220x176 playback, is close enough that samsung didn't want to push it or if the software simply came that way(so to speak) and they didn't see the reason to (again)push the hardware for slighly better display. But the big question is whether this limitation is an all emcompassing one that effects all things on thier way to the display.

The KRZR DOES NOT work with ringer ID when vibrate is enabled.
I know for a fact that many people do use Ringer+Vib on their phones,
That is a major flaw that motorola did not find before releasing that technically flawed phone.

someone had mentioned that the cable for the a707 worked with the u740 ... so maybe the earplugs for the a707 will work too...
I found a pair on ebay and should arrive tomorrow... these plug straight in, and hopefully they work!

Posted by: pgens

That was me, and to test I just plugged in my "u740" earbuds from Verizon into my A707 and it did indeed work, so the reverse should be true.

That's an interesting observation. It would be great if it was something that wasn't hardware related and could be fixed with a software upgrade.

I'm about to return my u740 for a few reasons:

1. The battery life compared to my e815 isn't there - the phone drops 50% of its power daily.
2. The phone just doesn't feel very solid compared to my e815.
3. I realized I'll never use vcast or mobile web after two weeks of playing with it. EVDO is insanely slow in San Diego, so I just don't want to hassle with it. And Vcast is utterly worthless. Plus the phone's browser is cruddy.

The only hassle now, putting all my numbers back in my e815. Argh!

Plus by switching back to my e815 I'm free to leave VZW and I can dump Vcast and phone insurance.

Posted by: jenyfur

thanks to those who replied about the headphones. i see some cheap ones online. hopefully more variety will come soon!

what's A2DP that you guys speak of for the phone? something to do with bluetooth and music? sorry for my lack of knowledge. i really don't know much about bluetooth at all. does this have anything to do with bluetooth headphones or earpieces?

Posted by: JD22964

Wow, long thread.

Does anyone know if this phone will work with my Motorola HF850 Bluetooth Car Kit? Not sure I'm willing to leave the e815 for a phone that won't work in my car.

Thanks,

JD

Looks like it may come out soon. Seems like a simpsons yellowish color. I guess...if you're into yellowish colors or the simpsons.

The Simpsons movie is supposedly coming out in July 07. This is probably going to be a limited collectible cell phone.

I don't think Sammy is heading in the right direction. Well, maybe for the teen market.

I doubt the Simpson's phone will ever see the light of day, especially from Verizon.

I picked up my u740 last week, and I absolutely love this friggin' thing. As pointed out 273 times already, the keyboard is small, but who cares. I am willing to give up a larger keyboard for a smaller overall phone.

i would love a a bright yellow phone .. yellow is my favorite color, so if the simpson's cover doesnt have to much name branding on it, i would be down with swapping it out for a regular u740

I really like the champagne color - in fact it's "almost" a perfect match with the Nokia BH600 BT headset.

FYI: You may want to download Backup Assistant to your phone, its an excellent tool for tranferring your contacts when changing/upgrading your phone.

Does anyone in the Toronto area have this phone? I'm deciding between the SE M600i and this, and I really need to see them in person to decide.

Also, where`s the best place to buy this phone in Toronto? Bongo Wireless doesn't sell CDMA phones.

Woo. This phone is pure win. I'm a freshman in highschool, and a qwerty phone that fits in a small form factor is JUST what I needed. And I must say, the Howard Forums have helped me a ton with getting stuff accomplished on this wonderful device.

A few questions:

1) I'm running Vista Ultimate (6000), and I can't seem to get my phone to connect to the computer. I've got the data cable that came with the Music Essentials Kit, and to be honest, I'm very disappointed in it. The headphones, while convenient, are very uncomfortable in my smallish ears, and the rest of the kit is all but useless to me without the data cable. Does anyone have a fix for this?

2) Applications and Games. Is there a way to get free any of these? Verizon is charging exorbitant amounts of money for said things, and I have no desire to go bankrupt trying to trick out this phone. In the same vein, is there a way to get a browser similar to the Opera Mini/Opera Mobile for the u740? I checked, and there is no listing for it. I'm also wondering if there is a way to get flash on the browser.

Well, I'll stick around the forums, and I look forward to socializing with the gurus here. (And the rest of you too )

Cool! I am a junior in HS, and I just ordered this phone yesterday for $40, using my dad's NE2.

There is a vista thread but I don't think there is a clear answer to getting the phone to work with vista.
Games cannot be added, only BREW games that can be purchased. No, flash in mobile web, no way to add it. This phone does not run java so it is limited compared to lets say unlocked GSM phones.

Anyone else considering going to the 620? I don't know why but I really like that phone. I'm afraid to jump though, and I hate the fact of losing the keyboard.

Posted by: RichySteez

Has anyone had any more issues with irregular speaker performance? Tin can? Crackle? Minor or major issues? Just wondering if others who own the phone are experiencing these issues. These quality issues were mentioned earlier for some users Thanks for the feedback.

Posted by: thevillageidiot

The only time I have notice any “crackling” noise from the speakers is when I have the volume maxed out playing a song. This is not every time, it depends on the song as well as the quality of the mp3 file. Granted you will get a lot better quality of sound using a pair of shure buds, or any high quality headset, but I’ll just use the built in speakers most of the time. So for me, this is a very minor issue. If I want to crank out, I'll just put on my headphones. For volume levels below the max, they work great 100% of the time for me.

Posted by: king_of_fools

yeah compared to most phones the speakers are phenomenal, but you have to be reasonable the response cannot be like that of normal home speakers, nor the same frequency range reached. They simply aren't big enough to try and hold them to the same standards. For me though i have found them to be excellent and as the last poster said crackling (ie. distortion) can happen when the volume is up to high on certain songs ... but its hardly ever and issue ... if it really bothers you, use the headphone out and portable speakers (i got a set at walmart for 5 bucks)

has anyone actually used both this and the 9900 and can give a comparative description/preference?

Posted by: NYHeel

Does anyone know how to change the 2 soft keys on the phone? I saw how to change the shortcut arrows around the "ok" but I want to change the soft keys. I like having recent calls as one of them and it's not an option in the arrow shortcut keys. I was able to change the soft keys on my old moto v710.

Also, I've noticed a reception issue. My basement doesn't get great cell reception. With my v710 it was just passable. With my u740 people sound ok to me but they tell me that theey can't hear me. Also I lose a lot of calls in my basement. It might make me return the phone as I'm in the basement a lot.

I had the chance to check out the 620 this afternoon when I was picking up a Q for my wife. It's a neat little phone, but in my area it will me pointless to own it for quite awhile, as I doubt we'll be getting TV anytime soon. If we had TV, I'd take that before QWERTY any day, but I'm sure by the time we do there will be much cooler handsets taking advantage of the technology.

I do like the size of it, but other than that, it seems like a pretty generic slider. Let us know what you think in a few days, when you get over the new gadget bliss.

Well to be honest, the 620 was the phone I originally wanted. When my 9800 was crapping its last crap, and my contract was up, I went to go see what the status of the 620 was. At that time, it was still undecided if the phone would only go to TV markets. I played with the 740 (my 2nd choice) and really liked it and figured id go for it. But when the 740 was starting to act stupid, I took it to VZ and was going to exchange it for another. Till my VZ store contact said...."antonio.........it came in!". took me awhile to figure out WTF she was talking about, but then she brought it out and I was drooling. So I played with it for like 3 hours. No doubt the screen is way better (QVGA). I compared the camera screen with that of the choco and the 740 and it was just outstanding. big plus. the 620 doesnt do QWERTY (duh) and you dont have the cool Edit Pictures options (you do have zoom and rotate though) like you have with the 740, but really, i was raised with T9 so it wasnt too hard to go back to it (so not a deal breaker) and when am I going to use the edit pictures function (or the TV function for that matter). But i really like how it feels in my hand and how it operates. It was really well done. I turned the volume up on the SAME mp3 ringers I had on my 740 (i emailed them to their mockup phone) and it didnt crackle, pop or sound distorted at all like they did on the 740. Even the mp3s sounded awesome. I was really impressed. I will miss the 740's thinness and keyboard, but all in all I think the 620 was just a better fit for me. The TV was NOT the factor btw.....that was just a added bonus for when I get out of the military and move back home to denver.......where i can enjoy that service.

Im going to do a review of it probably today or tomorrow, so check it out guys and tell me what you think.

And no, we havnt figured out the dictionary additions yet. It is the same with the 620, however, I havnt tried this, on officially supported bitpim phones you can add words to the dictionary file (so I was told/read)

You can just hit "Send" when the phone is idle to bring up recent calls...

I'm also thinking of jumping ship. I'm in Denver and watched the TV service on it last night and it is very impressive. No pixelation and very smooth and clean. The only thing stopping me is giving up the keyboard, which is weird because I didn't have one before.
It's about as bulky as my 8100 so that won't take any getting used to. But I really like using the mobile web with the wide screen view and the keyboard makes web address navigation so much easier.

Man if the could put the 620 into the 740 form factor it would be the ultimate.
Decisions decisions...

It is the amount of time you have to have the flip closed between landscape and portrait.

Does that mean it will "save" whats on the screen and allow you to flip it. Cause whenever I do that, the screen never "saves" anything. It goes back to the main screen.

Only while texting... otherwise it resets.

I can only hope that a firmware could help this, cuz it'd be nice if it worked for all apps.

has anyone figured out the WAP settings for free internet use that uses up your minutes? my friend has it on his enV and i dont really wanna use DUN

If so, no one has posted it. Give it some more time.

Yea, someone would have to leak the verizon samsung PST for this phone, and then we'd be in business.

Does the phone have speech-to-text? I asked the people working and they said no.. o_O. I thought it did?

Yes it does. It does not have text to speech however like the 9800 has.

Posted by: pgens

It has it as an option for input for text messaging, but it isn't available for the Notes tool where I'd like to see it too. It seems to work pretty well.

I'm still experiencing sketchy speaker quality. I have used the cell for a good week in a half now. I am experiencing crackling during conversations.

I just would like to know if others are experiencing the same issues with their cell. This is occurring with the earpiece and speaker phone on the highest setting. It's not all that terrible, although irretating during conversations. If the volume is turned down a setting or two, it doesn't occur.

Do all sch-u740's sound similar?

Are any others experiencing this same issue with their volume on high?

Will another new u740 have the same speaker quality?

Does anyone have any recommendations to solve this issue?

Thanks for the feedback.

Posted by: R3GUL8OR

i had to turn my volume down to med-high becuase it would sound like is popping/crackling and too loud. When I turn down the volume, its a lot better and I can still hear the conv well.

Posted by: RichySteez

Thanks R3GUL8OR. How's that new u620?

Are you feeling it? Which one you like better? u620 or the u740?

Posted by: DarKeneD

Why would you need the calculator to go past 2 decimal places.. you get a real calculator for that. And how do you do speech to text? Is there an option somewhere for that cause I couldn't find it.

I tried calling my own cellphone with my friend standing away. It sounded terrible.. worse than any phone I've ever heard. But maybe it was because it was abused. Can anyone confirm this? Very metallic and delay in voice response.

its a tossup for sure. I really am digging this 620 though. The screen is what is really amazing me. I liked the QWERTY keyboard of the 740 and the 740 did have the EDIT PICTURES options but the 620 has a lot of great features. The camera on the 620 has ISO options btw, that is one thing I did notice and like.

Has anyone figured out how to make the ringers in alpabetical order without having to go into bitpim and play around with the index file?

DarKeneD:
The Speech to text option is only on Text messages. When you start to write the text message, click the left soft key (Entry Mode) and at the top it will say VoiceMode. You will need to adapt it first if you havnt. But after that, all you do is hold down the voice key on the keyboard (the guy with lines coming out of his mouth) and speak (slowly with pauses in between words). Dont stop even if you make a mistake. It will try to correct itself when you're done. Once you say everything, let go of the key and it will auto correct. if words are still not write you can use the directional keys to highlight the word that is wrong and change it. See also http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=1114833 because it is talked about in there.

As far as the sound, some people have experienced the metallic like sound you are describing. Mine wasnt that way, but Im not saying it doesnt exist becuase you are not the first to mention it. As far as delay, all cell/wireless phones have a delay with voice. The voice goes phone to tower to phone, not phone to phone. You are not going to get real-time voice. Is that what you are referring to or are you saying that the delay is longer than normal?

yes in the middle of the text message hold down the button with the face with the mouth open ( it is between the camera button and the number lock) and speak clearly its best to use it in a quiet area. but it works well for me.

also fyi if you speak and a different word comes out the back space wont erase. You must use the CLR button to do so.

I haven’t seen this posted but if it has I’m sorry for repeating. I have been able to send music to my BT head set. Although it is not stereo and it sounds like you are listening to it inside a can it does work. What I do is start playing a song then press forward (advance to the next song) three times in a row. You will hear the beep in the earpiece, and then should hear the music. If it does not work, keep trying. I will usually get the music in two or three tries. What I think is happening is the phone will send the beeps and such sounds to the head set, but turns off when you start playing music. Buy sending three beeps, you seem to trick the phone in not turning off the sound. Like I said, not great sound but it works if you just want to hear some music and don’t have your wired headphones on ya.

R3GUL8OR did a heck of a job creating the sticky at the top of this page. It does a pretty good job of compiling most of the pertinent u740 information.

Just picked up this phone...couple of questions:

is there a reminder beep for missed calls?

is there a way to silent/vibrate the ringer withouth opening the phone?

is there a desk charger for this phone yet?

Posted by: thevillageidiot

For the reminder beep, try Menu >> Settings & Tools >> Sound settings>>Service Alerts>>Minute Beep>>On I think this will work.

As far as your second and third question, I believe no on both.

Posted by: anthonyatddn

1) reminder issue...

settings and tools-> sounds and settings -> alert sounds -> then theres just message reminders, so if the missed call leaves you a voicemail, then that'll do the trick

2) silent ringer issue

for example if its on your desk and it gets called, simply hit one of the keys on the side, and this will silent it. this is a similiar action as to if you were to "wake" the phone up if its all standing by.

3) desk charger

not sure, its worth some surfing around the net though.

hope these help. enjoy.

damn thats what i get for typing slow

Posted by: Chase265

thanks for the quick replies guys....I already did some research on these issues, and found the same results, but just wanted to confirm with the board here.

thats what we're here for!

Let us know if you find out something different will ya? Not sure how you could get a desktop charger with this phone.

The easiest way to set your phone to stun is by pressing and holding the # key.

Posted by: anthonyatddn

what do ya mean by stun?

Posted by: thevillageidiot

Stun=vibrate. Sorry.

lol its cool. i thought you added a tazer mod to your phone...

or something like this...

great invention

I was considering this phone, but ended up getting the 9900 (env). One of the reasons I didn't get this one was I experienced the same problems with sound that you are seeing when I tried this in the store - speaker crackling and vibrating with volume up, and metallic sounds. I posted this back a few posts. In case you're intesrested, I think the 9900 has good sound.

Posted by: RichySteez

Thanks for the recommendation rockee. I checked out the 9900, great phone although it wasn't for me.

I'm pretty much stuck on keeping the u740 at this time. I do have an option to exchange it for another verizon cell, although this is the type of phone I've been looking for.

Now, if the speaker quality can just be improved a 'bit better...it would be the almost perfect cell for me.

Does anyone know if the sch-u620 has a better performing speaker phone?

Is it loud and clear or similar to the u740?

Thanks for the replies.

Posted by: dmxsoulja3

Do you need the speaker on its highest setting to hear someone? I've never had to have my ear piece on highest setting on any phone to hear unless the phone totally sucked...and pretty much every phone I've had if you had the speakerphone or speakers up all the way they crackled, I mean think of the size of these things.

i HAD the 740, now I got the 620. IMO, i do think the speaker sounds much much better on the 620. My 740 did do crackiling/popping when on its highest setting. with the 620, its more or less every great once in awhile. I think the quality is much better, dunno why, but it is. You can really tell the diff between them when it comes to ringers. take the same ringer, put on both phones, put both phones on MAX volume and listen. The 740 does crackle and sounds a little distorted. Could be a lot of reasons for this, but that was the first thing I did (sound quality is a big thing for me) when I was in the store debating on wheter or not I was going to switch phones.

doesnt work for me

Posted by: thevillageidiot

Djricorich, maybe it is just my phone, but if I skip forward really fast it will work. Just keep hitting the forward button untill you hear the beep in the head set and stop. If it doesn't work the first time do it again.

Posted by: Chase265

another question:

I have auto view on for text messages on so I can see messages without opening the phone..my question is, how do you take the message off the front screen after you're done reading the message?

The only solution so far I've found is to actually open the phone..is there another solution without opening the phone?

I've searched all 48 pages of this thread and haven't found the answer to my questions, so I guess I'll post.

First- a little history:
I picked up the 9900 last week and earpiece volume is kinda weird. My g/f has a soft voice and when I turn it up loud enough to hear her, the sound is all grainy and distorted. When it turn it down enough to make the sound clear it's too quiet to hear her.

If I can't get this resolved I want the 740. Problem is- it only has space for 500 contacts. I have over 400 unique contacts on my phone now so I need the 9900's 1000 entry contact list because I'm sure I'll pick up more than 100 contacts in the next 2 years.

Anyone know how to make the 740 accept more contacts?

Thanks,
Brandon

Damn! you have that many or have that many and talk to those people? lol. No workaround that I know of as of yet.

Posted by: Brandon Clifton

Yeah- I call almost each one of them at least once a month. The ones that don't get called that often fall into one of two categories:

1) Parts vendors that support the machines for which I am responsible at work

2) People in other states/countries where I travel that I hang out with whenever I'm in town.

So yeah- I need the space for 1000 contacts

So I picked up the phone today, speakers distort at the highest setting which I expected from reading..the P is super hard to hit lol...and I hate the way it defaults to Abc went putting in a password...and is there an easier way to do a .(period) then func. key?

some punctuation (if its on the keyboard) can be accessed by holding down that associated key

this is true, the amount of strain placed on them tiny *** speakers to hear it on another floor in the house is pretty intense. i applaud them for the sound they produce as is. rock on tiny *** speakers \m/ rock on

ok so here is a ligit question, and no where in the 48 pages has it been addressed. So, when using the voice signal deal to dial digits, does the number you want to dial have to already be in your phone book?

ex. if the number 555-1234 is not stored anywhere in your phonebook, can you still dial it via voice dial? couldnt you just say "call number five five five one two three four"?

thanks for the insight, sat cant come soon enough till i pick 'er up.

Wirelessly posted (Samsung SCH-u740: SCH-u740 UP.Browser/6.2.3.2 (GUI) MMP/2.0)

I just experienced my first random reboot, on this phone, while using mobile web. I suspect this is a software glitch related to the Verizon UI. Early versions of the 9800's software had similar problems that were solved with software updates, so I'm not too worried about it yet.

Yes. You can say "Call Bob" if in phonebook or "Call 555 555 1212"

Posted by: thevillageidiot

Yes and the number does not need to be in the phone book for it to work.

Posted by: anthonyatddn

that answers it, cuz i had a sammy before that you could do the name or number, but it had to be in the phone book. this will revolutionize the way i dial numbers.

I guess I'm extremely right handed, but I love everything about my u740 except that it is designed lefty! Opens backwards from what I'd expect. No biggie, just takes some getting used to.
I am ticked about a game I downloaded. Galaga is one of my favorites of all time. I don't know why, but someone in their infinite wisdom set up the games controls screwy. The ring is left-right and the OK (in the middle of the ring) is fire. Damn near impossible to play this way. Can't figure out why anyone would design a game this way when theres a HUGE Enter button on the right that could be used for Fire! I'll stick with Pac-Man and card games on this phone for now I guess. Anyway, thanks for the place to rant a little and I do love everything else about it.

Posted by: armueller2001

Found another couple things I don't like...

1) Calculator only goes to 2 decimal places

2) The weight converter uses metric tons instead of US... uhh what country are we in?

3) When youre playing mp3's in landscape mode, theres a big black screen... itd be pretty nice if there was a visualization or something

4) No EQ for mp3s

5) Screen delay when the phone opens

6) Calendar issue - shows calendar icon if there are any events, past or future

Yep, those have all been well covered.

Ok some other questions that I'm sure have been covered a thousand times in this forum, but I do appreciate your help anyhow. I'm looking for a freeware program that will batch convert pictures I've taken with my nomal digital camera so that I make them small enough for my phone to recognize them. Also is their a way to separate pictures into folders on the phone. And lastly is there a way to lock a folder so that you need a code to open it? I feel a little retarded asking these questions but I'm new so please forgive me. Thanks

Ya, I tried that but it would'nt recognize them in the larger format for whatever reason. Copied them from my pc to the micro sd and it wouldn't show them. I have an Olympus 6mp so I'm not sure why. Works after resizing though. Would be nice if you could zoom in on different parts of the pictures though like you can on the digi cam screen. Would be nice if you could organize them into folders too so you didn't have to page through hundreds of pics to find the one you want.

OMG Thank you...I was seriously about to take the phone back because I browse alot and I'm thinking geez my thumb is so sore...volume key FTW!!!

I'll sawy one more thing, I don't like that it REQUIRES you to do certain things in landscape...hopefully maybe a software update will come out for that, sometimes I like to just scroll down a page quickly or watch a quick clip.

Forgive me if it's buried in one of the 50 pages here, but - Is it possible to set the phone to vibrate and then ring - like on the E-815 and other Moto phones?
I can make it vibrate OR ring, or vibrate AND ring at the same time. I would like it to vibrate for a few shakes BEFORE it rings.
Anyone figured this out?

Ok, just went to verizon and fiddled with the phone a bit, I checked out the txt mesaging in regular flip mode. The T9 for them is called Word.. But what i dont like(and i think this is for any phone besides motorola phones) is that when you start typing for example the word Start is 782 etc etc, When i type it in i get Sub but i dont get any choices of picking a different 3 letter beginning like motorola lets you. I love that choice thing that motorola gives you.

If you hit the 0 key it will offer more choices.

I can make it vibrate OR ring, or vibrate AND ring at the same time. I would like it to vibrate for a few shakes BEFORE it rings.
Anyone figured this out?

About the best you can do is to make your custom ringtones with a few seconds of silence at the begining(5-10 seconds). And since you'll probably want your own ringers anyway, this isn't a big deal. You just won't be able to turn it off like a feature.

What is the largest microSD card size supported?

Do I have to have the card before I send my own MP3 ringtones via pic message?

the way that I achieve this on phones that don't offer it as an option is to make my ringtones with a couple second delay at the beginning so it vibrates before the sound starts playing.

When i go into world clock and set "local time" to the right place, it still wont change on the phone itself.. just in world clock mode.

Verizon will change it. Make a phone call or send a text message. Mine didnt update right at two, but the minute I received a phone call @ 3, it changed. My roommate had to power cycle his to get it, so I dont know why your power cycle didnt reset it.

Posted by: anthonyatddn

filtering down that many changes to alllll phones im sure takes an emense amount of resources, but if it hasent happend yet, im sure a call to customer service would be in order..zzzzzz

ok, it finally changed on the last cycle i made.. very strange that it took so long. thanks for ur help.

I never owned or used a bluetooth headset before, so with this phone I wanted to try it out. I'm trusting the homies on this forum to tell me what the best headset for this phone is! Let me know what you got and how its working out for you all!

Thanks

friend told me that this phone was in some rap video and that it had a 3d menu for your contacts sort of like the desktop theme? anyone know anything about it or if it was fake

What, yours doesn't have that?

I have the Nokia BH-600 headset which works great with the phone, gets great reviews and ironically enough - looks very good with the phone - almost a perfect match colorwise.

i think the my desk theme is about as 3d as it'll get. if it was more than that, its entirely possible that he was blowin smoke up ya ***. too bad though, im a fan of the 3d ui.

*addition, is your friend the rapper?*

Posted by: korben42

yea, but this was a 3d UI for the contacts, supposedly it listed the pictures you have set for your contacts and enables you to rotate thru them like how u can rotate thru the different menus in the desktop theme

Is anyone else having a problem with their phonebook? I uploaded my phone book with bitpim and it seems to have pretty uniformly clipped the first four digits from the front of the home numbers only. I'm ending up with only the last 6 digits of the number, though the entry in the bitpim desktop looks good. Any others with this problem?
I used a blue tooth serial port and the 950 profile.
I've also been able to transfer an MP3 to the MR folder but its not showing up on the ringer directory in the sounds menu. Does it need more editing?

Posted by: Ashineh

any wap settings come out yet?

Posted by: thevillageidiot

Sailor19, yes it seems all are having this problem. It seems we just need to wait for pitpim to support this phone. As of last week they are still waiting for a U740 so they can start work. Who knows when that will happen.

Ashineh, I have not heard anywhere about wap settings for this phone.

OK, so people have had this phone for a few weeks now. For those of you who have had it for a while;

Are you guys having problems texting. The keypad looks so tight.

I love the dual flip feature, but it seems like the keys are just too close together to make QWERTY texting really easy.

And is the camera quality just too bad, or do you get used to that, too.

I know neither feature is as good as the ENVY, but is it something you just get used to after a while, or does it not ever get easier. I have one friend with the U740, and he says texting is hard, but he admits to having "stubby" fingers.

Posted by: thevillageidiot

I don't mind the keypad, other then when you are dialing they are two small. It’s just more of an inconvenience then anything else. I've had a Treo and like the wider keypad better. Although the nice thing about the Treo is you can type with one hand. But this would cause you to take longer to type a message. I also have an XV6700, and I like the 740's keypad better as well. Using these qwerty keyboards does take a little time to get used to, maybe that is why your friend is having problems.

As far as the camera, it is a lot better then what is on the Treo and XV6700, so I have no complaints about it.

I don't know why it would not work. I've used three different headset's with my 740 and they all worked great! It's all the same technology so again I know of no reason why it would not work on the 740.

Well, he had the ENVY before, and before that it was the old model of the Envy, whatever that was called. He likes how small this new one is, but he doesn't like how much harder it is to text compared to other QWERTY phones he's had.

Right now I have the old model of the ENVY, that brick thing. I can't decided between the u740 and the ENVY for my upgrade. I love texting, and I really like the idea of a clamshell phone, so the u740 should be perfect, but it might just be too small.

I have never used an ENVY, so I can't be much help. This thing is small (which I like, and is the reason I went to it from my XV6700). I don't do a lot of text’n (around four or so a day) and each are 10 words or less and I like it. But I do have small fingers. I would suggest going to a Verizon store and send several TM's. Then you will know first hand how you like it. And keep in mind Verizon gives you 15 days to bring it back if you don't like it. You should be able to send a lot of text messages in that time span.

i didnt have the ENVY but i had "the V" the 9800 and the video and txting was lot better on it the thing is jsut way way to bulky.. i know with the 9900 they slimmed it down a bit but still imagine trying to carry a log in pur pants pocket..
i wear baggy pants so it always would get turned sideways and smack me where i would rather not like to discuss.. but if u want simple txting and better video and can stand a brick go with the 9900.. if you want somethign that will sjut take a bit to adjust to and video qual just a little lacking compared to the 9900 i would go with the samsung

I use a leather Moto-branded RAZR pouch with a belt clip. The unit slides down into the pouch and a flap comes over the top and is held in place by a magnet. The u740 fits well in it.

Looks like the RAZR case on this page (top row black case):

Given the complexity of the double hinge design I wonder if there will be an acceptable OEM cover made that will work and not hinder the operation of the display. The speakers would have to be considered too.

For now I use a lanyard (strap) that give give me another chance to catch it if I drop it. As far as impact protection, I have none, I will have to depend on my ninja reactions to save it.

Posted by: pgens

I'd think a snap-on plastic cover would eventually come out for it that wouldn't interfere with anything.

Actually it looks like it might go the opposite way (landscape) without taking it out. The top hook part would interfere with opening the unit in portrait mode it seems.

It flips both ways (I just picked one up from a VZW store). Taking the phone off the holster is a bit awkward, but it does its job well. The phone is just as easy to use with or without the holster on and all buttons/ports/slots are accessible.

Posted by: oppy

is the holster really good ? like does it have a tight grip on the phone. i am just a tad big against holsters as i hate having some part of the phone being exposed and just for the mere fact if i bump into something there goes my phone maybe

Posted by: anthonyatddn

im in the same boat oppy. i simply keep my phone in the same pocket, i know its in there, and nothin else goes in there. i think its a pretty good solution and im pleased.

Thanks for the reply Villageidiot. I found another thread listing the problems others are having with the address book also, so hadn't checked back till now.
I've been using an SD micro that I formatted and loaded with the Chocolate software and it has been playing the songs I had previously loaded on it. Today I tried to copy more songs and I'm getting a "cannot copy file-the file name-: cannot find file sector". Does anyone know what this means? Is it reffering to the SD card sector or the drive sector? I'm able to play the files on both Windows Media Player and the Vcast player so I don't think the MP3 is corrupt. Any ideas?

Posted by: sailor19

I was just wondering if it would be possible to lift the A2DP programing off the A-707 and put it on the u-740.

Holster holds the phone well. No wobbles, it won't fall out (unless you drop it or bang it really hard against something, but then you're probably more likely to break the holster), and even pulling hard on the phone doesn't budge it. Like I said earlier, the way it holds the phone is a bit awkward, but it does its job well.

Another comment: The clip on the back is centered but I noticed it wasn't placed correctly in terms of the phone's center of gravity. When you rotate the clip 90 degrees to clip it sideways, it will tend to one side. Not a big deal to me, and not noticible when it is actually clipped to your pants/belt.

You can buy it and try it out, return it if you don't like it.

A Verizon Chocolate pouch works perfectly with the side buttons exposed and the transport controls exposed too, but the play/pause is the only one that works for me while still in the pouch...I'm gonna cut the plastic over them so they all work. Also, with a bit of modification, a mixture of a Razr front and an LG8600 back may work...haven't had time to play with that tho.

My holster worked well too - for about 3 weeks until it exploded while putting it on before work one day sending my u-740 crashing down upon my tile floor. The battery cover flew across the floor and the remains of the holster was scattered about the kitchen to my horror. Apparently the small plastic area where the center hinge pin slides through failed - causing the 2 tiny rounded plastic areas on each side just under the hinge pin to fail just as I opened the clip to put it on. Verizon was fine with giving me a new one but now I'm somewhat leery of how sturdy it is (or isn't). I never had a failure with my old Moto v710 holster - I hope this one was just a fluke.

dont see why you would want to put a sticker on the nice colored phone.

How do I get the v-cast player to add songs. I loaded 450 songs onto the SD card but the player only sees 76 songs. Any help is appreciated.

Posted by: pgens

Check prior posts in thread for one cause... if your filenames are too long they won't show. You'll have to look around in the thread for the limit as I don't recall it. But look at the 76 that are fine and get a feel for their filename length, then try shortening some that aren't showing up to see if they magically then appear.

grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr dont take this the wrong way, im not blowing up at you, it just gets me frustrated that I took all the time to create the Official u740 Guide and FAQ (where it states that file names CANNOT be longer than 36 characters and tells you what to do to get songs on your card correctly) and no one reads it. If this doesnt fix the problem, by all means post. Like I said, not taking it out on you, just frustrated..........I need a beer.

I did! I did!

Seriously, your guide was great. I read it, even though I had already read everything, in fragmented form, in the original threads. It's a must read for all u740 owners.
