The Official Samsung SCH-U740 "Alias" Thread

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Hopefully this isn't redundant, as I looked through the thread and didn't see it anywhere.

Is there a shortcut to activating the lock code rather than going all the way through the menus to lock it?

Posted by: socojava

For anyone not looking to pay full retail, I just got mine on E-bay and there are a few more on there ending soon within the next few hours.

What exactly are you wanting to lock out? There is a hold button on the side of the phone that locks out the music features on the front panel.

Posted by: zazzified

The actual phone. Like so you have to use the lock code to access it. The only way I know is to go all the way to the security menu, blah blah blah.

The eBay vinyl skins work perfect. I didn't bother putting the inside skins on (around the keys and big screen) because I only want it to protect the outside from scratches, but the outside ones work perfect.

cool. I will pick up a set. thanks for the input.

does anyone know when skinit.com will get u740 up cause i wanna get a custom skin

any new leaks on the WAP settings?

Posted by: zazzified

Was it ever determined whether there's a way to make the external screen show some type of picture when the phone is open? It looks broken with its boring blue screen!

Posted by: xanatos1

I read somewhere - either here or the user manual on how to set the phone to read text messages on the front screen, but I have forgotten and cannot find it on the phone, or where on earth I read it. Anyone know how to setup text message to show up on the front screen? TIA

I'm sorry, but WHY are you posting here?

Posted by: xanatos1

I have a new question... my old phone had an option called, "car setting". This would allow for auto answer when my headset was in the phone, and then when it wasn't connected - the phone would automatically revert back to answer when flipped. As far as I can tell the 740 will only auto answer, or flip answer... can it do both at the same time?

Because I had the phone but sold it shortly thereafter, and the phone has a champagne finish that only a Persian would think was cool.

Been watching 300, have you?

I got this phone last Friday, and I'm happy with it. I'm paranoid about protection, though, so I'm looking into cases/jackets. Unfortunately, as mentioned in this (very long thread), the only custom-fit case doesn't look very classy. How come Samsung doesn't make a case for this? I'd pay $$ to have a leather case that stays on, and can accommodate both flips without annoying buttons to remove. I"m looking into the vinyl skins from ebay.

I'm a little apprehensive about the battery life, too. Less than 30 minutes of talk time, 15 minutes of fooling around with the camera, and I was down to 3 bars today (after a full charge last night).

Posted by: sant1ago

Mmm... there could be something wrong with your battery, I get a much better life out of mine. I've had a 1 hour and half call, (with bluetooth headset) and I was down only two bars.

Posted by: zazzified

Wow, battery life problems? Mine lasts around four days of talking, texting, camera playing before it drops to three bars.

Posted by: labelexec

my samsung u620 doesn't add new words to its dictionary which is annoying. doe sthe u740 do it?

Posted by: anthonyatddn

dont think so either, but when you have a full qwerty keyboard, id think the majority of texting is done in that orientation so adding words to the dicitonary would be pointless. unless you are texting while driving, which in that case you shouldn't be doing either.

theres my public service announcement for the morning.

Posted by: ElementFire

sant1ago and zazz: Hrm, does the battery stabilize over time? Should I do let it drain fully before a charge to maximize battery life?

Posted by: nitepeople

well looks like the color is no longer an issue

now if we could just get games into it.....ya ya brew/digital sig. I wish i would have believed that w/ my xbox or psp. Its the principal of it I will NOT be told what technologies I am allowed to have.

Posted by: anthonyatddn

too bad now at a glance that looks like the 990 and damn close to the lg 8600

but hey to each his own

Posted by: coachphil

I've seen some complain about it taking a long time to load web pages on the Samsung u740. A freind has the either the envy or it's predecessor 8600? and I thought it was faster than most pda's. Am I right ?

yeah... but can you say that about the gold champaign one???? NOPE.. the phone is in a class of its own..... the closest comparison you can make is the D&G gold razr... but i wouldnt take that as a bad thing

Posted by: anthonyatddn

me neither, granted its a razr, but at first impression, the color pops and is just plain classy. i have no problem with the color of my 740, i was however making the argument that the black 740's look like the 990 and 8600. that is ofcourse until you open it up. then its just in a catagory all its own.

the black 740; we can call it stealthy, but the gold one, flashy. its all in your point of view.

Posted by: Angela627

Count me in as one of those that actually likes the Champagne I dont find it annoying bright or flashy, like the gold razr for example. The Black, to me, looks like any other phone.

no. its a sammy thing. they used to (at least on my sprint sammy's), but no longer.

Posted by: zazzified

I myself was torn on the gold shade, but I've gotten used to it and I don't really care either way. I'm a girl, though. lol.

Posted by: ElementFire

Hmm, maybe I have a defective battery. I had 3 x 15 minute calls today, and 4 x 10 minute calls, with one of them on speaker phone, and I'm down to 2 bars.

First thing tomorrow, I'm going to reset my call timers before unplugging the charger, so I'll know exactly how many minutes I've talked and the corresponding battery use.

Posted by: nitepeople

ok bitpim does work for me syncing my u740 and my powerbook via bluetooth. Use the sch a950 as phone (it was default for me) and open detect settings use comm port "serial (........phonebook sync-1)" i am able to get all my #'S, recent calls, calender ect,
and i can see the file structure

Just finished reading the sticky guide and all the pages here. Good info folks!

I have one question I have not seen addressed. I have never used the Verizon UI before (had a pda phone previously). I have two of these phones shipping soon. Is there a character limit to the notepad function?

Thanks!

I kind of doubt it, but is there any get it now app that allows you to have a bigger notepad? I didn't see anything. With all this memory it seems it would be an easy thing to do and ole' Verizon could make their usual cash off of it.

Hi All,

a quick question. I can't seem to find any information in the manual, in the phone, or on here about voice announcing. Does it have the ability to announce whos calling if the call is from someone on your contact list ??? I really wanted this feature so its hopefully something I am just missing...

look in Tools --> Voice Commands

Posted by: Lordshadowz

Nothing in there at all. Heck I even found the option where it will read me all the menus.. but no call announcing. It will display whose calling on the screen but not announce it.. I looked in sounds as well.. I remember on the vx9800 I had to set it in sounds for it to work.

This just stinks...

Posted by: anthonyatddn

what your suggesting would mean the phone has to say the name as well as play the ringtone?!?! they dont do that cuz that doesnt make any sense.

Posted by: ElementFire

Okay, here are my numbers for battery life today (from a fresh, all-night charge):

One picture taken. Camera app was open for 15 seconds.
Two calls were on speakerphone for a total of ~12 minutes.

Talk time of ~18 minutes: 3 bars of battery
Talk time of ~32 minutes: 2 bars
Talk time of ~1 hr 5 minutes: 1 bar
Talk time of ~1 hr 55 minutes: 0 bars, warning flashes begin
Talk time of ~2 hr 10 minutes: Forced shutdown

What is with the inconsistency here? I read a few pages ago in this thread that the last two bars last a while.

Here are some scientific-looking graphs that show this.

And a graph!

I think I'll have to go down to the Verizon store and see what they can do. Should I just exchange my battery, or should I exchange the phone?

It does make sense and thats exactly what a lot of other phones do. I keep my phone in my pocket.. With other phones, such as the LG vx9800, it will say "Pat is calling" and then play a ringtone. I can also set it so that it doesnt play a ringtone but will repeat who is calling. Its good for when you want to screen your calls and not have the phone out...

I still have not been able to find the feature.. So I'm guessing its something to be added to the list of hopeful improvements with firmware additions... That and AD2p profile... I really hope they add that...

element, they do look good and ligit, now only if the techs believe em, then you'll have them in the palm of your hand

They do do that. Just not on the u740 i guess (could of sworn it does, but looked into my roommates u740 last night and lordshadowz is right, its not there). My samsung u620 has call annouce...."Call From..Rob..Mobile" then plays the ringtone. So yes, it is an option for SOME phones.

Posted by: anthonyatddn

from what ive read here or other places, its taken multiple install, uninstalls, like 2 or 3 times to get it right. personally i have not done it, so i can't add any personal input. but id say be prepared to hear that sort of thing.

Posted by: SweetVixen

i was wondering if there was a way someone could post the default tone for when you get text messages on the u740. my fiance has it and i would like it for my enV but he cant figure out where it is on the phone. thanks!

Posted by: anthonyatddn

different manufacturers of phones means typically different factory installed ringers.

Posted by: SweetVixen

i know that. i wanted to know if any of you know how to extract it so i can load it onto my phone

Posted by: u740nut

thanks anth, at least your not mean like some other posters, appreciate the input.

Posted by: anthonyatddn

no problem 740nut. post back in here if/when u get it up and running and any tips that might be helpful.

have a good one.

as far as extracting files from one phone and send it to another, sorry sweet, but im not that well versed in that kind of hacking lol. on the surface it sounds easy, but even i know it wouldnt be. you'd think they'd make it possible to work. sorry, but i think its a lost cause unless someone else can point you in a better direction.

I was having the same problem for 3 days but now my phone seems to be fine. I called verizon and they said I have to bring the phone in and they will test to see if it is the battery or the phone causing the problem and it will take 2 hours. But the battery is under warranty for 1 year so if it is the battery they will replace it.

Thanks for the info, this seems to be the case with me, too.

This is really weird. Yesterday was day four for me, and I had about 40 minutes of talk time (with about 10 on speakerphone), several minutes of video recording, music playback for half an hour, and I was down to 3 bars (which is an amazing improvement over the day before). It seems like the battery is "stabilizing". I think I'll put the phone through it's paces again today, before deciding tomorrow. Again, thanks for the info. We're the only two people who had any problems with the battery, it seems.

I'm a girl too -- and thought I liked the gold just fine, but when I saw the black in person, I have to admit I liked it better. The clincher was when I found out that if I traded my gold in for a black I'd get $50 back, because I got my gold one before they dropped the price. Couldn't pass THAT up!

I'm afraid to try it... I'm already hooked on Scorpion (in the VZW Solitaire package) and using too many hours that I should be using to study! (Which probably makes me a dork too.)

Posted by: anthonyatddn

unfortunatly you have to pay for all of em. i still find it hard to believe that this phone didnt even have any demos of any games on it.

Posted by: zazzified

I was going to get some games, but I just switched to verizon so I have no idea how all of that stuff works. lol.

If you have VCast, it doesn't apply to you.

Pft, like I'm going to pay monthly for VCast on top of paying the ridiculous charges for the games. Verizon can bite me!

Thanks for your help though, lol.

If you pay for Vcast you can view unlimited videos, Mobile Web doesn't eat your minutes, and games that require airtime don't eat you minutes.

I can appreciate not wanting to spend more on cell phone bill, but for a lot of us the ten bucks for Vcast is a pretty good value.

Posted by: zazzified

I can understand that, and maybe I'll get it at some point, but for the moment it seems like it'd add up rather quickly.

Posted by: kissnic3

Ok, i will admit to skipping the past 12 pages cuz i'm extremely frustrated. I uploaded a lot of music vids to my phone, and they play, but the sound is horrible. I use Super to make it into the file i needed like it told me to do inThe Official Samsung SCH-U740 Guide and FAQ Thread, however, only one song sounds decent and i tryed it out on my headphones as well and it still sounds like ****. I used the standard 3gp. (nokia/nec/seimens) settings. (h.263 and AMR audio). Does anyone know any better settings for the audio?

Another thing i don't get is why my mp3's sound great when listening to them under my music but if i cut them and send them to my phone to use as a ringer some of them are all screwed up. I love this phone, but this whole sound deal is getting on my nerves. I spend a lot of time in the hospital and on my way to dr's appointments 2hrs away from where i live and my phone is the only thing that keeps me sain, i have the feeling this might be the one phone that drives me a bit loopy.

Once again, if someone put up a post about a better sound setting for SUPER, i'm sorry, i missed it or overlooked it. I know how much ya'll hate being asked the same thing over and over.

how are you sending the ringer to your phone? email or bitpim? if you email them to your phone it converts them to a different file type, and degrades the quality, use bitpim for the best results.

Posted by: kissnic3

Thanks Teksu!

I'm doing it via e-mail, i need to get a bluetooth adapter for my pc... which i will do tomorrow. Thanks for pointing that out to me. I knew someone came up with a way to do it via bitpim, but hadn't realized it helped with the quality of the tone

Is the little cover that protects the charger/headphone/USB port on the left side of the U740 supposed to come off completely, open up, or swivel up?

email worked great on mine and my rommate's 740. just need to really pay attention to the sample rates, and bit rates. The higher you go, the phone tends to screw it up or not play it at all. If you create the mp3 ringer in bit pim use a sample rate of 32000 and bitrate of 64k. Try that (if you havnt already) on the ringers that sound bad to see if that helps. also try to keep em under 30 secs.

I'm not sure I completely agree with this statement...

When I've done it (with my Moto's, LG's or U740) via email.. the quality doesn't change... in fact, if I email an MP3 to the phone, save it, then use BitPim to copy it back to the PC... and do a binary file compare between that and the original, they are exactly the same.

Now, I use 48kbit/44hkz/Mono CBR Mp3's which are 30 seconds or less... and/or General Midi files...

Maybe if you get the BitRate too high on the Mp3's, then Verizon's network does something to them along the way?

Now if i use that for my video's audio output will that help the sound on there as well, because if my ring tones sound just as messed up as my music video's shouldn't those settings help too?

Posted by: nick12684

Ok i browsed through 30 pgs of this thread. got frustrated and figured i'd just ask and hope id get some good news. first im curious on how to hack/unlock the phone so i can get free verizon mobile web. i know i still have to use minutes but the monthly charge plus using minutes isn't worth it. so a guide to get free mobile web 2.0 would be great. also is there any other hacks, cheats or tricks. that i could use to improve my phone and/or get cool stuff (games wallpaper, ringtones etc) ive had verizon for years now. this by far is the coolest phone ive had/used for the price. thanks hope somebody can help.

Posted by: kissnic3

I've messed around with so many different settings today i'm starting to see numbers and odd stuff that doesn't even make sense to me... i'm not a phone guru like some of you. However i did realize that there must be a perfect setting for ring tones and for video's because when i listen to my mp3's they are crisp and clear. So, i know that they aren't junk speakers and i am going to keep my U740!

The codes to access the phone's menus, and DLL for Samsung's UPST software hasn't been found/leaked yet. So until then, no way to do this yet.

yes the phone calls will be mono everything else will be stereo

So far both black u740's that I tried had echo on speakerphone. Why wouldn't they have worked this out?

What is the likelyhood I got two bum phones?

Posted by: FlipNite

Thanks Element Fire... I got a little nervous.

Anyone know if there's a way to access G-Mail through Mobile Web on the U740 other than the web browser? It would not let me download the app version, but I remembering seeing somewhere that Samsungs were already configured for G-mail. When will Verizon add support?

Posted by: dmvee

I'm not sure if this has been asked.

Can anyone compare the reception strength compared to the LG phones? (ie... 8600 and 8700)

Posted by: mick4394

Samsungs are usually third in line, as far as reception is concerned. The u740 isn't exactly a performer in this category.

You could go through ten more of these phones and still have this problem. This is a flaw of the phone's design. You don't have a bum phone.

Anyone know if there is a way to fit more text per page in web browsing mode?
Is there a way to reduce the font size?

Specifically, I use Yahoo Mobile Web to read my email.
On my old LG phone, I could see much more of my email messages per page than I can on this phone. I have to hit "more" way too soon on this one.

Thanks!

I like the "flame" animated wallpaper on the u740.
Anyone know where to get more free animated wallpapers that can be sent to this phone?

just a few silly questions, after spending hours looking through this thread:
1. I read that you can't take self portraits when the phone is closed. Is this absolutely confirmed? What's the possibility of it getting fixed in a SW/FW upgrade?
2. Can the camera's flash be used as a flashlight? With my a990 I could hold down the camera button, and the flash would stay on for a while - it was really useful.

I'm excited to get this on friday

When I have my bluetooth headset on, the phone automatically answers the call, and if I am on another call at the time it answers the new call and hangs up on the person I was talking to, is this normal? I don't remember this happening with my lg 9900. My phone is set to answer on flip, not automatic. Anyone know how to fix this if it can be fixed? Thanks

hi i have a bunch of java games on my pc that my friend sent me. they are mobile games they are .jar files. i was wondering if anyone knew how to put them on my phone? i called verizon earlier to ask if i could play java games on my phone and they said you should be able to... soo i could use some help please

Posted by: coachphil

My understanding is that Verizon has stripped the phone (actually all their phones except BB's) of java ability. This is so they can "sell" brew applications.

Hack to put it back ?

Posted by: coachphil

If reception is the main concern, he's right, they're not great performers. I just returned 2 of them. One had much better reception than the other. Testing sitting next to each other, bars were always higher on one. You could try exchanging for another and see if it helps.

My overall impression after a few days of use is that the 740 is a much better messaging device than a phone. Calls muffled on either or both sides often. Volume gone wild in either direction. Loved the idea but not the implementation.

You can't put back what was never there.

Get used to BREW. If you're using Verizon, you're stuck with it.

1. Confirmed, I just tried it. However, the image is shown on both LCDs (inner and outer) when the camera app is active. So, self-portraits are possible, but only with the phone flipped open.
2. Yes, in camcorder mode, with recording time set to unlimited and flash set to ON, you can have a flashlight. I've tried it, it's like a super-bright LED mini-flashlight.

So, when they "stripped" the functionality off the phone, they didn't just "deactivate" it? Silly question, I know.

Real quick. I love my u740, but I was thinking. It'd be so much easier if there was a way for people with the micro sd cards to be able to put their photos in folders that you can easily browse through on the phone. I have over 200 pictures on my phone, and its a pain in the butt . Is that even a possible idea? I don't know much about what you can do with phones. But, that seems like it'd just be so much easier insted of having to go through 150 pictures before you get to the one you want, you can just go to say.... family to find a picture of your mother or something.

yeah so, do you think that could even be done?

you know, i dont think ive ever thought about that. ur right that would be a pretty slick idea. and considering how simple that is, surprised it hasnt been implemented for verizon.

I wonder why they haven't thought of it. It'd really make everything SO much easier!! I'd love to have folders like family, friends, misc, and pic ids. It just takes FOREVER to find a picture when I want to show it to someone.

I wish they'd make it so you don't have to use slide show to view the full screen photo too.

Like i said, I really don't know anything about phones, but someone mentioned that maybe they'd do something about that in a firmware update. Umm... prepare to laugh at me, how exactly would one go about updating that on their phone? :: commence the laughing at me. haha ::

Posted by: rviccaro

i totally agree. I mean, with 2GB microSD cards, there is a good possibility that you will have quite a few pictures on there. Verizon should definitley take note of the fact that they need to build better photo viewing software into their phones.

Is there a BREW photo viewer type app?

anything that would make viewing/finding photos easier would be GREAT.

I mean, i gave my boyfriend my vx8300 and took my card, and even still, on his phone, without a card, hes got about 80 pictures, and its so annoying to find anything.. He said he can't imagine what its like for me with over 200.

what? you said I could? LOL just kidding.

updating the firmware? VZW store.

I am going to return this phone. although i like this phone very much all of the features and design cannot make up for the fact that othe rpeople have difficulty in hearing me. I'm not sure if my phone is faulty or what, however this is unacceptable. I might try replacing it to see if is just my phone. Also I noticed that my signal strength is significantly lower.

If my cellphone cannot function as a phone first, all the bells and whistles don't really matter.

It's not your phone. These problems, with the u740, are all over these boards. Believe me, I know how hard it is. When I got the u740, I loved it, and tried to ignore its flaws. It's an easy phone to like, and there are a lot of good things about it. It doesn't have a lot of flaws, but the ones it has are huge, for a cell phone.

Stop torturing yourself. Trade the phone in for a different model. It's the only way to solve your problem.

Well, FWIW, I'm very unhappy with the speakerphone on my u740. And only my speakerphone. People can't hear me if I'm more than a foot away from it, and I have to yell. Plus, there's that echo...

all I've been hearin is bad things about this phone...i get it tomorrow through the mail and hopefully I won't regret it! :S

you wont not to worry. the speaker phone echo issue is minimal. its all your point of view, my two cents... its a good phone, not to worry.

Hey everyone. I just got this phone today and I love it so far. I am coming from a V3C and before that a PPC6700. Although it seems like a great phone so far I cant find out if I can sync my contacts without paying for wireless sync. I have the mobile essentials pack with he data cable. Does any software support this phone yet?

Posted by: nitepeople

I've had mine for a week or 2 now and I like it. its like an entry level smart phone but half the price and size.
I would love to see a case u can keep on while using, not a little purse/holster. "Oh it can't be done because of the dual hinge" they say. Sure it can it would just be 2 completely seperate pieces. and leave the hinge exposed as long as it covers both screens (kinda fit like a sock on a foot) and the bottom cover can fit like a razar cover. looks like it would be real simple to do.

Posted by: CCBalla10

man reading all these pages about this phone has me excited. Now i can't wait til i get the phone tomorrow.

Posted by: Dulla

hows the aim on it

Posted by: jaewon223

Don't get me wrong this phone is great in many ways. However, there are some issues like with EVERY phone but they still do need to be addressed.

Major complaints

-people have difficulty in hearing me. i am told that it is not just my phone. this phone is kind of long in portrait mode so the mic is much farther away from my mouth so this may contribute to the poor mic quality. this is only speculation though.
-reception is worse than my 2-3 year older phone. i would expect a NEW phone to have better reception (and mic) but it definitely underperforms. that is not to say it's not usable but if you have poor reception in your area already this may be an issue. i think for most people they get good enough service so ymmv.

Minor issues
-when in landscape mode, pressing left on the directional keypad can be a bit difficult because there is little room
-same thing with the letter "P", the phone casing is raised there so pressing "P" is difficult for me
-i'm not sure if there is an option to toggle this, none that i've seen, but when i want the front display to light up, holding the button down is not very practical. it would be far better to just be able to press it once to have it light up.
-there were some other ones but i felt that they were too minor for me to even mention

I think if you can get away with the reception and the voice quality going out this is an exceptional phone. having the option for portrait and landscape mode is probably the best form factor i seen. the keys are a bit small but i notice you get used if you do enough texting. this phone is definitely a media phone and is great for vcast/txt messaging/listening to music/etc.

I'm going to return this phone unfortunately and get the LGx8700.

I dont think you will. I really liked mine when I got it. Only reason I traded it in is because I originally wanted the u620 and didnt think my area was going to get it. When it did, I was all over it like a fat kid and pancakes (no offense to any pancake loving fat kids out there )

I will say this, and most people Ive told this to agreed after the initial trial. For the first 3 days, you'll start to get annoyed or hate the keyboard. Just realize it takes a little time getting used to and soon becomes rather easy. The speakerphone issue, well its been hit or miss. Mine seemed to crackle at high volumes so I turned it down. People could hear me as long as I wasnt too far away from the phone. If speakerphone is a main concern, that should be the first thing you try out with several phone calls to see if it meets your needs (everybody's take on it is going to be different, you need to try it out for yourself and decide......one man's trash is another man's treasure). Just keep in mind, most of us HoFo-ers are REALLY picky and demanding at times of what we expect out of our phones (c'mon guys, b4 you start going off on me, you know thats true). Think about what YOU think is most important in a phone. Try out those features/aspects. If everything that you want works the way you want, I wouldnt worry about the other small stuff. Just my 2 cents.

Anyone if the U740 works with a BMW bluetooth system. Thinking of the u740 (black) or the Moto Maxx. But I think the Maxx will have a better chance since there are a lot of other moto types that work including my Q.

Anyone know?

ive heard poopy things on the Q, what's your take?

and no i dont know if the 740 will work with the beamer, i have a honda lol

You've probably seen this case already. I'm using it, and it's not too bad. I thought that taking the button off everytime I wanted to go landscape would be annoying, but you get used to it fast. The only downside is that the neoprene doesn't look as classy as a leather case would.

My wife loves her Q. The only downside I see is the lame web browser, for a smartphone.

Poopy things sure, but the form factor for a smartphone is amazing. Form factor was the only reason I dumped my blackberry 7130e.

all blackberry's to me seem just honkin thick. th Q9h looks more finished to me. however, the 740 is fly, so imma keep her.

The easiest way to get your contacts from your old phone to your new phone is with Backup Assistant through GIN. If you're a My Account user it's free.

If I were you, I'd go to My Account, reactivate your old phone, download Backup Assistant and backup your contacts, reactivate your new phone, download Backup Assistant and load your contacts.

It works great. It will tell you that there's a 1.99 subscription fee, but if you use My Account, it does not apply.

I hope all of that made some kind of sense.

Posted by: themopedwhiz

the fastest and easiest way is using BA from vzw... but you can use bitpim and your PC, hookup your old phone export your contacts as CSV file

then hook up the new phone u740 and import your contacts CSV file

bitpim is a free download, but i'm guesiing you don't have it and never use it on your old phone , so it might take a little bit of reading and fussing before you learn to use it

one piece of advice, do NOT send/write anything to the phone until you do aome reading about bitpim and you BACK up the phones ROOT directory before you do anything to your phone

having a root directory backup can be a life saver.

bitpim is great program, but it is NOT failsafe, it is NOT idiot proof, do something wrong and you can brick a phone

read go slow, don't get in a rush, see the u740 sticky at the top of this forum

My InvisibleShield just showed up. I'm scared!! And I have no idea what goes where.

Posted by: dincp

My roommate and I both got this phone. Yesterday she had to return hers (twice!) because she tried to use Blogger To Go (http://www.blogger.com/tour-pst.g)

It sends a verification code to your phone, but once it arrived, she could no longer access her inbox. The phone would reboot every time she tried. The verizon people couldn't explain it and gave her replacements. The first time they thought it was a problem with the individual phone, but after two in a row?

Has anybody used the service and gotten it to work with this phone?
Any idea what the problem could be with the inbox? Even without actually going in to the inbox, it wouldn't let her delete it. Using "delete all" got rid of them all but that one.

TIA for any help. First post and all, but this forum has been great for a n00b like, so thanks.

Posted by: zazzified

I'd try and tell you, but I certainly don't want to have to return my phone, lol.

Posted by: dincp

Haha...Well, it was a warning as well as a question.

In the trash... it's just extras from the die cut.

Posted by: zazzified

Oh, really? I thought maybe the skinny ones were for the sides on the bottom half of the phone.

Posted by: Angela627

Can you take pictures after you're done shielding your phone?

Posted by: zazzified

Yep, I'll do that ASAP. I might not be able to post photos until tomorrow though, since I'll be borrowing a camera.

Posted by: anthonyatddn

well which ever, im sure ppl would be interested in seeing what they look like.

Posted by: zazzified

It's really very unoffensive. The hardest piece to get right was the body one on the front, so I'd recommend doing that last. Easiest was the inside screen cover.

Posted by: anthonyatddn

get any air bubbles in it? is it like window tint, meaning once it sets in place for a lil bit, its there for good?

Posted by: taar44

I must say i am impressed by this phone. I was at dinner yesterday with a friend and he had one. It looked really nice. From the pics, i used to think it was a cheap plastic toy with a "gimmicky" flip and twist screen. I guess i should have gone to the Verizon store to play with one before ordering my Maxx VE online!

Posted by: anthonyatddn

still will have the 15 day deal incase the maxx doesnt turn out like you'd like. but from what ive read the maxx looks like a slick phone. the glass front will make it sharp im sure. my gf has the fire, and its classy lookin. fingerprints are easy to clean off so no worries there.

There's no charge for reactivating a phone? I'm afraid that they'll levy $35 x 2 (for two phones) if I follow that method. Otherwise, that seems like a great idea. Bitpim messed up my contacts when I transferred them (the first three digits of every number are gone).

If you try it online and it works, it is free. If it doesn't work online, call CS and they will try to charge you $20. Tell them it wouldn't work online and maybe they'll waive it, YMMV.

fyi this isn't a new activation, it's an equipment change.

Posted by: anthonyatddn

and then wont that reset his new every 2?

Posted by: pgens

No, an online equipment change doesn't affect contract date or NE2. Online subsidized equipment upgrades affect NE2 eligibility.

There were a couple tiny ones after I applied it yesterday, but it looks like they're gone today. And it won't come off on its own or anything, but you can remove it if you need/want to.

Posted by: anthonyatddn

sounds good zazz. mabe this is soemthing to look into getting. it cant hurt, and they're relativley inexpensive as well.

Posted by: zazzified

Yeah, it was 24.95 for the full body shield, and I used the free shipping option and it took exactly a week (that counts the weekend--ordered Wednesday, received following Wednesday). It has a lifetime guarantee and they'll replace it if you remove it to send it to the manufacturer, so it seems like quite a deal.

Posted by: anthonyatddn

id have to agree with ya there.

Posted by: dincp

I think I'm gonna get the invisible shield too. I have it on my ipod and it works wonders. I can keep my ipod (without any other case) and my keys in my same pocket with no worries. Their customer service is tops as well.

Posted by: kelleysheridan

I just got the black one! It's so exciting. It took me a while to figure out how to put ringtones on it using my microSD card... I tried emailing them to myself, but the quality was horrible, and I could barely hear them.

1. I used Audacity for this. Cut a 20-30ish section of a song, then go to edit - preferences - file formats - and change the bit rate to 80, so that the song is under 300k when it's saved. Save the selection as an mp3 (you'll need to download a .dll file off the website)
2. Rename the file from .mp3 to .mid and stick it on the microSD card (in the my_sounds folder), and put the card in the phone
3. move the song from the card to the phone's memory
4. go to GIN, music and tones, my sounds, select the ringtone, go to options, then send, and then send it to yourself. When you get the message, just select to set it, or save it, as a ringtone
5. voila! a ringtone that isn't all crackly and quiet!

I hope this helps someone!

Posted by: themopedwhiz

just use the bitpim file option and 'new file' to write the mid tones to the ringtone folder on the phone. then cycle the phone OFF-ON and you are ready to go, NO sending
no saving/setting

I am thinking of getting this phone on Monday. I have had a Maxx VE for 1 day now and i do not like it. I am new to the Samsung world so maybe someone can answer these questions for me instead of me reading through 39 pages of this thread:

1. Can the ring mode be set using the external buttons without having to actually flip the phone open?

2. With my previous Motorolas, a variety of programs can be used to edit seems and enable things that Verizon turned off by default. Is this the same for the U-740?

3. One thing i hate about the Maxx VE is that the hinge in the middle jabs into my cheekbones when using the phone. Is the hinge on the Sammy a little more recessed?

4. Motorolas have always provided excellent reception for me. How is the reception on the Sammy?

5. Does the Sammy have a bug free OS? Are there any major things that you guys are waiting for an OS update to fix?

6. Things like transferring ring tones and pics to the phone were easy with the Motorolas after a few hacks. Is the Sammys the same way?

Thanks all.

1. don't remember

2. Nope.

3. The hinge on the u740 is about as big as it gets.

4. Terrible. The reception is the worst thing about this phone. It's the reason I don't own it anymore.

5. For the most part, the OS is very nice and bug free. It's a major plus of the phone. No major problems.

6. Don't know, never tried.

fyi this isn't a new activation, it's an equipment change.

If it doesn't work online, does this render my phone unusable? Which one of these "reasons for change" has the highest chance of being free?

Sorry for all these questions, but this operation seems to be very high risk. The last thing I need is additional charges onto my bill.

  • Replacement device
  • Phone was stolen
  • Received phone from other source
  • Other
  • Original ESN/MEID was incorrect

No, it doesn't render your phone unusable. It probably just means there's something on your account that's not allowing you to make the change.

I usually select "other", but I don't think it really matters. They're all free. The $20.00 charge through customer service is more for taking up their time than anything.

how bout them full body shield pics??

Posted by: zazzified

I'm still working on the pictures. I still have to borrow my boyfriend's camera and I haven't been able to yet. I'm hoping to get them posted this weekend.

1. Can the ring mode be set using the external buttons without having to actually flip the phone open?

Not as far as I am aware. But all you have to do is open and hold down # to switch to vibrate.

2. With my previous Motorolas, a variety of programs can be used to edit seems and enable things that Verizon turned off by default. Is this the same for the U-740?

No. But Verizon is sort of evil for personalization anyway.

3. One thing i hate about the Maxx VE is that the hinge in the middle jabs into my cheekbones when using the phone. Is the hinge on the Sammy a little more recessed?

It's pretty big, but you would really have to hold your phone against your face HARD to get it to dig into your cheekbones...unless your cheekbones are freakishly pointy.

4. Motorolas have always provided excellent reception for me. How is the reception on the Sammy?

I struggled with the switch from Motorola to Samsung myself, but so far the reception is excellent, even in my room and at my grandparents', where a lot of people get no signal at all.

5. Does the Sammy have a bug free OS? Are there any major things that you guys are waiting for an OS update to fix?

It's pretty smooth going for now. V doesn't work in quick text mode (the mode where you enter in phrases that you can then insert in texts). That's about all I've noticed/heard of.

6. Things like transferring ring tones and pics to the phone were easy with the Motorolas after a few hacks. Is the Sammys the same way?

I don't know. Someone on here recommended phonezoo.com so that's what I've been using. It's free and it just takes a pix message so that's cool with me.

Posted by: taar44

Zazzi and Mick, thanks. I actually played with one at a Verizon store today. The hinge did not affect my cheekbones so baring any unforseen events, i should pick one up next week.

there are no special hacks or tricks you have to do or any special websites. Just email the pictures and ringers to your phone. XXXXXXXXXX@vzwpix.com

U740 DLL for SamsungPSTLite is released -> http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=1153037

I found the 10 digit code burried within the firmware of the phone. I used a hex editor.

I would recommend doing everything in regular phone mode, not widescreen mode.

Menu/settings and tools/# key/6 0s/press 0 again/0218243440
This reveals the hidden menu
SYSINFO Editor (can be entered)
USERPREFS Editor (can be entered)
Build Version
MP3
EVDO test editor.

Update...
I have had no luck in using the PST to do anything except read phone info. Everything I try gives me a read error.
However, I was able to enable the hidden menu without a computer using the code mention above...
Click on USERPREFS editor, and it should bring you up to a screen that says HIDDEN menus 0. Change the 0 to a 1. Now when you go to the get it now menu, press 0 and you should now be able to acess the hidden menu after entering your last 4 digits as the passcode.

Good news... I can access the hidden menu even though the PST isn't working for me.
Bad news... There are no WAP settings in the get it now settings. There are WAP settings in the USERPREFS menu, so I will play around with that and get it working.

Posted by: Mark_Venture

What's the MSL code? is it 740667?

Trying it with PstLite and the DLL, and I get stuck... getting "error in requesting MSL Code"

Nice.. I see that.

Too bad I have the MobileTV feature on my account (using the U620 at the moment)... I can't switch back to the u740 easily to test... I can't use the web page to switch phones...

Under GIN, press # instead of 0 and the last 4 digits as passcode and see if you can access WAP. This is how it's done with a990.

I assume that there is no problem with MMS but if you haven't, to get there click on MESSAGE (left ... softkey) -> SETTINGS -> 3. PIX-FLIX Msg -> *. I hope this works for this phone too.

It would be nice to have the firmware for the a990 as well.

Thanks!
I actually just figured that out this morning.
Pressing 0 in the GIN menu gets you to brew settings, and pressing # brings you to Wap settings.

I couldn't actually get wap working... which settings would I have to change to make wap.google.com my WAP site... using port 80.

Also, thank you for the PIX messaging menu, I was wonder how to get to that too.
________
Is anyone actually having any luck using the u740 pst? Whenever I try to get any information from the phone under the settings tab in the PST, I get an error message saying couldn't read from phone.

First off, awesome find guys. We're very close and i'm sure that some people have already got this. There are a few menus that we would have to change around, one being the primary dns and one the primary ip. I know with the ip we could find it on a free proxy server site, but i'm not sure about the dns. Then once those two are set up all you would have to do is go down to the common settings and change the homepage to whatever it is you would like. However the specifics of the dns server and ip address i do not know. Has anyone found something that worked for them?

Under Primary DNS menu set the following....

HTTP Proxy port = 80
Prmary DNS = wap.google.com

You might also have to set E2E Port, LXL Port to 0 or clear it out. But try them as they are set first...

Is there anything telling how to find this code? I'm insterested on how to find it for my U620....

Posted by: Mark_Venture

taar44,

Your profile shows V710 and V3M... so I'll respond with those phones in mind..

1. The V710 uses the Moto UI, the V3M can be seem edited to have the ring styles like the Moto UI (loud, quiet, vibrate then ring, etc..) and they can even be changed with the flip closed.

On the U740, and the V3M with the standard Verizon UI, there are no ring styles like that, and you can't change the settings that are there using the external buttons.

2. Its quite different to mod the Samsungs. Different software, different approaches... Even then the newer moto's have less ability to manipulate the underlying Moto features because of Verizon's UI/Brew...

3. Compared to the V710 and V3C, I don't have any problems with the U740's hinge against my face...

4. The U740 drops calls, doesn't ring, etc.. where as my Moto's don't. Even though the Sammy was a free phone sent to me for being a Verizon Wireless Customer Council member, I stopped using it because of its poor RF performance compaired to my V710, E815, V3C and enV... At least the u740 is better than my Chocolate.

5. I didn't notice any bugs with the u740... then again, I only used it for a few weeks...

6. BitPim doesn't natively support the u740, however, you can use the File system access to put ring tones and pictures on the phone... And configured as a different samsung to work with contacts. You can also email them to your phone if you wanted to.

Well what I did was, I downloaded the firmware that corys00 provided us. Then I put it into a hex editor. From there I searched for a string consisting of 10 question marks... ??????????. I then looked around the hex code for a ten digit number. I didn't see any, so I clicked find again, and the next set of question marks had the 0218243440 number by it.
Hope this helps. I still have had no luck with the PST, but the firmware was all I needed.

Mark, if you have a copy of the u620 firmware, I would glady find the 10 digit code for you.

P.S. dacool25, very nice post! Will come in handy!

So tman, have you got WAP working?

I have been playing around with my phone all morning and i am not sure which settings to change. I am familiar with changing the ip addresses since i used to have a e815 and that was all we had to change. But with the dns, i'm not sure what to change.

Bottom line, has anyone got Wap totally working? and if so, did you change it through the USERPREFS editor or through the wap settings page under GIN?

I finally got it working this morning. I originally tried changing everything through the USERPREFS editor, before I found out about the wap settings menu under GIN.
After playing around for alittle bit, I got the WAP working by chaning stuff around in the WAP menu under gin. Here are my settings....

These are the settings I changed to get it working.

PRIMARY DNS
HTTP PROXY PORT- 80
E2E PORT - 80
LXL PORT - 80
PRIMARY DNS - wap.google.com
PRIMARY IP
HTTP PROXY PORT - 80
E2E PORT - 80
LXL PORT - 80
PROXY ADRESS - 64.233.161.103

When playing back videos, you can make them full screen for easier viewing. However, I have yet to find a way to view photos full screen. Is this possible to do?

With the a990 the only way to view photos in full screen is to view it as SLIDESHOW. I'm assuming it is the same with this phone.
